Tom Stevens brilliantly uses Chuck McGill’s tragic obsession to demystify the sunk cost fallacy, proving that high intelligence is no shield against self-destructive emotional investments. This analysis elevates standard reaction content into a genuine masterclass on the psychological complexities of human irrationality.

Better Call Saul S3 Ep 3 | First Time Watching | Therapist REACTSAdded:
Oh, this can't be good, Mike.
It's not good. Season 3, episode 3 of Better Call Saul is up.
Oh, wow, look at that.
What is it with those shoes?
>> [music] >> Those shoes must mean something.
Heard sometimes those are like a calling card or those are like a note like this is where a deal goes down or something.
They leave something like that, but I don't know. They got on the wire and got burnt up by the sun, I guess. So, now it's gone.
Oh, yes, remember Mike? The gas cap.
You're busted. And I wish to see your gun.
And if I don't, I promise you won't see mine.
That's Gus Fring, though.
We are. Expect two cars momentarily.
But what does that mean? What do you do with the two cars?
Oh, this can't be good, Mike.
It's not good.
There he is.
I know you've been following me.
Mike and Gus.
You care to elaborate?
It's not in my interest for Hector Salamanca to die. Mhm. Who is he to you?
An associate of an associate. Mhm. How very specific. Who is he to you?
Mhm. We had a disagreement. He threatened my family. I'm not going to let that go.
>> But, you had let it go.
>> You'd taken his money. Your family was no longer in danger.
>> And yet, still, you robbed his truck. He knows everything. I understand that a civilian found the driver after you robbed the truck. Hector murdered this civilian, correct?
Mhm. You hurt Hector when you robbed that truck. You hurt his business, his pride.
Mhm. If you were to hurt him in the same manner again, I would not stand in your way.
>> You want me to rob another truck? If you feel so inclined.
>> [clears throat] >> Oh, Mike.
Goodbye, Mr. Ehrmantraut. Mhm.
Mike, you wanted his truck seized because you want to disrupt his supply line.
Hector's your competition. Why do you ask? Because I'm not done with Hector Salamanca.
>> [laughter] >> So, maybe I want to join up with you, Gustavo Fring.
It's amazing how Jimmy's secretary or Saul's secretary from Breaking Bad here, same lady, right? Looks so fresh and lively and and excited, ready to work. And in in Breaking Bad, she looks completely destroyed. Do me a favor. Tell Kim I won't be back in tonight.
Will do.
Going in. Going in the tank. Somehow they let him go outside.
Have a great [clears throat] night.
Oh, bail bonds.
Who does a guy like Jimmy get to represent him?
I mean, he's going down. There's witnesses and everything.
You know you can wait inside. Oh my gosh.
I cannot stand him.
>> to hear it, but this is for the best.
What a joke.
>> Don't try to smooth anything over. He's outside.
>> think of me, whatever names you're calling me in your head right now.
Amazing how he goes outside and he's fine now.
I think, personally, this is all mental.
He's got a mental disorder, clearly.
But I think he's so in the comfort zone of I did it. I did it. I finally got him. And he's feeling the adrenaline of how good that is to finally get Jimmy that he walked outside. Oh my gosh. Chuck.
>> Here's what's going to happen. Oh, y'all. And you'll come out the other side a better man. I know it's hard to see right now, but Jimmy, this is an opportunity. That's why I'm doing this, not to punish you.
To show you one of your employees is going to find you curled up in that space blanket, take you to the hospital, hook you up to those machines, and this time it'll be too much, and you will die there alone.
He's not going to be there for you anymore.
Here's my ride.
That's where Chuck doesn't. He's very short-sighted. He doesn't realize you're going to be all alone. You're going to lose your employees cuz you're paying them are only there to help you because they're paid. You're going to lose me, and you're going to die there.
And that hurts him, I think.
Jimmy.
He's not worried about him.
>> [screaming] >> Oh.
I'll see if I can work some magic, but those decisions are really above my pay grade.
>> Oh, yeah? When did they start paying you?
Sit here.
A little healthy banter. Chances are you're spending the night. You uh going to be okay? Beats the back of a nail salon.
Right. Got it. Dominance. You uh do you know how to throw a punch, right? Yeah, all right. Goodbye.
He should be loved by all those guys.
He's the one that defends them.
Mhm.
That's rough. What a start.
>> [music] >> And she has no idea.
Bang. [music] Drums.
It's such a different look of an episode.
Ernie. It doesn't matter. I just Is Jimmy okay? I feel bad like it's my fault. I didn't mean for this to happen.
>> What happened to Jimmy?
Oh.
Let's enter Ms. Wexler as the attorney of record.
>> Your honor, if I may, um I'll be representing myself. I strongly advise against that, Mr. Thank you. Mhm.
Your honor, I'm all set. I'm going to represent myself.
>> Your honor, not your client, Ms. Wexler.
I'm sorry. I'm moving on. You two can work this out on your own time. I'm sorry. I was going to call you, but then I thought I'd So, on to the issue of bond, you have no priors, and She's there to help him, man. She's just trying to help.
And he just continues to dig a hole. I love this guy, but this drives me nuts.
Accept help when it's there for you, just like a 12-step program.
Accept the help that's offered.
Cuz you're going to reject her one too many times, and she's not going to turn back around, and you're going to see the back of her head, and she's never coming back. Given your ties to the community, I see no reason to deny you bond, which I set now at $2,500.
Just waiting for me to lose my [ __ ] and bust in.
>> did. Chuck played me like a fiddle.
Yeah. And schmuck that I am, I fell for it. Mhm. Threatened everything that we're building. I won't allow him to endanger You already have. I will fix this myself. Me, Jimmy McGill. Okay? You have got to let me do this on my own.
>> talking. Thank you.
I um I finished it.
Touched up the edges a little. Is Is that okay?
Oh, uh sure.
It looks nice.
You mind driving me to my car?
Sure. No problem.
This feels like one of those episodes that uh it's not necessarily a filler episode cuz it's spacing from one to the other. They get sent into what happens to whatever happens next, but there's just a lot of watching in this episode.
It's It's It's It's the first time I've seen one that's just like I'm kind of just watching.
Mhm.
>> [snorts] [snorts] [clears throat] >> It looks kind of like that doctor from Breaking Bad that had that Is it doctor for um Was it Gus? Gustavo?
Fring?
Where when they went to Mexico and did that big deal and busted out and uh came back, got shot, Mike got shot.
Gus.
Did he was in that makeshift operating place? Looks like him. Maybe not. Mr. Clark, the doctor's ready. And how may I help [clears throat] you today, Mr. Clark?
I believe our mutual acquaintance called ahead. You told me what, but not how much. Mhm.
Well, [clears throat] Is this him?
What is he getting?
I don't get that.
Mhm.
Two bags of chips, that's my kind of guy.
Love the chips.
He's back at a suit.
Your night in MDC. I caught up with a few old clients.
>> [laughter] >> Happy to have a civil conversation, and I'm always ready to make a deal. Just call me Monty Hall.
So, you're looking to plea out on this then?
>> Let's make a deal. Um, they're pulling in someone from Berlin, something Hay, I think. I don't know. Boss used the words tough but fair.
>> Got a jam.
Throwing it all away? Burger's getting cold.
You want it that Yeah? There's too many trans fats.
>> [sighs] >> Those are the best fats.
He's like hungry.
So, they let you keep the car? What?
Davis and Main. They let you keep the German car? No. That blows.
He just always a dreamer, you know, stuck in that prosecutor's office living off chips and coffee.
There's something about those shoes, I think, over the telephone line.
The what's Is that what he's going to make make a deal? Is that going to leave something here to be uh picked up?
Oh, it's in the shoes.
How's he going to hook them over the wire?
I mean, it takes like a perfect throw.
No way.
There's no way. Like, what are you What are you going to do? Come on, Mike.
Mike, buddy. At least drive your car up there and stand on the roof. Try to get closer.
No way.
Oh my gosh, Mike.
Secondly, how are they going to get it down?
Mr. McGill? Chuck, please. Meet me at the front door.
They said to put my things in the mailbox. Yes, please. Anything with a battery. Oh my gosh.
Doesn't this like tip you off to like something? Did your brother ever have a key to the house?
Oh.
Going Going back to the confrontation so I have it absolutely clear, did he strike you? No, nothing like that.
Well, as I mentioned, he used a fireplace poker to break into my desk.
But, he never would have used it on me.
My brother is a lot of things, but even he has limits. And you're willing to appear as a witness even though he's family.
>> Unfortunately, yes. I'll need your sworn testimony. Gosh, do you want to be put as an attorney at his level with his name on the law firm, you really want to go to a trial with this with your name going after your brother like this? The reputation means I would think Howard would be saying, "No way."
Chuck, this is not happening. This is going to look terrible at the law firm.
It's Jimmy used to be an employee here.
They're going to run you through the wringer.
Potentially, you could be your whole life what you've been dealing with mentally is going to It could all be put out there. Jimmy wouldn't do that. I don't think he would ever do that. But, could be threatened to do that.
They're going to make you look like you're crazy, Chuck. Injured party has ultimately been reluctant to cooperate with my office. That won't happen. I'm curious about your strategy. Now, what's he tell her how she's got to do her job, probably. The bone of contention is going to be the felony breaking and entering. Your brother's going to want to plea down to a misdemeanor, but I'll hold the line on the felony.
>> [clears throat] >> I certainly appreciate you accommodating me today by coming here. But, don't worry. I'm able to tolerate being out for short periods with a few minor adjustments. Nothing that will overly inconvenience the court. I'll get started on this.
You know, Jimmy has a good heart. It's not an excuse for what he's done.
He He's emotionally flies off the handle.
>> I understand, but this is more than flying off the handle.
>> I'm not going to defend his actions. He set him up, though. I can't help wondering if there's not a better solution. To get him to give his license away. Make a deal.
No more law. That's what I think he wants.
He's had his whole agenda this whole time.
And this has such Breaking Bad vibes.
Just the sounds, the visual, the videography.
Crazy.
>> [music] >> There we go.
Los Pollos Hermanos.
Oh, wait. It's the delivery truck.
Same guy.
Two of them now with uh weapons.
>> [music] >> You know what? I wonder if he's going to shoot down the shoes to fall down in front of them or something.
No, maybe not.
Oh, they could just get up on top of that truck and grab it. That'd be easy.
>> [music] >> Oh, it's that spot there.
Mike doesn't kill people, though.
What is happening?
Sprinkled that residue or whatever it was all over the back of that truck.
Wonder what that means.
They're going to get to the border and get busted or something?
Dogs are going to sniff it, smell it, get in the back of that truck?
Looks like we got a hit.
Disrupt the operation.
Gus and Mike working together, I think.
To disrupt that factor.
>> [sighs] >> I guess.
Oh, the rubber band ball.
Used to have one of those.
Remember how they used to stand outside of Hamlin, Hamlin and McGill and smoke? I found it in the glove box. Best guess?
From back when all the doors matched. I got a deal offer from the ADA today.
And? It's not what I expected.
He's offered me pre-prosecution diversion. Seriously? A PPD?
>> [sighs] >> That's great, Jimmy.
Best I could hope for, right? Right.
What's the catch? Give up your um You got to keep your nose clean for a whole year? Keep Victor with a K on lockdown?
It's not a problem, just sell. And if I don't, it's instant jail, right?
Lucky for Like deferred adjudication or something? Jimmy, this is good news.
And Chuck's going to be >> [clears throat] >> Doesn't like to lose, though. Actually, the PPD was Chuck's idea.
[ __ ] What's his game? One condition of the PPD is that my written confession is immediately submitted to the New Mexico Bar Association.
>> Your written felony. Yeah.
>> [clears throat] >> I thought he wanted me in jail. He just wants my law license.
He's going to fight it. I can tell you, he don't like to lose. A confession to a felony? Grounds for disbarment.
>> Yeah, and if I take it to trial and I lose, I face the bar anyways and jail time most likely. He's got me boxed in.
Unless she can win the trial. You can fight this. The disciplinary board listens to extenuating circumstances.
Chuck knows everybody Hell, he made half their careers. It's going to be him and his cronies versus me alone. Well, that's a good point.
Mhm. Not alone.
Kim. Aw.
>> Jimmy, you need me. I know. That's so true.
>> this yourself. You and I both know that, and I'm not going to let you fight this on your own.
Are you sure? That's sweet. I don't Why would you?
>> [sighs] >> Didn't think he's worth it.
Looks sad. Seriously?
So sad he doesn't see it. Call it the fallacy of sunk costs.
So what now?
Love that picture there. Take that PPD and we shove it right up Chuck's ass.
Oh my gosh, I love it.
That was a great ending for an episode that just had a lot of just plain regular. The ending is great because Chuck's thinking, I got him.
He's got to give up his license. And now he's like, and if there's anybody that can win a trial, it's Jimmy McGill. Don't Don't forget it's not over till we just knock him freaking down.
