Erica’s academic pedigree brings a refined depth to the reaction, though the pivot from vocal technique to broad sociological commentary feels a bit over-intellectualized. It is a classic case of a high-knowledge creator trying to find profound social meaning in a rock concert.

Elton John - Funeral For a Friend Love Lies Bleeding Central Park 1980 - REACTIONAdded:
We are going to listen to Elton John today, A Funeral for a Friend and Love Lies Bleeding from a live performance in 1980, Central Park, New York. And someone requested this and uh yeah, they said it's one of their high school favorites and I haven't had that much Elton John. And these are Elton John songs I do not know unless they were like in the background of the movie cuz I saw his biopic, but I never like listened to this. Okay, let's see.
[cheering] Wow, so famous.
Oh, wow. The music sounds creepy. It's called Funeral for a Friend. I never knew that.
Turn it up all the way.
Heat up here.
>> [music] >> Wow, with a view of all the buildings.
That's so cool.
[music] I didn't know they did concerts in Central Park.
It's pretty epic.
[cheering] [music] Ooh. Minor chord.
>> [music] >> A, [music] it's so adorable.
[music] >> [music] >> Make it a little bigger.
[music] [music] [music] Like his glowing shirt.
Heat. Heat.
[music] [music] >> [music] >> Heat. Heat.
>> [music] >> This is so good. It's like minor key city. [music] It's my kind of song and dramatic.
It's like a like a musical or something.
[music] Heat.
[music] [music] Heat.
>> [music] [music] [music] >> Okay. I didn't know how that was going to go. Look at this guitarist in that 80s shirt.
[music] [music] [music] >> [music] >> Okay. Yes. Bill. Bill, give me something.
[music] Wish the piano was louder. I feel like they have too much on the [music] guitars.
I got my wish. I got a solo basically.
[music] [music] The roses in your window outside. [music] Everything I found this house was >> I've never heard this very day.
[music] He said sorry if you don't change the face. I can't ask another day [music and singing] in MY HEAD.
I [music] think I you I [music] just [music] love [music] my hand.
[music] I wonder [music] if those changes in the sky on you [music] [music] [music] change down your face somehow [music] in my Yeah.
[music] You love me.
I [music] just [music] [music] feel in [singing] my hand.
Heat.
[music] [cheering] Heat.
[music] >> [music] >> Heat. Heat.
[music] >> [music] >> Heat.
Heat. [music] [music] Heat. Heat. Heat.
[singing] [music] Heat. Heat. Heat.
[music] Heat.
Heat.
[music] [singing] >> [music] [music] >> Heat. Heat.
[music] Wat.
[music] [music] [music] [music] >> [music] >> Heat [music] up here.
[music] >> [music] [cheering] >> That was so good. So, the reason I started getting teareyed is like, okay, this is 1980, guys, and Elton John was so brave to be so openly gay. Like, you don't understand. Like back then in the olden times like you realize 1980 was 46 years ago.
46 years ago you couldn't just be gay. Okay? Like you could not just be like flamboyantly gay.
It was not socially accepted.
People probably just made jokes all the time like that's so gay. They used to say the f a g word. H okay. And uh tons of like homosexual slurs and all that.
And um he's just like, sorry I say like so much, but he is I'm just going to be very direct. He is wearing a very shiny outfit with a big gold sequins on it.
All right. And he has glitter on his face. And he is just unequivocally himself. he is just the person he was born to be. Um and in my generation this was much more accepted. Um I remember just one kid he you know he told us secretly that he was gay like uh senior year of high school but some people came out in high school. Now kids come out when they're like sorry that I say like but some kids come out at 12 years old. Okay. It is very except maybe too too much. Maybe Gen Z is too identified. They say 60% of Gen Z think they're queer or something like it's like overly done now. It's like I'm this, I'm that, I'm pansexual. I'm sapioexual. I'm whatever. Okay, I'm non-binary. Something whatever. I'm just saying now it's completely normal to be gay. It's not weird or anything. It's not something to be make fun of. But at the time, I think a lot of people were extremely closeted. Well, and society did not allow it. People would disown their children. People would unal alive themselves if they were not accepted or their parents wouldn't allow them to live a certain way.
Um, but yeah, there was a there's always been an underground scene, you know, gay bars and stuff like that, but it's not it wasn't out in the open. Okay. So, I think for him to be just I'm just going to be this flamboyant dude and just play my piano on stage and all these people accepted him.
That's the beautiful thing of it.
Everybody at this big Central Park concert is just rocking out and they don't care what he is. They just think he's great because he can sing and he can play piano and he can perform and I just think that is the most beautiful thing. So it made me a bit tearary. The opening song, A Funeral for a friend, was so durable, just like you would think a funeral for a friend would be.
Very minor keyesque. And then this Love Lies bleeding song just rocks out and they had a seamless transition between them. I wasn't even sure when it switched songs because I don't know them, right? So I was like, I think we're in the second song now. But uh it was really good. I was just rocking out.
I had to get my Yoshis to take out my excitement, you know, cuz again, I'm ADHD. I like to fiddle with things. So I realized my Yoshis give me an extension of myself. Like I can use them as drumsticks. I can make them dance. They are like they're like showing my excitement inside like my ADD me you know the excitement. So I get to be through my little puppets the excitement because I can't physically be on screen and also be jumping around because I wouldn't be on the screen. I'd be over there and running around the room. So no I this is my way that I can contain myself and focus a bit by putting my energy into my dolls. Um if that makes sense. I know it's like why does she have dolls? Because they're excited.
They're cute and they like to dance so why not? But yes, Elton John is so good and I I didn't get to see him young very much. I mentioned in a different video when I was a girl, the first thing I knew and John was from the Lion King movie. He did Can You Feel the Love Tonight? And then when Princess Diana died, he redid the Candle in the Wind.
And I remember watching Princess Diana's funeral because I'm a big Princess die fan.
Still am. I mean, that was a tragic death. And then just to think of what's happened with Harry marrying that woman. Uh if all the American women her why not me but I was already a divorce. So was she?
But I had children. If only I had gotten Prince Harry. I would have not been such a weird crazy I mean you know Megan Markle convinced him that she didn't know who he was.
It's the best story of all time. She got that anchor to introduce them and then when they were first hanging out, she I don't really know who you are or I didn't really know much about the monarchy. You know, America, we don't really know. I'm like, are you kidding me? Prince William and Prince Harry were on the cover of every teen girl magazine when we were growing up. We definitely know who they are. So, at least Prince William has an amazing wife. I love Kate Middleton. She is going to be the queen we always wanted. She already is the Princess of Wales. we always wanted.
Kate Middleton is class. Kate Middleton is amazing.
Megan Markle is a scammer. [laughter] Just straight up, she's a scammer. Uh, and that poor I would never I would never have taken Harry away from his family. You know, if you're going to marry into the royal family, you know what that comes with? That comes with leaving America, being part of the monarchy, and doing your royal duty. You don't try to then become a Netflix star.
Uh, and remember she was first on the show where you open up the suitcase, whatever that one's called, you know, guess the money and then you open the suitcase, whatever, as a model. Then she did her suit show, which was her best she ever became. It's like a B actor level, honestly. Maybe sealless really if you think about it. So she was a B movie, not a movie star. who's a bee TV actress and then she was able to meet Prince Harry who we all know had a very troubled past from some bad choices when he was young. But he's like a decorated military hero. I mean, he's amazing. I love Prince Harry. I think he's so cute.
He's much cuter than Prince William.
Let's be honest. But Prince William, he is going to be our king. So, I respect him. Notice how I said our king. I'm like an American. I'm like I'm a monarchist.
Um I think it's good. I think it's good to have a monarchy because when you don't have a monarchy, you end up with the Kardashians, okay?
Which is this this uh adherence. It's like this obsession with movie stars, right? It's like, oh, it's like when Paris Hilton was famous just for being rich, okay? It's like Kim Kardashian.
It's this idea that, oh wow, what are the celebrities doing? Cuz people always want to know what the rich people are doing. It's kind of society. So if you have a monarchy to take that place then they can have an elected government such as a prime minister who then we don't get so involved in the prime minister's social doings right we don't really care what the prime minister of the UK is doing it they just talk about their politics right but because we don't have that that's why we're so into this you know the president here and all the senators and congress people they become the kind of little celebrities and I just don't think they should be they should just be politicians and just be doing their job. So, I do think in that it's good to have the royal family because it gives us something to think to talk about cuz people like to know which princess is wearing what freaking hat and princess Eugeny and Beatatrice with their terrible hats and that's so sad cuz their dad is Prince Andrew who's now been de princed and I guess arrested now. So, that was messed up. How about we don't cover up crime just cuz you're royal, you know? But if you're the younger brother and were spoiled your whole life, you're going to make stupid decisions. So, whatever. Prince Andrew was always a weirdo. [snorts] Um, we know that. Anyway, sorry. I just have to talk about England if I'm talking about a British singer songwriter. And Nelson John had a songwriting partner. He was the genius behind the music, the melodies, but he did not write the words. So he had a songwriter, lyricist, which is very normal. That's what they do in musical theater. It's like Rogers and Hammerstein, Learner and Low, even Alan Menin and Steven Schwarz work together. Tim Rice with Andrew Lloyd Weber. Okay, so you it's very normal to have a lyricist for composers. It's very rare that a composer can do both, but it does happen. All right. So, Elgen John is just fabulous. And I love that he had such big crowd, a big crowd in 1980 was so popular. This before I was born, but just to see everyone so happy. I love pre 911 New York City. It's great. Um cuz, you know, 911 for me in high school was kind of a downer and then everything kind of got different after that. So, whenever I think about America in the '9s and the 80s, I'm like, "Oh, it's so good back then." And then 2001, September 11th, and then everything changed. And that's been the reality I've been an adult in, right? Because that happened when I was in high school.
And then all my friends had to go to the Iraq war and the Afghanistan war. A lot of boys from my high school went to the military. And uh the world changed unfortunately. So I feel this was a real golden age of America where there was relatively low conflict and kind of national unity around music especially.
So I like to watch it just cuz it makes me feel like ah New York City 1980. I think of all the movies from the8s that took place in 1980 in the '8s in general and the music videos. I'm like ah such a good time. So I loved this. That's my reaction. It's a little bit long- winded and a little bit off topic, but that's what I like about my reactions. I don't just talk about the music and go, "Wow, it's the best thing I ever heard." I I think of like, "Wow, this reminded me of homosexuality in America and how it used to be shunned." And then I go into Megan Markle. Well, because Princess died.
Poor Princess Diana. Didn't she get dealt a bad hand? One, never go into an arranged marriage with a man who's like 13 years older than you. Everybody should know that. That was just a cruel That was just a cruel thing to do. And he loved Camila. Anyway, King I get to say king now. I've never even said King Charles. King Charles. I've never said that out loud. Wow. Because I don't talk about King Charles because he's like he'll be there for a while. But then we're going to get King William and we'll have a golden age. King William needs to fix everything in the UK though, which there's a lot of problems.
I mean, we have problems, too. But King William needs to fix a lot of problems.
Kate Middleton will do it. But anyway, King Charles loved Camila from young.
And then his mother, the queen, may she rest in peace. Um, she did not allow the marriage because she was so traumatized by her uncle who abdicated from the throne. he was the king and he literally married Wallace Simpson who was an American actress. She was so traumatized by that that she wouldn't let her son, the heir to the throne, marry a divorce. And so for his whole life, he loved that woman, Camila, and he wasn't allowed to marry her. And instead, they're like, "You will marry this royal woman, Diana Spencer, and she's 13 years younger than you, and you have nothing in common."
And he's like, "Well, I'm kind of a jerk royal kid who just grew up with all the rich kids in England. I'm going to treat her like garbage cuz one, I don't even love her. to I'm just fulfilling my duty. They don't say duty, they say duty. I've seen the crown. It's like duty. So duty is like what you have to do when you're royal. It's not what you want to do, but it's what you have to do for the crown. So it's like you must marry princess die for the crown anyway.
But then she was she thought she was going into a marriage for love. And then she found out she was just a pawn. She was just used for her breeding basically to produce heirs and uh then sadly once she was persona non grata just that car accident and it was just terrible. But I do love Diana's revenge dress. It was one of the best was one of the best moments in like history, you know, red carpet history, honestly. Oh, that revenge dress and that was like that '9s velvet off the shoulder thing, big puffy sleeves. It was good times. All right. Well, um, that was my weird reaction to Elton John. Hopefully, you guys get who I am and that I'm not like other reactors. I don't really even watch reactor channels because I don't want to just do what everyone else is doing. I just was like, "Oh, you can react to music. Cool. I'm just going to be myself and just react and just tell you what goes through my mind because this is how my ADHD mind works every day. My mind is on all these tangents all the time." I was like, "Well, what if I can just say that out loud and verbalize it? You guys might find that interesting. All right. Well, good old Elton John. Love this so much.
