The landmark India UK free trade agreement officially known as the comprehensive economic and trade agreement or setta comes into force from July 15th. The agreement is expected to boost bilateral trade, expand market access, create employment, and strengthen investment between the world's fifth and sixth largest economies. The government says the pact will help raise India UK bilateral trade from $60 billion to hundred billion by 2030. Here's our report.
>> The India UK comprehensive economic and trade agreement signed in July last year comes into force from July 15th.
Government says the pact reflects the complimentary nature of the two economies rather than direct competition. It believes the agreement will create new opportunities for businesses while strengthening supply chains and expanding market access. From midnight nearly 98% of Indian goods will enter the UK market duty-free.
The 30 chapters across which negotiations have taken place under this agreement extends well beyond conventional tariff liberalization to cover digital trade government procurement and effective government procurement for the first time innovation labor environment and gender.
It addresses both tariff and non-tariff barriers. The biggest gains are expected for labor intensive sectors. Ready garments, textiles, footwear, carpets, leather, processed food, cereals, vegetables, fruits, spices, marine products, meat, engineering goods, gems and jewelry, automobiles, machinery, electronics, and fabricated metal products are expected to receive duty-free or concessional access to the UK market. The agreement is also expected to provide a major boost to India's MSME sector by improving access to one of the world's largest developed markets. The government says this will help increase production, expand exports and generate new employment opportunities.
Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agarwal says the agreement is inclusive offering significant opportunities for farmers, fishermen, workers, women entrepreneurs, startups and msmemes. Indian agricultural products are expected to gain deeper access to the UK's premium food market while seafood exports will receive complete duty exemption. The agreement also includes the double contribution convention or dcc which is expected to benefit India's services sector and skilled workforce. Under the agreement, Indian professionals working in the UK for up to 5 years along with their employers will be exempt from making social security contributions in Britain while continuing to contribute in India. At the same time, India has protected sensitive sectors including dairy, cereals, pulses and several strategic product categories ensuring that domestic producers remain safeguarded while expanding export opportunities. India UK SATA is going to open up huge opportunity for Indian manufacturers and exporters and not only in manufacturing sector but also in services sector and I'd like to say that this is going to democratize the exports and any size of the companies including MSMES will be able to access to the high income market like UK. Industry believes the agreement will improve India's global competitiveness by lowering trade costs, encouraging investment and strengthening economic ties between the two countries. With both nations targeting bilateral trade of hundred billion dollars by 2030, the India UK comprehensive economic and trade agreement is expected to play a key role in advancing the making India initiative strengthening manufacturing, creating jobs and accelerating India's journey towards becoming a developed economy with inputs from AJ Mishra in New Delhi.

Two, can we agree to leverage all the opportunities that this free trade agreement is opening up for both countries because it's going to be the first of the block. Third, we should seriously look at connecting tourism and talent. And by talent, I will look at education and partnerships in mobility with services, huge opportunities.
>> The resident signing of new India free trade agreement is a strong a strong political signal to the world.
It reflects the vision and ambition of our countries to move forward in times of growing protectionism and fragmentation of the value of change where we need to pursue resilience and competitiveness at the global level. The significance of this visit lies not just in the meetings held today but in the partnership that it could forge for the years to come. As India continues to expand its global economic footprint, Madrid becomes another important part in that journey. This is Atman Sandhu in Spain for DD India.

Uh the ongoing protests in the in Pakistan occupied Jammu and Kashmir are a direct consequence of Pakistan's decade long decades long sorry systemic exploitation denial of fundamental rights and administrative operation in areas under its illegal and forcible occupation.
Rather than addressing the legitimate grievances of the local population, the Pakistani state has responded with excessive police brutality including against helpless women and children, blocking essential supplies, including of food and medicine, enforcing internet blackouts, and deploying lethal force against unarmed civilians that has led to tragic fatalities. We expect and hope that the international community will hold Pakistan accountable fully accountable to these egregious abuses and misreads.

And I like that actually because I don't think anybody should be able to charge a fee for the uh for the straight or for any other straight relationship in terms of other sections of the world. I don't think anybody should be really in that position. But we were doing it as a reimbursement. The Gulf States are going to invest a tremendous amount of money into the United States. The landmark India UK free trade agreement officially known as the comprehensive economic and trade agreement or Sitha comes into effect from today that is July 15th. The agreement is expected to boost bilateral trade, expand market access, create employment and strengthen investment between the world's fifth and sixth largest economies. Also, we told you that the government says the pact will help raise India UK bilateral trade from $60 billion to hundred billion by 2030.
AJ Mishra joins us from New Delhi to get us more on this. AJ, help us understand in very simple terms the importance of this FDA. Though we've told our viewers that it will help in increasing the bilateral trade, but to what extent will it further strengthen uh India's position when we talk of global trade on the global page.
>> Thanks for having me on the show. I think it's it's a landmark you know FTA between the fifth and sixth largest economy of the world and it is going it is it is just not a trade deal but it is going to increase the prospects for for Indian exporters to have a greater market in UK number one. Secondly, we have a double uh you know convention DC VCC which is coming into force which means that the that the employees which companies are putting out in UK they had to shell out 23% of their salary for the for the for the national uh social security contribution of UK. uh now when DCC is the double convention this agreement is in place the companies will have to just deposit the PF contribution just in India they will not have to shell out 23% of their salaries in the UK which means that India is going to save $600 million annually just because of this BCC which is a very important part of this comprehensive agreement between India and UK secondly out of 155 services 123 Three service services line are going to be free uh in in UK if if the Indian IT companies all the services company are going to provide their services. So GCC is going to have a big boost. The IT IT professionals the IT companies the financials uh in which we have the greatest strength are going to have a great you know a great time ahead in the UK market. Secondly, it is going to be a an opportunity for Indian exporters to integrate themselves into the global economy via uh via trade with UK. That's very important to understand.
So when it comes to investment, investment is going to increase. We have provided all the protections to the sensitive sectors like agriculture, dairy and msmemes and women led entrepreneurship. So it's a comprehensive deal uh one of one of one of the biggest deal that we have inked with any developed nations and we have so far in nine deals and this this is one of the deals which is effective from from midnight today uh is is going to be a landmark era for the Indian business especially in the UK which is also the gateway to the larger European markets so to say >> yes you're talking of uh this being a greater gateway to the European markets to what extent will it help India strengthen its position you know in the manufacturing and export sector on the global page >> I think when it comes to manufacturing the cheaper imports plays a very important role ro role and that's that's where this FDA comes into course so whether we are importing raw material from UK the chemicals the engineering goods or so to say the components for the for the telephone manufacturing it is going to be cheaper cheaper because we we'll get you know we'll have a lower tariff on UK imports that's very important for for manufacturing but after manufacturing you need markets so the forward linkage and backward linkage both the linkages have been taken care of and I think going forward it is it is going to be a big boost for the manufacturing especially the make in India and uh and and one very special clause treaty is there that the government businesses uh the government will have now the window for UK companies to call to call them to partic into t tendering and vice versa versa the UK government will have the opportunity for Indian companies to you know invite them for participation into their tender so there also we are we are expecting great business in government business MSMES are going to uh to be benefited whether it is textile footwear leather so to say the food processing 97% of the tariff line under the food processing sector is going to be having a nil zero duty in UK so it's a great potential for for exporters for the food processing sector for the marine sector for the for the engineering goods for the chemical goods and when it comes to automo pretty interesting fact is that we have set a kota of 23,000 cars and automobiles from UK so out of 6 million cars that we register every year in India the British cars are going to have a share of only 23% while Indian companies will have a full access to the UK market and and and we are going to have a a great uh you know time for the Indian automobile market. So in in in nutshell it is going to be great for Indian manufacturing it will boost make in India it will boost a baratan and going forward the integration with the UK along with the other European nations. We know that we are going to have a a free trade agreement with Euro zone also it is going to very soon. So we are uh we are working on several such negotiations and not just trade but investment services and mobility included.
>> All right. So that sums up the significance of the India uh UK FTA.
Thank you so much AJ for joining in with those inputs.
The services sector accounts for the largest share of India's economy and is linked to the livelihood of millions. To track the performance of these sectors, the government has for the first time released monthly index of services production. Now the step marks an important milestone in strengthening India's statistical system and also improving the measurement of the services sector sector is the biggest contributor to the country's economic activity. Now the government will provide a monthly snapshot of how this sector is performing through the newly launched index of services production or ISB. As part of the country's suit of macroeconomic indicators, the ministry of statistics and program implementation through the national statistics office has started releasing ISPs for 19 service subsectors with 202425 as the base year. The first set of indices has been released for April 2026.
The release of these subsectoral ISPs provides for the first time a monthly measure of short-term movements in India's formal services sector covering nearly 60% of the sector. The trial series is based on the national industrial classification 2025 and covers only formal sector enterprises using GST and administrative data.
monthly measure of services is therefore a real achievement and uh therefore the colleagues in ministry of statistics and program implementation deserve a special round of applause for for making this happen. Uh what has made it possible is something that was never designed for statistician at all. Every month lacks of enterprises file returns on their sales under the goods and services tax.
Those returns aggregated and classified and adjusted for prices can tell us how much the formal services economy actually produced.
>> According to the April 2026 data, 14 out of the 19 service subsectors recorded doubledigit growth compared to April 2025. While nearly all categories posted positive growth, the strongest performer was accommodation and food services which grew by 37.2%. 2%. This was followed by retail trade at 30.8%, administrative and support services at 28.7% and real estate at 27.7%.
Other major sectors also registered healthy growth including telecommunications at 22.8%, road transport at 18.5%, insurance at 15.6%, IT and computer related services at 15.2%, 2% and banking at 12.2%.
Air transport recorded a decline of 13.9%.
Overall, the broad-based growth across most service sectors indicates that economic activity in India's services economy remains strong.
We realize that if we take a differentiated approach then it is possible to come out with a working ice.
So we looked at uh some sectors where GSP GST works. Then we looked at some sectors where the administrative data source is very strong. So we were very clear that we will have a differentiated approach and we'll create a trial index and we'll also were very clear that sectors which where we are not getting adequate data coverage today we will exclude we'll have a phased approach and we'll bring them in as the data collection the data systems improve. The current release is a trial series. The ministry will release the ISP on the 29th of every month, providing regular insights into the performance of the formal services sector. The ISP is compiled using a combination of administrative data for sectors such as air transport, railways, banking and insurance. GST data for sectors including wholesale and retail trade, hotels and restaurants, telecommunications, IT, real estate and professional services. While the annual survey of incorporated services sector enterprises provides the weights for the indices. As more service sectors are brought under its coverage in due course of time, the government plans to release a composite index of services production. The new index will help policymakers formulate better policies, enable businesses to track economic trends and provide a timely assessment of the direction of India's economy.

In India's northeast, the second wave of floods in Assam has affected six districts in the state. 37,032 people are in 99 villages villages under 12 revenue circles and they're reeling under the impact of floods. Lakimur remains the worst hit district followed by Sonitur. Rescue teams including the SDRF carried out evacuation operations.
The flood has claimed one life in Sonetur district while over 16,000 livestock have also been affected.
Damage to infrastructure has been reported including roads and embankment breach in Sonitur and public utility facilities in several districts.
Meanwhile, the central water commission has reported that no river in Assam is currently flowing above the danger level, indicating a gradual improve improvement in overall flood situation.
However, localized water logging continues in several parts.
Our correspondent Sabina Roy joins us from Dugar. Subina, we told our viewers how Asam is grappling with a third wave of the floods. Tell us the current situation.
Yeah, a very good morning Prii. Uh the second wave of floods has hit northeast to say because it has also hit Arunachal Pradesh and other parts of northeastern states including Assam. Uh so over the last few days the northeast have been experiencing very heavy to heavy rainfalls due to which uh landslides and then uh flash floods have you know created devastation across Arunachal Pradesh and Assam. Now to talk about Asam PRI over the last few days. It has affected uh around six districts to which the most affected this time is Lakimur then followed by Dhimi then Jirugar then we have Jorhad Sonichur and Tiptagar. So these are the six districts which are majorly affected. Lakimur district is the worst affected. If we talk about the overall population over 35,000 people have been affected by these second wave of floods this time treaty and then uh if we talk about the rescue efforts yesterday two boats were deployed by the SDRF and NDRF and they had rescued around 13 people and three medical teams were deployed in Lakimur and Sonit and Sonitur. Now talking about uh the uh uh animals you know more than 16,000 animals have been affected PRI and this time PRI Limitur is the worst hit like many of the villages have inandated you know because of the increase in the water level in Sububansi due to also release of water by the Subansuri hydroelectric project and also due to the torrential rains the water level has increased in Sububans due to which many of the villages you know like Dunaseti area and other villages in Lakimur remain inundated. So uh so that is the situation out here in Assam. Now if you go to Arunachal Pradesh Siti this time it's the worst hit and yesterday Rajy Sabha MP of >> so both Assam and Arunachal Pradesh are reeling under the impact of floods.
Thank you so much Sabina for joining in with those updates.

>> Welcome back after the break. You're watching D India Newsar and now we turn a focus to sports. Spain is through to the FIFA World Cup final after ending France's title hopes with a composed semi-final victory setting up a showdown with either England or defending champions Argentina. Spain defeated France 2-0il in Arlington, Texas to reach their first World Cup final since lifting the trophy in 2010. Mikuel Zabal opened the scoring from the penalty spot before Peru Porro sealed victory with a superb second half finish. The win extended Spain's unbeaten run to 37 matches while Lar Roa also became the first team in the world in the World Cup history in fact to keep six clean sheets in a single edition. Spain will now face either England or Argentina in Sunday's final.
Spanish fans erupted in celebration after the final whistle while French supporters were left disappointed. Our correspondent Amish Mahajan spoke to the fans outside the stadium after the match. Just let's let's listen in.
>> What a great game it was. Spain winning two-0, beating France and entering the finals of the FIFA World Cup. And we have some Spanish fans with us >> who are celebrating the victory of the team. What do you want to say? What a great game IT WAS.
>> I JUST WANT TO SAY VIVA ASPA CAME OUT FOR A GOOD REASON.
>> It was a really good game. BA Espña France couldn't do anything >> and BALA.
>> No, I think we're definitely happy. It's not a result we expected. Uh but I think the tactical uh approach that Spain took, you know, and Bbape was nowhere near dangerous today. I think Spain did an excellent job just maintaining composure. And you know, Lame didn't get that third goal, so that just means Lamine has two goals to score in the final. And I think Spain takes it all the way.
>> Absolutely. Lamin, if he had scored that third goal, I mean he in fact scored that third goal if it was not if was not if was caught offside. But again, great game by Spain.
>> That would have been so cool if that had been a third goal, but I mean two was enough, right? Two was enough and France ended up being not dominant enough to beat them. So yeah.
>> What do you think went wrong for France?
I mean they were dominating in the entire tournament. What do you think went wrong for them in this match? You know, I think France was used to the teams that were attacking them uh carelessly and I think Spain, like I said, they were very well composed in the back and you know, maintaining possession of the game always makes a difference regardless of what people say. And I think when you don't have the ball, you can't do anything. And Spain took care of the ball today.
>> Absolutely. And how do you want to cheer your team for the finals? I think one WAY >> absolutely Dembele really looked off color and what a great game it was. France knocked out of the tournament and Spain making it to the finals. They had won in 2010. Will they be able to do it again? It will be seen on 19th July. The next game, the second semi-final will be played between Argentina and England. And whoever win that match will play Spain in the finals with cameraman Shoubam Sharma. This is Abishek Mahajan in Arlington, Texas for DD India.
>> All right DD India's Abishek Mahan joins us from Dallas, Texas for more. Um, hi Abishek. When we talk of the match then Spain did put forth a splendid performance, a splendid victory but for France did France see this coming?
>> Uh, absolutely not.
Prii I think I mean it's not that France didn't have quality they were doing well in the entire tournament didn't concede a goal in the knockouts we were discussing about how favorites was France and how ruthless they have been in the entire tournament but like I said they didn't lack quality Spain I think won the tactical battle I think they did their homework well they were more prepared had they in fact neutralized the attack the trio of France Dembele Oise and Kiran Mbappe it's not that Mbappe didn't get his chances he did get his chances but Spain's defense was too good in fact midfield also if you talk about Dre Danny Almo all of them did well and yes Spain now are the favorites to win the title also it will be interesting to who make it to the finals in semi-final 2. It will be between Argentina and England on 15th July here local time.
But again, it will be interesting to see who plays Spain in the finals. But yes, like I said, Spain won the tactical battle and that's how they have been performing. They performed in the last two face off against France also. I mean UFA Nations League like we were talking about they defeated France in the seminals of the UFA Nations League. They defeated France in the seven France of the Euro also and 2010 was the year when Spain had won the World Cup last time and now after 16 years they have a very good chance to repeat that feat and yes the way they performed against France 200 nobody expected that scoring and nobody expected France to be of color.
All right, Abishek, we leave it here.
Let's hope the best team wins, but uh uh you know through to through that it will be a treat for the fans to watch the players. Thank you so much for joining in with those updates. And India made a winning start to the one day international series against England producing a dominant all round performance at Edbaston after suffering a T20 series whitewash. India defeated England by six wickets in the first ODI to take a 1-0il lead in the third match series in the three match series.
Captain Schubman Gil top scored with 80 before retiring hurt with cramp while Axa Patel starred with an allrounder display claiming four wickets for 44 runs and scoring 57. Washington Sundar's unbeaten 52 guided India to 262 for four in 45.2 overs comfortably chasing England's total of 258 despite Joe Ruth's unbeaten 76 and Liam Dawson's career best 68.
Los Angeles organizers on Tuesday launched volunteer applications for the 2028 Olympic and Parolympic Games, marking two years until the opening ceremony as the city builds momentum from its recent turn hosting FIFA World Cup matches. At a volunteer event at Griffith Park, LA28 officials formally opened applications for what organizers said will be one of the largest volunteer programs in the US sporting history with the Olympics returning to Los Angeles for the first time since 1984. LA28 chief executive officer Reynold Hoover said that the World Cup for which Los Angeles hosted eight matches showed him the power of sport to unite the world. While former American track and field Olympian Carl Lewis said volunteers help define the experience for athletes and fans alike. Thousands of volunteers are expected to support operations across competition venues and host sites during the Olympic and Parolympic games serving in roles including guest services, transportation assistance and event sport.
