The Agulhas Current off South Africa's southeastern coast is one of Earth's most dangerous ocean currents, where rogue waves taller than buildings can form without warning, having caused centuries of shipwrecks and the 1982 Ocean Ranger disaster that killed 84 workers; scientists now recognize this current as one of the most likely locations on Earth for rogue waves to form, which can snap steel ships apart in minutes.

THE DEADLIEST CURRENT ON EARTHAdded:
Sailors called it the ocean current that eats ships. Off the southeastern coast of Africa, flows one of the most dangerous currents on Earth.
The Agulhas Current. At first glance, it looks harmless. Just another powerful stream of warm ocean water moving through the Indian Ocean.
But beneath the surface, the Agulhas Current becomes a trap. The water can move faster than 5 mph. Massive waves form without warning. And when strong storms collide with the current moving in the opposite direction, the ocean suddenly changes shape. Walls of water appear out of nowhere. Rogue waves taller than buildings. Some reaching over 60 ft high. Ships have vanished here for centuries. Modern cargo vessels, fishing boats, even giant tankers. Many sailors believe the area was cursed. Portuguese explorers once called this coastline the Cape of Storms, because crews who entered the current often never returned. In 1982, a massive ship called the Ocean Ranger encountered extreme waves linked to dangerous current conditions. The entire offshore rig sank. 84 workers died.
Scientists now believe the Agulhas Current is one of the most likely places on Earth for rogue waves to form. Waves so powerful they can snap steel ships apart in minutes.
And the terrifying part is they can appear completely without warning.
One second, the ocean is calm. The next, a wall of water rises out of the darkness.
