Hello everyone.
So because I prepare myself some alkaline polymer gel for one of my projects, for this video I was thinking that I can make another video on this topic how you guys can make yourself your own alkaline polymer gel like I have over here.
>> [music] >> So this kind of alkaline polymer gel can be used like separator and electrolyte at once in your batteries. And the batteries where you can use this alkaline polymer gel will be for example some nickel iron gel battery, zinc manganese dioxide battery, zinc or aluminum air battery, zinc nickel battery and so on. And also the process of making this alkaline polymer gel is also really really simple. And now, let's go to the process.
So first of all, this alkaline polymer gel is actually made from PVA and potassium hydroxide. So for this reason, the materials which you will need will be of course the PVA, then some potassium hydroxide, but instead of potassium hydroxide you can also use sodium hydroxide as well.
>> [snorts] >> And if you want that the polymer gel will have some percentage of flexibility, then I also recommend that you use a little bit of glycerin.
But in case that you don't want or you don't need any kind of flexibility of the polymer gel, then in this case you don't need to use the glycerin.
And in case that you will make this alkaline polymer gel for some zinc-based batteries, then I also recommend to use a little bit of zinc oxide.
And also here I have two beakers, which in one beaker I will prepare the PVA.
>> [snorts] >> And in another beaker, I will prepare the solution of the potassium hydroxide.
But first, I will prepare the PVA.
So, in the first beaker, I will add 30 ml of water.
>> [snorts] >> And in case that you want to have uh some percentage of flexibility, then you will also add a little bit of the glycerin. So, in my case, I will use around 0.5 g of glycerin.
But in case that you want a little bit more flexibility, then you will also add a little bit more of glycerin.
Okay. Okay. This will be enough.
I will also need 3 g of PVA.
Okay.
>> And now I need to heat up to 90° C.
Meanwhile, I will also prepare the second beaker.
>> [snorts] >> And in this beaker I will pour make this potassium hydroxide solution.
So, in the second beaker I will add 10 ml of water.
A little bit less. That's 10 ml.
Okay.
And now I will add um a little bit of potassium hydroxide.
So, in my case I will add 2.5 g of potassium hydroxide.
But in case that you want a little bit um stronger uh alkaline uh polymer gel, then you will also add a little bit more of potassium hydroxide.
>> [snorts] >> So, in my case I will use 2.5 g.
Okay.
And for the finish I will add 0.1 g of zinc oxide.
So, right now I get to 10 ml mark.
>> Okay, the potassium hydroxide solution is ready.
And now I need to wait that the entire PVA will be dissolved.
Okay.
So, the mix reached to 90 91 92 93 degrees C.
Yeah, all the PVA is dissolved.
And now I will add the solution of the potassium hydroxide.
And that's it. And now I will form into this alkaline polymer gel film.
So, in case that you want to have a little bit more thicker uh gel membrane, then you will add more of this mix.
And now what you need to do is to wait couple of days that um the film will be formatted into this.
Also, guys, in case that you want to store this polymer gel film for a little bit longer time, then I recommend that you don't let this polymer gel uh to dry out because when this polymer gel will dry out completely then the polymer gel will be really fragile.
>> [snorts] >> So, I recommend that you you store the polymer gel in some box and on the top you also add a little bit of water and then you seal it. So, this way you can store this polymer gel film for a little bit longer time.
But in case that you dry out the membrane then you will get something like this.
And now, I just want to show you what will be the pH of this finished polymer gel film.
So, actually it's in the region of 11 12.
