[00:02:14]Hi everyone, welcome to Wilpatu National Park. Today we are exploring the largest national park in Sri Lanka. This place means more to us than just a safari destination. In Sri Lanka, this is where it all began. you know where we fell in love with wildlife, we fell in love with safaris, we started photography, everything happened in Sri Lanka. So coming back here brings back so many wonderful memories.

[00:03:22]Wilpatu National Park is one of the best places in the country to see the Sri Lankan leopard. Not just leopards, you can also see sloth bears, heads of elephants, antelopes, and over 200 bird species.

[00:03:36]>> So, with all that in mind, let's move on to our evening game drive here in Bilpat National Park. Let's see how lucky we can get. Yeah.

[00:04:15]Filming the little chaos of the wild is always something we look forward to. Not even 10 minutes into our evening game drive, we came across our first leopard sighting. And not just one, but two, the Guru Tupandi leopard cubs. Full of playfulness and energy, they played endlessly, giving us a sighting we will remember for a lifetime.

[00:06:09]It's a beautiful morning in Milhatu. So, uh, we had some alarm calls last night around 2:00 a.m. And, uh, now we are going to that area and also tracking pug marks and trying to see whether we can find any special sighting. So, let's hope for the best, guys.

[00:07:24]This time we were lucky enough to encounter one of Wilpatu's well-known male leopards.

[00:07:30]What's really fascinating is how different Sri Lanka's leopards are compared to the ones you see on African safaris.

[00:07:39]Here they move around with so much confidence during the day. They sit right at the top of the food chain with no predators to threaten them. So daytime sightings like this are actually quite common in Wilpatu.

[00:09:21]So when you compare the national parks in Sri Lanka and in Kenya, there are some interesting ing differences in things like the landscape, the type of animals, and what it's like when it comes to photography and filming. So, let's break that down to see how they stand apart.

[00:09:44]Sri Lanka's national parks may be smaller, but they're incredibly diverse.

[00:09:49]Within a one park you can move through forest, wetlands, grasslands and even coastal areas.

[00:09:59]Kenya on the other hand is all about those wide open savylvanas.

[00:10:04]The parks are massive and spotting animals in the open is much easier.

[00:10:15]In Kenya, you're surrounded by large iconic mammals, lions, elephants, giraffes, rhinos, and huge herds of wilderbeast.

[00:10:31]It's a classic big five territory.

[00:10:34]Sri Lanka's wildlife feels more subtle and surprising.

[00:10:39]Leopards moving through dense forest, elephants, sloth bears, and rich variety of birds.

[00:10:49]Here it's more about patience and waiting for the right moment.

[00:11:01]Kenya's open plains gives you dramatic golden hour scenes, wide landscapes, long horizons and powerful silhouettes.

[00:11:11]Sri Lanka's jungles create a completely different mood with rich green tones and soft filtered light coming through the canopy.

[00:11:21]It offers a very different photographic vibe.

[00:11:30]In Kenya, it's often about scanning was plain and following tracks with your guide. Sightings can be more frequent and easier to photograph in open spaces.

[00:11:44]In Sri Lanka, the window of opportunity is much smaller and once animals disappear into the forest, you can't follow them.

[00:11:57]Unlike in Kenya, off-road driving is not allowed. And in thick forest, off-roading isn't practical anyway.

[00:12:21]It is bit of a slow evening. So um now it's almost 6 and uh now we are heading back to the bungalow.

[00:12:30]It's like that you know some days you have lot of access some days you find nothing. So it's a evening like that.

[00:13:14]We came across this same male leopard we saw in the morning. It was so nice to see him walking in that golden light on that white sand road. It's a beautiful sighting to end the day.

[00:13:28]That's the most magical part of safari.

[00:13:31]You never know how the day will unfold.

[00:14:52]Their mom left them there like for past 4 days and didn't return yet. So while they wait for their mom, they're playing around, spending time together, which has become a beautiful sighting throughout the day. So we are going to spend some more hours here and see whether they're going to reunite with their mother.

[00:16:25]The leopard mom didn't show up. We waited there for like good 2 hours and then we gave up the sighting and came back to the bungalow to have lunch. We are going to try that sighting again in the evening game drive. Let's see. Let's see how it goes. Uh we don't know whether the mom will show up because she's been gone for past 4 days and the cubs were the juveniles were there.

[00:16:51]Uh yeah. So uh let's see.

[00:17:10]This time we are doing things little differently. Unlike the safaris we have done in Kenya, in Sri Lanka there are no luxury camps or resorts within the national park. Instead, we are staying in one of the government bungalows located inside the national park. So, these bungalows are very simple. It comes with minimum facilities, but it's right in the heart of nature and there are no Wi-Fi, no network. So, you're completely disconnected from the outside world.

[00:17:58]We came to the usual spot where we saw the leopards in the morning. Right now there's no sign of them. It seems they reunited with their mother again. So um now we are driving around to see what other animals we can find.

[00:18:52]We just came back to the bungalow after finishing off our evening game drive.

[00:18:57]Overall, it's a good day. We're going to call it a night and then we'll see you tomorrow.

[00:19:40]It's 6:00 a.m. in the morning and uh Bell Park will look so magical at this time which is beautiful. I mean when you stay inside the national park at this hour you get it all to yourself because all these jeeps coming from outside the park it takes around 1 hour to 45 minutes for them to reach here. At this hour if you find a sighting you have it all to yourself.

[00:20:11]So yeah right now we are tracking the pug marks and uh as always and then try to find leopard sighting.

[00:20:20]Let's see how the day unfolds.

[00:21:01]We did manage to spot a leopard. But the sighting didn't last long. It quickly disappeared back into the forest. Hoping for a better luck ahead, we continued with our safari.

[00:21:30]We were about to go back to the bungalow for lunch when we spotted our second leopard sighting of the day. And this one was special. It was the mother of the cubs we saw on day one. What an unforgettable encounter.

[00:22:03]So we skipped lunch and waited here for more than 2 hours. Now the leopard is on the tree. As we anticipated was a good sighting.

[00:23:04]We waited for another hour and then the sighting took a beautiful turn. The two cubs slowly made their way towards the nearby lake.

[00:23:15]As siblings, their bond was beautiful to witness. And while it's heartwarming to watch them now, we know that one day they'll walk separate paths.

[00:23:42]Our patients finally finally paid off. On our last day here in Wilpatu, we had once in a lifetime sighting to remember.

[00:24:19]>> So yeah, I mean it took us to skip lunch >> and be very patient than we used to be.

[00:24:28]>> Yeah.

[00:24:29]>> And stay the 2 3 hours, I think.

[00:24:31]>> 3 hours without complaining, wishing the leopards will come out of the jungle.

[00:24:36]>> That's properly a waiting game.

[00:24:38]>> That's a waiting game for sure. But we were offered much more >> than that. So we followed the leopard, the two juvenile cubs. They out of the jungle and then they were heading to the lake. Amazing sighting. It's our last full day.

[00:24:51]>> Yeah. Last full day. And we never thought >> we'll have something like this to end the day.

[00:24:56]>> Quite a rewarding one.

[00:24:57]>> Yeah.

[00:24:58]>> So we will call it a day. Uh and we'll have uh you know dinner, I think.

[00:25:05]>> Yes. But there's there's due lunch as well >> combined with it.

[00:25:27]Of course, uh we're going to miss Sri Lanka a lot uh once we go. I think we had an amazing safari here in Vipatu. Most of all, we're going to miss this tranquil, the simple life here, you know, morning waking up, having a tea, get going, tracking leopards, um, you know, enjoying the sunlight, basking in the enormous things that Bilpatu had to offer.

[00:27:41]Guys, this is the last morning. Um, our first sighting is another set of leopards. As you and I, some adults, those two cubs were amazing. We were just enjoying this morning drive, you know, looking at the sunrise and all that. And there they are. You know, it's just the number of leopards we saw here is just crazy.

[00:28:29]This was the most exciting part when we planned this trip to Sri Lanka and now this coming to an end kind of make me sad.

[00:29:05]This felt like the perfect way to end our time here. Five unforgettable days, the most soulful safari we have ever experienced in Sri Lanka. Signing off from this magical island, carrying the hope that this won't be our last.
