Deep within the remote and beautiful Omo Valley of Southern Ethiopia [music] live the Karo people, who are one of East Africa's smallest yet most visually stunning tribes. The people of the Karo tribe are true masters of body [music] painting. By mixing white chalk powder, yellow mineral ore, and [music] red clay with animal fat, they decorate their faces, chests, and arms with beautiful geometric designs, [music] dots, lines, and circles. Every single design tells a story of age, [music] social status, beauty, and personal achievement.

[00:01:33]Their neighbors, the Mursi, are considered one of the most unique tribes.

[00:01:38]Women of the Mursi tribe in Ethiopia are world-famous for their lip plates. These are round discs made of clay that are inserted into the lower lip when a girl reaches about 15 or 16 years of age.

[00:01:50][music] Over time, larger discs are added, which gradually stretch the lip. This lip plate is a symbol of their identity and has historically held great significance [music] at the time of marriage. In some traditional families, the groom's family might have to pay a dowry of up to 38 [music] cows for a bride wearing a large-sized lip plate. In addition to this, the scarification marks on their bodies are created through deep cuts, which eventually heal [music] into a variety of unique patterns, just as they imagine them.

One of their most unique traditions is the bull jumping ceremony, [music] where a young boy must run and leap across the backs of a long row of bulls without slipping in order to prove his transition into manhood.

[00:03:05]The horns of these animals can grow up to 8 m long from one tip to the other, making them one of the most spectacular cattle breeds in the world. For the Mundari people, every bull is like a family member. Every animal has a name, and the larger and more impressive a bull's horns are, the higher its owner's status in society. [music] Some, moreover, songs are even sung in honor of special bulls. [music] The most distinct and unique custom of the Mundari people is [music] their daily use of cow urine. They collect fresh urine and use it as a natural wash, soap, [music] and skin protectant.

[00:03:43]When mixed with the ash of burnt cow dung, this mixture forms a thin layer [music] on the skin that shields it from insect bites and the harsh sun, while also helping prevent certain [music] skin infections.

[00:03:54]As a result, their skin becomes clean and smooth. [music] This has brought international recognition to Mundari settlements.

[00:04:02]Smoldering [music] piles of cow dung surround their camps, releasing a soft white smoke. [music] The Mundari people intentionally stand in the smoke to keep mosquitoes at bay and dry the morning dew from their skin.

[00:04:19]Here, cattle function as the fundamental currency of life. [music] They serve as dowries, gifts, and a means to resolve mutual disputes. [music] However, South Sudan is the world's youngest nation, which gained independence only in 2011, and it has gone through severe internal conflicts.

[00:04:47]In the dry grasslands near Lake Eyasi [music] in northern Tanzania, you will find a community whose lifestyle is older than agriculture itself. [music] The Hadzabe people are one of the last remaining hunter-gatherer communities on Earth, and their way of life has remained almost unchanged for over 40,000 years.

[00:07:46]Spanning nearly 241 km, it [music] is the world's largest permanent desert lake, and its waters gleam with a stunning blue-green hue.

[00:08:01]Some of the oldest human ancestral fossils ever found were discovered [music] right on the eastern shores of Lake Turkana, including the famous Turkana Boy, which is an exceptionally well-preserved skeleton of a young Homo erectus dating back nearly 1.5 [music] million years.

[00:08:18]The Turkana people herd cattle, goats, [music] and especially camels. In this arid desert landscape, camels are their primary lifeline. [00:09:13]Using materials readily available in the desert, such as dry grass, acacia twigs, palm leaves, and animal hides, they build [music] simple, yet incredibly sturdy, dome-shaped huts.

[00:09:30]During important rituals and festivals, families gathered to honor their ancestors, pray for rain and the prosperity of their cattle [music] and strengthen the bonds that help them pull through difficult times. Their everyday life is bound to water. Every single drop is precious to them.

[00:09:50]The Turkana people constantly face challenges, severe droughts, food shortages, and the growing impact of climate [music] change mean that water is considered their most sacred resource.

[00:10:06]Living near a volatile border also means [music] they must always remain alert and prepared. Deep within the Namib Desert, along the dry riverbeds of northern Namibia, you will find a community often regarded as one of the most beautiful people in Africa.

[00:10:22]The Himba people, descendants of the Herero group, have lived here for centuries.

[00:10:27]The Namib Desert is one of the oldest deserts on Earth, dating back more than 55 million years.

[00:10:34]>> [music] >> Every morning, Himba women perform a ritual that has become famous around the world. They blend butter fat [music] with finely ground red ochre to create a thick paste called otjize.

[00:10:45]This paste is then applied to their skin, face, and long braided hair, giving the Himba people's skin a distinctive reddish-pink glow [music] while shielding it from the scorching desert sun and harsh winds, as well as keeping insects at bay, which helps [music] because clean water is highly precious here.

[00:11:03]Consequently, traditional Himba women rarely bathe with water. Instead, they burn herbs and aromatic resins in a small clay pot and [music] cleanse their bodies and clothing with the fragrant smoke.

[00:11:15]Himba society reflects strong matrilineal elements, where property rights and inheritance are passed down through the mother's line.

[00:11:22]The men spend long periods away in distant pastures herding cattle, [music] and during those weeks, the entire village is managed primarily by the women themselves. These temporary shelters are so lightweight that when the clan needs to move on, they can be dismantled immediately. Yet, they are sturdy enough to provide shade and protection from harsh weather.

[00:12:12]Despite numerous hardships, severe droughts, water scarcity, and the [music] constant challenge of finding pastures, the Himba people have not only found a way to survive, but have also developed a rich and beautiful way of life. [music] Their deep connection to their cattle, their land, and ancient traditions makes [music] them one of Africa's most resilient and stunningly beautiful communities.

[00:12:43]The dry spells are growing longer, forcing some Himba families to move closer to towns, where the pressure to abandon their traditions is constantly increasing. In the rocky hills of the Omo region, to the [music] west of Mursi territory, live the Suri people. They are pastoralists, protectors of their land, >> [music] >> and are regarded as some of Africa's finest visual artists. The Suri transform their bodies into [music] living pieces of art. Both Suri men and women use white chalk [music] and colored clay to paint beautiful patterns, dots, and circles on their faces, chests, [music] arms, and legs.

[00:13:19]These stunning white designs are not just for decoration. These markings are a powerful expression [music] of beauty, identity, bravery, and social status.

[00:13:29]Each generation passes down this visual language, and a young Suri can read the paintings on another person's body as easily as reading a page from a book.

[00:13:38]Like their neighboring Mursi tribe, [music] some Suri women also wear lip plates. The Suri people are deeply devoted pastoralists, but life here is incredibly harsh, marked by prolonged droughts and limited water resources.

[00:13:52]Yet, the Suri people possess incredible resilience and [music] strength.

[00:13:57]The most famous tradition of the Suri people is a competition called the Donga. [music] Young men face each other with long wooden poles, engaging in traditional stick fighting to test their bravery and discipline.

[00:14:14]A Donga winner receives immense honor within his clan [music] and is considered an ideal life partner for marriage.

[00:15:12]The Danakil Depression sits about 120 m below sea level, where daytime temperatures frequently soar past 50° C.

[00:15:22]This makes it one of the hottest and most unforgiving places on the planet.

[00:15:26]Yet, this is exactly where the Afar people have lived for centuries. On this seemingly uninhabitable land, the Afar people have built a society that has endured for centuries.

[00:15:50]They loaded these salt blocks onto the backs of camels, forming caravans to transport them hundreds of kilometers through the desert to inland markets.

[00:15:58]This trade predates the formation of most countries in the world. The Afar people are considered among the toughest human beings on Earth. Their bodies have adapted to this scorching [music] heat, and their lean lightweight build helps them cover long distances with very little water.

Women hold a powerful voice in community decisions. Wealth is shared among everyone, and personal property is strictly limited to the essentials.

In the early 1990s, the Botswana government displaced many San families from their ancestral lands inside the Central Kalahari Game Reserve. This was followed by a protracted legal battle, and many San communities are still [music] forced to live on the fringes of their traditional territories today.
