The Government of Ghana strongly protested Canada's decision to deny Thomas Partey, a Ghanaian footballer and key member of the Black Stars national team, a temporary residence visa for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, arguing that pending criminal charges should not be treated as convictions and that this decision violated the fundamental legal principle of presumption of innocence; Ghana has engaged in diplomatic efforts through its Foreign Affairs Ministry to seek a review of this decision before the match against Panama.

The government of Ghana through the foreign affairs ministry has written to Global Affairs Canada to create an avenue for a review of the decision before the Black Stars match on Wednesday.
>> But as you know His Excellency John Dramani Mahama has promised if you touch a Ghanaian anywhere, you've touched all of us and it is this principle that his minister for foreign affairs have carried and held high and all one way or the other.
So, we have not left this matter lying low.
>> Right.
>> The Minister of Foreign Affairs have taken steps and communicated to his counterparts and therefore by extension the government of Canada >> Right.
>> about our displeasure about this behavior and think that they must use legitimate authorities and diplomatic channels and all other uh routes to re-engage on this matter and give room, review, and give room for appeal so that Thomas could join his colleagues to partake in an international assignment that we have all agreed to be part of.
>> I see. So, this official position of Ghana regarding what has just happened to Thomas Partey, has it been officially communicated to the Canadian authorities? I mean, the foreign foreign affairs ministry? Uh have they done that?

This is because Thomas in the country the zone within which he was even accused is walking free, enjoying his rights as any other person because he has only been charged.
So, I don't understand why today Canada is interpreting their rules to suggest that a charge means guilty.
They're supposed to be a country that should hold high the ethos of democracy and rule of law.
And are supposed to be championing rights of many persons, including rights that some of us don't want to even talk about here.
And you think that the mere fact that somebody is being charged is enough to bar the person from partaking in an event you've accepted to host, an event that is supposed to unify us, an event that is supposed to promote peace.
>> Did they Did they say >> that is supposed to promote fellow feeling.
