It belongs to the mint family. The same enormous family that gives us basil, oregano, sage, lavender and lemon balm.
A family that across the entire plant kingdom is famous for producing intensely aromatic oils. Catnip is native to parts of Europe and Asia, but it has spread and naturalized across nearly every temperate region on Earth, including most of North America, where it now grows wild along roadsides, fence lines, disturbed soil near barns, and the edges of overgrown gardens. It is a tough square stemmed perennial with soft grayish green heart-shaped leaves covered in a fine layer of tiny hairs and it produces small white or pale lavender flowers clustered along its upper stems through the summer months.
If you have ever seen a slightly scruffy, silvery green plant growing somewhere nobody planted it on purpose, there is a real chance you have walked past catnip without recognizing it at all. Long before this plant became associated almost exclusively with house cats. It had an entirely different reputation, one rooted in human medicine, human food, and human daily life. The genus name Nepeta is believed to trace back to Nepete, an ancient town in Italy where the plant reportedly grew in such abundance that it became associated with the region itself. Roman writers documented its use as a culinary herb, added to sauces and dishes for its slightly minty, slightly peppery flavor, and Roman and Greek physicians recorded using it medically for digestive complaints, colds, and fevers. This was not a marginal, obscure plant known to a handful of herbalists. It was a common everyday plant integrated into the daily life of entire civilizations. Valued specifically because it worked long before anyone understood the chemistry behind why. As history moved forward, catnip's medicinal reputation only grew.

This was a plant that earned its place in the garden through direct repeated practical usefulness, not through decoration or fashion. And then at some point along the way something shifted. And to understand why, we first need to properly understand what actually happens when a cat encounters this plant. Because the popular image of catnip has almost completely eclipsed everything else this plant is capable of. The reaction cats display around catnip comes from a specific compound found concentrated in the plant's leaves and stems called nepetylactone. This compound is released when the leaf structure is damaged, whether that is through crushing, chewing, or simply brushing against the plant. And it is detected by cats through a specialized sensory organ located in the roof of the mouth called the vomoasal organ, the same organ responsible for detecting pherommones. When a cat detects nepidilactone, it triggers a temporary harmless euphoric response causing the rolling, rubbing, vocalizing behavior most people find so entertaining to watch. This response is genetic, meaning not every cat experiences it, with research suggesting a meaningful portion of the domestic cat population lacks the specific gene required to respond to the compound at all. Fascinatingly, this same sensitivity has been documented across several wild cat species as well, including lions and tigers observed responding to catnip in controlled zoo settings, suggesting this reaction runs deep through feline biology generally, not just domesticated house cats. This single delightful viral worthy behavior became so strongly associated with the plant that its entire common name in English revolves entirely around it.
Catnip, not stomach soother, not sleep herb, not calming tea plant, catnip. And once a plant's entire cultural identity narrows down to a single novelty behavior, something predictable tends to happen. Everything else that plant is capable of quietly falls out of public memory, crowded out by the one story everyone already knows and enjoys repeating. This is precisely what happened here. And it is a genuine shame because the same compound responsible for that famous feline reaction, nepidolactone, turns out to have a completely separate and remarkably well doumented property that has almost nothing to do with cats at all.
Nepidilactone is a powerful insect deterrent. And this is not folklore or internet speculation. This has been directly studied in controlled laboratory research. One of the most frequently cited studies on this topic conducted by researchers at Iowa State University and published in the early 2000s tested nepatilactone directly against DET, the chemical compound developed by the United States military decades earlier and still considered the most reliable, most extensively studied mosquito repellent available today. In that controlled laboratory testing, nepidilactone demonstrated repellent effects against mosquitoes that were in certain concentrations and certain testing conditions more effective than de at deterring mosquito landing and biting behavior. This result was significant enough that it was picked up by major science and news outlets at the time, generating genuine excitement about catnip oil as a potential natural alternative to chemical repellents. It is important to be precise and honest here. In the same way, any careful look at plant science needs to be honest.
This does not mean catnip oil has fully replaced DE as the recommended standard for serious mosquito protection in real world conditions particularly in situations involving genuine risk of mosquito-born disease such as malaria or deni where deets decades of consistent repeated realworld field testing across different climates and mosquito species still make it the more reliable thoroughly proven choice for serious protection laboratory results especially Early ones do not always translate perfectly into consistent real world performance across every condition. And further research since that original study has produced a range of results with some follow-up studies confirming strong repellent activity and others finding more modest effects depending on concentration, application method, and mosquito species being tested. Science on natural repellent continues to develop and the honest answer is that nepidilactone shows genuine laboratory documented statistically measurable repellent activity. in some tests outperforming DE without yet reaching the same universally proven status that decades of DE testing has established.
But even with that honest caveat, sit with what we do actually know for a moment. A common backyard plant, one most people only associate with house cat entertainment, contains a compound formally studied by university researchers and found in controlled testing to rival or exceed the performance of the most trusted synthetic mosquito repellent ever developed. That is a remarkable finding for a plant most people would not think twice about pulling out of a garden bed.
So why does almost nobody grow catnip specifically for this reason today? The answer traces back to the same pattern we keep finding whenever we look closely at overlooked plants. And it comes down to a mixture of cultural narrowing, commercial incentive, and simple forgetting. Once a plant's popular identity becomes fixed around one single charming, easily marketable behavior, in this case, the cat reaction, that identity tends to completely take over how the plant is sold, grown, and thought about. Walk into nearly any pet store and you will find catnips sold in small pouches sprayed onto scratching posts or stuffed into cat toys marketed entirely around feline entertainment. It is a genuinely profitable, simple, easy to understand product. Meanwhile, the far more complex, more nuanced, scientifically interesting story about its insect repelling properties requires actual explanation, actual context, and does not fit neatly onto a colorful pouch on a store shelf. Simple, charming stories spread. Complicated, nuanced, scientifically accurate stories tend to get left behind not because they are less true, but because they are harder to sell in 5 seconds at a checkout counter. At the same time, the rise of synthetic chemical repellents through the middle of the 20th century meant that fewer households needed to rely on garden grown remedies for anything, mosquitoes included. Once a spray bottle with a guaranteed standardized percentage of active ingredient became available at every pharmacy and grocery store, there was very little cultural incentive to remember that a common backyard herb might offer something similar for free. Just like so many other plants whose practical value quietly disappeared once a manufactured purchasable alternative became available, Catnip's insect repelling reputation faded almost entirely from public memory, surviving mostly in scattered gardening forums and old herbal texts rather than common household knowledge. Let us also talk about why catnip is so remarkably difficult to eliminate once it establishes itself somewhere. Because this plant is built for persistence in a way that mirrors much of the rest of the mint family, catnip spreads through two separate highly effective strategies working at the same time. First, it is a vigorous self-seeder, producing abundant small seeds late in the season that scatter easily and germinate readily the following spring, often appearing in new locations well away from the original plant. Second, like many of its mint family relatives, catnip develops a tough spreading root system capable of sending up new shoots from root fragments left behind in the soil, meaning an incomplete pulling or tilling effort often leaves behind exactly the material needed for the plant to return within weeks. It needs no fertilizer, no special care, and no protection from pests since its own chemical defenses handle that problem on its own.
