Indiana cracks down on migrant truck drivers #shorts

[00:00:00]The state of Indiana says that nearly 300 illegal migrants with commercial driver's licenses were stopped and prosecuted in the Hoosier state in just the past 3 months. According to a top aid of Governor Mike Braun, the 283 undocumented drivers were nabbed at truck weigh stations in the state.

[00:00:14]That's an average of three per day. Now, the aid didn't specify what laws had been broken to prompt these arrests in the first place. States like California and New York, where many of the drivers were licensed, do issue commercial driver's licenses regardless of citizenship status. While federal regulation requires commercial driver's license holders to be authorized to work in the US, a valid license that's issued by a state that doesn't require citizenship may not prohibit these illegal migrants from operating a vehicle. It's a little confusing. Now, for what it's worth, New York announced it did stop doing this back in February after the Trump administration tightened the rules. Moving forward in Indiana, it's unclear whether the undocumented drivers are being prosecuted on any state or federal charges or whether or not they've been handed over to immigration and customs enforcement. At least some of these cases are bound to be challenged in court. Like I said, the laws are confusing and can be contradictory, but Indiana's Republican governor says that he remains committed to traffic safety of all stripes, including a crackdown on illegal migrant drivers.
