Birth-related brain injuries can occur through two distinct mechanisms: hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy, which involves prolonged deprivation of blood flow and oxygen to the fetus during labor, and hemorrhagic brain bleeds, which result from shearing of blood vessels or skull trauma during delivery. Despite their different causes, both types can lead to severe neurological damage and permanent disabilities such as cerebral palsy or quadriplegia.

Believe it or not, when parents hire me to look into their child's birth injury case for brain injury, >> [snorts] >> it's kind of crazy and kind of upsetting and kind of scary, but a lot of times the doctors haven't even explained to them what actually happened to their child medically. So, my first job, before I even get into whether there's a case or not, is to find out what actually happened and explain that to parents. And a lot of times that's the most important thing on their mind at that time. And it got me thinking to the fact that there are two main types of brain injuries that are really different in the mechanism of injury, but similar in their outcome in that they produce profound neurologic devastation and can result in permanent lifelong disabilities such as cerebral palsy or quadriplegia.
The first type of brain injury is something called hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy. That basically means that there's a prolonged deprivation of blood flow or interruption of blood flow to the fetus during labor, which results in the brain losing oxygen over a period of time.
The second type of brain injury is something called a hemorrhagic bleed or essentially a brain bleed. So, it's not a lack of blood flow, but it's an actual bleed within the brain caused by a shearing of the veins or a shearing of the arteries or some type of trauma to the the skull during labor and delivery.
And even though these two different brain injuries um are caused and occur in much different ways, they often result in the same exact deficits, the same exact result, which is permanent lifelong disability for the child.
