classic BEBOP line meets CHARLIE ALLEN groove

[00:00:00]Hey, dear friends. Welcome back to the Church Guitar Coffee Club. Today, we're going to have a look at a very cool bebop line.

[00:00:09]And we're going to use this line on two chords.

[00:00:14]>> [music] >> Very closely to Charlie Christian's "Baby Don't Cry for Me." And I'm inspired by Charlie Christian playing such cool bebop lines over funky chords.

[00:00:30]And that's something that I want to explore for sure. And so, now I recorded that on my loop, I'm going to lay some layer some [music] really nice chords on top of it and just like this.

[00:00:44]>> [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] >> Yeah, and then I just use one position of the minor pentatonic. You can see I'm shifting it back [music] and forth. If you're more advanced, of course, you can use all the patterns of on all the fretboard and >> [music] >> not uh do it like this. But I think sometimes that's nice. So, it's a classic line of a 2-5-1 in C major.

[00:01:33]>> [music] >> And it goes like this.

[00:01:39]>> [laughter] >> So, it's like really an F major triad on the D [music] minor 7, right? It's an upper structure.

[00:01:45]A patio starting on the major 7 >> [music] >> ending on the major 7. And then, this is what I love about this line.

[00:01:55]So, if you just look about on on this part, it's ending on the nine.

[00:02:00]>> [music] >> So, maybe you can think and see this chord.

[00:02:05]>> [music] >> Right? Or if you play it an octave higher, >> [music] >> right? And this, of course, fits in perfectly into our two chords. So, we can play >> [music] >> on the E minor and already have a little bit more of a jazz sound. So, I'm going to demonstrate it in both octaves.

[00:02:37]>> [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] >> Yeah. So, this sounds really cool and it's very much inside. And now we have this little thing, if we're going back to the 2-5-1 in C major, >> [music] >> which is an augmented triad.

[00:03:15]And then we have >> [music] >> ending on the C major.

[00:03:20]And what we're going to do, which is kind of a little interesting, is we're going just to play a 2-5-1 lick over the two.

[00:03:29]So, the E minor 7 >> [music] >> is our chord and we're going to to play it.

[00:03:39]Right? So, that's what the jazz people do. They play lines that are very logical in itself like this one, but they put it in different places. And then on the D minor, >> [music] >> and it sounds very different. So, first of all, I just want to demonstrate [music] how that would work on those two chords.

[00:04:01]And then I want to go a little bit deeper.

[00:04:06]>> [music] [music] [music] >> So, if it [music] feels strange in the beginning, that's what is just happening to me to like, you know, copy and paste a thing [music] like this.

[00:04:34]That's really normal. We have to get used to the sound. You can only take a very small [music] snippet and play that over the chord.

[00:04:45]Um and then when you >> [music] >> start hearing it better after a while, you'll get new ideas from the lick like I did right now. So, if you're a beginning jazz guitar player, I would highly advertise advertise for just practicing some funky rhythms. That's a really cool thing to do and just getting a scale on each chord. That's a very good workout. And if you're more advanced, you could just like, you know, yeah, sort of try to improvise those lines, this new line, play this line through the cycle of fifths. Best exercise ever.

[00:05:25]And maybe just for a start, take one chord, play this line over it and try to continue improvising when the line ends.

[00:05:35]Or try starting improvising into the line.
