The Khmer Rouge regime, led by Pol Pot in Cambodia from 1975 to 1979, systematically killed up to 2 million people (a quarter of Cambodia's population) through policies that targeted intellectuals, professionals, and anyone perceived as educated, including those who wore glasses, while children were recruited as soldiers and ordered to kill their own parents; despite these atrocities, Pol Pot was never executed and died peacefully in 1998.
