I tested FSD in busy Antwerp city center 🇧🇪

[00:00:01]Right. Welcome to Antworp. Well, actually, we're currently in Mortal and I'm going to go for uh a little trip here in Antworp and see how it reacts in the most busy streets of the city and some tiny streets as well and see what's what. So, first we need to get from Mosul to Anto, but I know this section here. I used to train here on the left.

[00:00:30]And um yeah, it has to watch out for cyclists coming from the right. It's doing that. Oh, she's overtaking. Or he's doing that. It's not supposed to do that.

[00:00:43]But the car was paying attention to the cyclists, which is great.

[00:00:51]Now, here we also have a couple of speed bumps on this road.

[00:00:56]And coming onto the main road here is sometimes a challenge because of busy traffic. So that's why I've chosen to start here already.

[00:01:13]So we're off to a great start. It is slowing down for that cyclist that was coming. It is slowing down for the speed bumps, which is great for my front splitter.

[00:01:26]And here it's quite narrow in this turn, but FSD has no problem with it.

[00:01:43]Now, it's a Saturday afternoon, so it should be quite busy in the city.

[00:01:48]And I've mapped up I've mapped out, I should say, uh a few points here in the city. and we'll see how far we get. I got about an hour that I can spend on driving here before I need to get back home to go to our 10th anniversary party of uh the company that I work for, which is called Mobility Plus.

[00:02:13]They exist for 10 years this year. And uh yeah, it's a big party tonight.

[00:02:19]It's a car coming.

[00:02:24]It was beeping to see if it saw our car already. It starts moving so fast.

[00:02:32]Yeah. What is it going to do now?

[00:02:35]Yeah, the other car is waiting. Kind of had no choice.

[00:02:45]And here we need to go to the left and then we turn onto the right uh section.

[00:02:51]Just need to clean my camera here a little bit cuz seems like something is in front of it.

[00:03:06]Let's see. We got some cyclists here.

[00:03:08]What are they going to do? They're coming to the left.

[00:03:13]Car is nicely waiting for it.

[00:03:16]More cyclists from the left, but they are not. Oh, one is driving straight on.

[00:03:33]Now, there was a truck coming, but it left uh some room because somebody was crossing there as well.

[00:04:08]And in a bit this is going to widen up to a bigger road.

[00:04:16]But, uh, it's going to split off quite abruptly as well. And I want to see what it's doing there. Oh, it already noticed that pedestrian that wanted to cross. He was still nowhere near the side of the road.

[00:04:44]So yeah, here's where uh that uh second car is. It's abruptly splitting off.

[00:04:52]Enhanced autopilot was unable to handle this curve here.

[00:05:00]And FSD is not doing it that well either. It is doing it. But yeah, I I would have probably followed the lanes more and FSD just yeah, cut off the corner basically.

[00:05:18]Here's another interesting one. The sign for 30 km an hour.

[00:05:27]It is saying 30. It is slowing down.

[00:05:31]But now it also needs to move over.

[00:05:34]one lane to the left to continue on my route. And where will there be an end of the 30 km an hour?

[00:05:45]I just probably passed it because there was another sign that uh was not angled towards the road and somehow it realizes it can do 70 again.

[00:06:05]So here we need to go straight on. Oh, the car is going slightly around the back of that truck.

[00:06:19]Let's see how it handles this.

[00:06:44]Little bit of road works here, but not in the way of where we need to go.

[00:06:53]Well, actually, we have an intersection here with blinking orange lights. I've heard some complaints about people that it is thinking it is red. I need to go straight on.

[00:07:09]Can I go straight on? No, I'm not allowed to. And FSD sees it. So, it knows that we have to do a detour.

[00:07:34]See here we are already coming into I wouldn't say the busy section but section where we will encounter a lot of cyclists and pedestrians.

[00:07:50]That woman was not looking at what I was doing.

[00:08:03]Yeah, that girl wants to cross FSD side and it's been years since I've been here in this uh area. Who? So FSD was moving out of the way for that guy on his scooter that was overtaking me on the right side.

[00:08:32]So here I need to go to the left.

[00:08:37]Tiny tiny streets.

[00:08:42]Interesting.

[00:08:45]Well, the deviation at least came in handy to discover some more of these tiny streets.

[00:08:58]Now this is quite steep.

[00:09:07]That was close, I think, for the splitter.

[00:09:12]And that's interesting. What will FSD do? Will it go into the parking area?

[00:09:16]Oh, yeah.

[00:09:19]It leaves more than enough room for that cyclist.

[00:09:27]More bumps.

[00:09:36]And this is going to be narrow as well.

[00:09:41]Here there's a car behind me probably thinking, "Why aren't you going faster?" But I wouldn't go any faster myself. What is it going to do? Is it going to let it pass? Yes.

[00:10:00]Cyclist from the left. Another car coming. When is it going to go?

[00:10:08]FSD is slanted on the on the bump. So, it is hesitating now. It should move.

[00:10:24]It's going to let that car pass first.

[00:10:32]And that guy is just in the road. Yeah.

[00:10:36]People are not paying attention at all. It's like, yeah, I'll keep my door open as wide as possible.

[00:10:52]However, I need to go straight on according to the navigation.

[00:11:14]That open door is sticking out a little bit for that container, but still had enough room.

[00:11:42]It's amazing how FSD just sees everything.

[00:11:58]So here at the end we need to go to the right and then immediately back to the left towards the uh city park and then we go through the train station which should be a busy area as well.

[00:12:53]That guy standing close to the side of the road.

[00:13:15]Now this is interesting.

[00:13:17]Somebody is parked here blocking the road.

[00:13:24]Will FS do do Will FSD do anything?

[00:13:29]It is saying it is going next to it.

[00:13:34]Yeah. So FSD just gave up. wanted me to take over.

[00:13:41]This is something it could not handle.

[00:13:44]And uh yeah, it just gave up. So like, yeah, I'm done. I'm parked.

[00:13:58]But again, what it needed to do to get past that was drive on the bicycle lane, which was a like a sidewalk bicycle lane kind of thing. And I assume it uh does not want to do that as it is not allowed to do that in theory.

[00:14:24]Yeah, that was an interesting deviation for sure.

[00:14:42]As soon as it turned green, it started creeping forward already.

[00:15:03]Okay.

[00:15:12]And now we need to go around this little central perk.

[00:15:19]Needs to move over. Correct. Come on.

[00:15:24]It's not moving over. Wow. That was not good.

[00:15:30]had to take over because the car was not moving over on time to get to the right lane.

[00:15:53]Now I need to go to the right here. Let me do this manually.

[00:15:58]first to get us back on track and reactivate FSD.

[00:16:13]See, it failed to see that that right lane, well, actually it did see it. It wanted to initiate the left change, but because it was in a turn, it refused to do the left change.

[00:16:25]See here again, it needs to go into the other lane and it doesn't do it.

[00:16:44]Now, I fully understand that these are not standard road conditions for most of you, but it is what it is here in Antworp, and you have to change lanes quite quickly to get into the right presorting lane at the traffic lights.

[00:17:03]Seems to be kind of a problem for FSD.

[00:17:10]Let's see what the rest will do.

[00:17:20]It was hesitating to start there as well.

[00:17:47]The first few small roads gave me a lot of confidence in FSD, but right now it has made a couple of mistakes quite quickly, one after the other.

[00:18:19]It's an interesting choice to drive.

[00:18:37]Okay. Small passage here and then we need to go to the left.

[00:19:18]So, let's see. In a little while we have to do a sharp right turn.

[00:20:58]So right in front of us that uh purple building that's our central station, one of the most beautiful stations in Europe.

[00:21:07]So if you are in the area of Antworp, definitely pay that a visit.

[00:21:15]And the zoo is actually right behind it.

[00:21:17]So, it's easy with a train ticket to visit the zoo.

[00:21:29]Now, a little bit of bigger roads to get to the other side of the lion, uh, as they call it here.

[00:21:48]Going to pass a few more traffic lights with lane changes there probably. So, we'll see how it reacts there.

[00:22:42]So, here we turn to the right and then we end up at the same city park again.

[00:22:46]So, I'm expecting there to have some more of these uh traffic lights.

[00:23:11]Red car parked in the road, unloading stuff, automatically sees it and moves into the next lane. Oh, that was almost over that center white line.

[00:23:28]Another car broken down here on the road apparently or somebody who just Well, it's Antworp. Sometimes they just park in the middle of the road for grabbing some cash or whatever.

[00:23:52]So even though that person was standing there now ready to uh use the zebra crossing, it didn't stop because the traffic light was red for that person. So it just depends on whether or not there's a traffic light, whether or not FSD will take it into account.

[00:24:25]Yeah. Moving out of the way for that truck that was parked a little bit too far onto the road.

[00:24:39]So going straight on. Needs to go all the way to the right here. Yes, that is doing fine. Oh, and they are that person was not doing fine.

[00:25:04]Some cobblestone with Tmway.

[00:25:11]doesn't seem to pose any issues. Will it stop for that person? Yes. Even though this was not an official crossing point.

[00:25:37]Sharp turn to avoid those stones.

[00:26:25]Yeah, car coming through.

[00:26:33]Those people are nearing the crosswalk and FSD does not react to it. So, it really interprets the intention of somebody wanting to use the crosswalk.

[00:26:45]I find that really amazing that it's able to do that.

[00:27:09]See, there are quite a few people coming from the side streets and we need to go to the right and then immediately another right.

[00:27:19]Let's see if it pushes through when people are coming or whether it's going to wait for everybody.

[00:27:37]up. Nope. Not waiting.

[00:27:51]People are standing in the way.

[00:27:58]I can still drive in, right?

[00:28:01]Oh, that's interesting.

[00:28:03]is going to have to force through before letting those cyclists pass.

[00:29:12]Look how careful this is. Come on. How can you not allow this as a safety feature on the road? Right.

[00:29:42]That is kind of the pedestrian part of the road.

[00:29:59]Find it weird that I'm driving here. It does not feel like I'm supposed to be driving here, but there's not a car behind me. So, seems to be okay. That person has no clue that he's standing in the middle of the road.

[00:30:41]Lots of people here. They're all turning onto the sidewalk and they're sticking there. Are they going to cross? No.

[00:30:53]Oh, just waiting for that cyclist.

[00:31:22]These kinds of things is what FSD is good at. And then it messes up at the traffic lights earlier. I think it's really weird. Did Did it see that woman in blue here? She was next to the car and just looking to Hey, can I cross here? Wow.

[00:31:51]Nicely waiting for that motorcycle.

[00:32:09]Yeah. I mean, it's great at doing this and it shows the active safety that the whole system has. It just takes everything around it into account and everyone around it as well.

[00:32:49]So now it's going to have to stay behind the cyclist. Probably there's not enough room to pass it.

[00:33:03]And then we are heading to our final waypoint for the day, which should be I think if I remember correctly, it's the Chinatown area, which is also usually quite busy. And here. Oh my god, so many people.

[00:33:21]Will it ever get through? Yes or no?

[00:33:33]So, waiting for those people and then they're coming from the left here or from the right, I should say.

[00:33:40]Will it go? Will it go? Yes, it's trying to go. It's trying to go. Come on. Nope.

[00:36:05]All right. Now, we have to move to the right here to get to our final destination.

[00:36:33]It's not 100% clear. I don't think this is a very intuitive intersection here, but it did it.

[00:36:50]So, that's nice again.

[00:36:58]But I think for my car, that pedestrian section we just passed is definitely the hardest it has had to navigate.

[00:37:12]And it did it.

[00:37:14]I was getting, again, as I mentioned before in in several other videos, I was beginning to lose my patience and I would have gone through, but the car just has infinite patience and it waited until it saw the right gap to start pushing through a little bit.

[00:37:35]So, yeah, that's great.

[00:37:40]All right. See the traffic lights really well. It also stops in the right places so it can continue to see the traffic lights.

[00:38:03]But for some reason, we're kind of stuck here now.

[00:38:10]And there is a tram coming and that bus is blocking the tram. Now we have right of way for the tram I or no the tram always has right of way I think.

[00:38:34]It's it's waiting for the tram. Awesome.

[00:38:38]This is exactly one of the concerns that our Flemish minister Anik Das actually had that it was uh not giving priority to tramps and it definitely did give priority to the tram. Awesome.

[00:43:12]When I go to a city, I always try to go into the Chinatown part because it's always I find those shops have quite the special atmosphere and especially if there's like a gate such as this one, it is so nice to see.

[00:43:35]And in front of us, we have the train station again with a ferris wheel in front of it apparently.

[00:43:44]But um yeah, as I mentioned, definitely worth a visit in Antworp.

[00:44:07]So yeah, that concludes our test in the heart of Antworp.

[00:44:26]Or would you not trust it enough to let it do its thing? It's definitely an interesting experience today and uh yeah, we learned quite a few things especially that what I thought was the hardest part turned out to be the part where it shined quite good. Like here, it just knows that it can go around this taxi car and immediately needs to go back because I'm I'm on the tram road.

[00:45:03]But it does that so well. It does that so confidently. It's amazing what it can do. But it's still very obviously a level two system and neither Tesla nor anybody else that is involved in the autopilot system or in the FSD system is actually claiming anything else.

[00:45:27]But some people believe that this is the end already and this is where you can go to sleep. No, it's something where you still need to be very much attentive and you have to take over when necessary, which I did a couple of times. But nevertheless, as I mentioned, it is amazing how it handles pedestrians, cyclists, the busy city traffic, the blockages of the road, all that kind of stuff. And for that, I love it 100%.
