This video documents a family's first Tesla road trip, revealing key insights about electric vehicle travel: (1) Charging to 100% before long trips is unnecessary and inefficient; charging to 80% is sufficient for most travel needs, (2) Tesla's Full Self-Driving system may prioritize avoiding roadkill over maintaining the vehicle's trajectory, even when the car could safely drive over it, (3) Supercharger charging speeds vary significantly between stalls (27kW vs 122kW), and (4) Preconditioning the battery for fast charging begins approximately 20 minutes before arrival at the charging station.

FIRST TESLA ROAD TRIP TAKES UNEXPECTED TURN..... (FSD, This is NOT What We Expected)追加:
This is our very first official road trip, 430 something miles. And I've been using Grock. I've been using the Tesla app. I even use a website, I think, called a better route.com and uh to to map this out. And I'm I'm learning about scheduling. I'm learning about preconditioning. I'm learning about climate. All these things. being a big star.
All right, I'm not going to lie. I have no idea what I'm really doing, but I am testing some things out as we are about to make a road trip. And what I'm testing out right now is I've used the app to set the time at which the charging will stop.
4:30 a.m. And we are actually charging to 100%.
We are charging here at home.
The charger's over there. And we don't need to charge to 100%, but I want to charge to 100%.
because I really want to make it to Prattville, Alabama to charge at a specific charging station and I don't want to risk it. So, I set the charge to start at midnight basically. I don't really know if this is the right way to do it or not. I set the charging limit to 100%. And this is the current situation where we're at right now. We're at 72% and I'm really curious to see what happens uh over the next couple hours because it it should only take two hours I think is what it said on the app to complete this charge. But my goal is for the charge to actually complete closer to 430 so we're not sitting at 100% for an extended duration unnecessarily.
And so the goal here is to have enough plenty of battery to make it to Prattville to charge at a fourth gen charger I believe and then from there make it to leads Alabama to hit up BIES before making our way to Nashville. And we also prepared ourselves just in case.
We got another tire inflator. I mentioned that earlier, maybe on this channel, maybe on a different one. We got some tire patch kit plugs. We got slime if we need it. You know, hopefully we don't. And the, you know, this is a little bit of a document documentary of how this road trip goes. Taking the car, taking the Tesla instead of taking the Expedition, 100% electric EV, primarily full self-driving, which the recommendation was chill or standard. I think chill or standard was the recommendation for maximum efficiency.
you lose efficiency on the highway apparently high speeds but overall we could make this on 80% but there are certain charging locations I want to hit and there are certain things that I want to test and learn and understand how to set this up preconditioning apparently as long as you set the navigation to direct you and route you to a Tesla supercharger should manage the preconditioning on its own I don't know any other way to do it there's no precondition button just start. So there's that. Additionally, we or at least I had the presence of mind forward thinking here of when we get to where we're going, valet is pretty much the only option. And so I've learned how to access the valet mode as far as it is concerned when it comes to the profile, the driver profile. But also, I've taken our Tesla key and drilled a hole in it just to make sure that the valet could put their tag on it. I don't know how valet handle that. And so I did that and I tested it. The card works fine. And I actually recorded it in a way in which I can make a short from it. And hopefully the short will get a lot of views and pull a lot of people into the channel.
But um this is where we are folks. This is the night before. We're going to try to leave here in the morning at like 4:00 a.m. Get on the road, have some, you know, before dawn FSD driving, enjoyable driving, try to beat the Memorial Day weekend traffic, get to our destination, have a lot of fun. The the kid wants to go to a shopping mall, so we're going to hit up a shopping mall.
We don't have any by us. And uh then we're going to hang out Friday night.
And then Saturday night, we've got dinner with Keith D, the inner operator, one half of memes and markets. And uh I think that, you know, Saturday for the most part there's nothing planned.
Probably hit Broadway for sure. And maybe Friday night probably hit Broadway also. And we're staying pretty close staying JW Marriott. So it's not far.
And but then Sunday we just wake up and come back. my plan. I'll have to reconsider mapping out the plan for the return, but I don't I mean, granted, we're going to arrive probably somewhere around 10%.
But depending on what things are like when we get to where we're going, I'll like refresh my my thought process and probably hit a supercharger so that once we get in town, we are sitting closer to 80%.
Yeah. and you know kind of treating it as if we were at home and we would top off for the night and then that way when we depart on Sunday to return we're departing at or near 80% versus lower like the 10% or single digit range. So yeah, that's my thought process. We'll see how this goes over the course of the next few hours and days and uh see where this video ends up.
All right. So, I might have got a little overzealous with my charging. I I backed down off 100% and it only charged at 95 and we've been We ain't been driving that long, but we're already at 84.
>> I was about to say it's already used 11%. That's crazy.
>> Yeah, it used a lot. Granted, we're going to get where we need to go to charge in Prattville at 45% currently is what it's projecting.
And yeah, I I think we probably would have been good with charging the 80 and getting there at like, you know, 30%, maybe 25% maybe, but I didn't want to really want to push it, but I also wanted to see what would happen. And so what happened is my charging schedule did not really work out as planned because it was done charging at like 10 o'clock instead of I wanted it to be done at 4:30 in the morning. So I backed down to 95% so it would just sit at 95 overnight. It preconditioned and it said that the cabin temperature and everything was set but when we got in it was like freezing balls instead of like I had it like 72 or something. So, I probably did all that wrong. And uh yeah, now we're just kind of cruising here. We're kind of cruising. And also, we're trying to figure out if we tap the speed limit sign, does it automatically change the speed?
And I have to say no.
I have to say the answer is no.
It'd be nice to have greater control over the speed profiles and the target speed limit or percentage or mile per hour over the speed limit, but maybe 14.3 uh I don't know what the next one is.
>> I think I think everybody's on 14.3 now. So maybe 14.3.4 or five or six. All right.
We're getting closer to our destination.
Our first stop being the uh superchargers in Prattville, Alabama.
And uh we got a few recordings. The first one was hysterical because it was of a literal chicken crossing the road.
And uh heartbreak wasn't regen heartbre. But then we also discovered that roadkill causes FSD to want to dodge and avoid it. Now, we've experienced this before, and I'm like, why not just drive over it? Cuz the car can clearly clear it.
The clearance level is is there. Like, it's not an issue. Maybe it's like an extreme self-preservation to avoid hitting the batteries underneath. Maybe.
But in both instances that we recorded, and maybe they'll show up well enough so you guys can see the we didn't really dodge it. We We actually just like hit it with our tires. And so that kind of blows.
In order to actually dodge it, we would have had to go off road for which the car decided not to do that. And uh human drivers would have just drove over it or more likely went to the left and crossed the the yellow to avoid it that way. But uh Tesla's FSD decided that our tires are of not of no value and decided to drive over it directly. Carcasses. All right.
So this is our first experience with preconditioning and we are 19 minutes out from our supercharger destination. So preconditioning starts around 20 minutes.
It just says we're preconditioning for fast charging. So we'll see how this goes.
All right. I will say that we are now on the interstate and uh things are going well for a Memorial Day weekend, but it's still early and uh we just got on the interstate. We'll see what it's like when we get through Alabama and get up to Tennessee.
The preconditioning is already done, I guess, and we got less than a mile to go before we hit our supercharger, >> which the Tesla supercharger is less busy than usual. less busy than usual.
What we need or actually what you want is a restroom.
>> Mhm.
>> And food.
>> Mhm.
>> Which if we find food, you find a restroom.
>> True.
>> But we did kind of point out that a drawback to to supercharging is no gas stations for which if you really wanted to clean a windshield, that's where you would typically go clean a windshield would be a gas station. So, there's that. What's a Tesla destination charger?
>> I don't know. Click on it.
>> Electric vehicle charging station is all it says.
>> I have no idea what that is.
>> Never seen that before.
>> So, this one here says nine of 12 available on arrival.
>> Oh, there's a raceway over here. I can still go pee.
>> Where's the raceway?
>> It says 3 this way.
>> Okay.
It's probably across from the Target.
>> Oh, there's the raceway.
>> Oh, on the left. Okay.
>> Can you reroute us to the raceway first?
My wife needs to go pee pee.
>> I don't think I'm supposed to laugh.
>> Which raceway? The one on Cobbs Ford Road here in Prattville is open 24/7 and just 0.1 miles away.
>> Yes, that one.
>> Or there's Montgomery Speedway about 8 miles out. Let me know so I can reroute >> this one on Cobb.
Rerouted to Raceway on Cobbs Ford Road in Prattville. It's just 0.4 miles away, 2 minutes. Perfect stop for a quick break.
>> Let's see if it does a UI.
This isn't a UI intersection, so probably not. I wish it would just gangster rip it right here.
See, I would have gone skirt skirt.
Oh, there's target.
If only Jim and Nick's barbecue did breakfast, cuz I would eat some of those little cornbread thingyamajiggies.
Murder those things.
This is very convenient. I picked the right gas station.
>> And you took your head wrap off so you won't look so gnarly going inside.
>> I don't think gnarly was the right word.
I think um >> ethnic >> ethnic wannabe was it park it a park it a pump Tesla just to confuse people.
>> That would be hilarious.
>> That would be hilarious. It's going to pull into >> You should have took that one. You should have took that one. Why would it pull into the one where she's get Tesla?
Makes murder choices.
Buggy, you got to pee. Got to go. Bye.
Bye. Imagine.
>> It's the middle finger shrub.
>> [ __ ] you, dude.
>> Oh, you drive a Tesla. Shut the [ __ ] up.
>> Tarsley.
>> Did you see that girl?
>> Which one?
the blonde girl on X.
>> I'll send it to you. Okay.
>> Oh my god, you have a Tesla. Oh my god, you must have overpaid. Oh my god, look how the bumps on her ride. It's such a bumpy ride. You get car sick. Oh my god, Elon Mus.
My car drives itself.
Shut up.
So these these these are like fourth gen or the latest Chargers I think just based on the design of them.
>> So they should be the fastest >> fake ass Mustang.
>> Sorry, I'm a hater.
>> I don't know why these are sideways >> chargers like >> maybe for the um Cyber Trucks. So you have >> Cyber Trucks.
>> I don't know why they're sideways.
Which ones are the sideways ones? This one or those?
>> Cuz these are sideways. Those are straight.
>> Would they not like this in Panama City?
>> Bro, I just took my seat belt off.
Chill.
>> I guess it doesn't work. You got to put it in park.
>> It should have parked faster.
I was literally like a half a second off. Anyway, let's go charge.
This joker is a beast.
Open up.
Let me insert my charger in your port.
We go green. We've gone green.
All right. Let's see what the numbers say.
>> That was my button, not my shoe. Hold >> on to me. Gold.
>> All right. So, we are >> This isn't It says hour 15 or hour five.
That doesn't make any sense.
>> To get to 80%. Supposed to be a supercharger, right?
>> Okay. So, this See, that's the total energy. What does that mean? Feel only applies when supercharger is full or close to full.
Congestion fee. Huh. Oh. Oh. So, they're saying if you leave your car here and it's busy and you've already hit 80% and it sits here, they're going to charge you 50 cents a minute for as long as you sit here because you're holding up the space for somebody else.
It's interesting.
>> I thought these were the new chargers.
Maybe those two flat ones are the new chargers and not these sideways ones.
>> Maybe that's why there's only two of them. All right. What we're going to do is we're going to go ahead and stop charging and we're going to switch stalls because 27 kilowatts and you know sitting here for if I can get this out.
Yeah, that's 27 27 kW was crazy crazy slow.
>> Even Grock said it was twice as long or three times longer than it should be.
>> So, we are going to switch stalls to the one next to her. See if that helps.
I feel like these are newer possibly.
See if these are faster possibly.
for you guys.
20 minutes.
Look at that. That is running.
Okay, we went from an hour to 20 minutes. See? Yeah, that was weird. So, I guess that one bay is jacked.
Okay, so we pulled in and we parked at the little sideways Tesla chargers, right? And once he plugged it in, it said it was going to take an hour and 5 minutes to take us from 45% up to 80%.
And although I do not know a ton about Teslas, I know that that's some [ __ ] So we asked Grock, started asking, he started asking Grock questions. We're going through the whole screen trying to figure things out. And finally, I was like, "Hey, uh, Grock, should it take how long should it take to charge 35%." And Grock said, "Well, at the charger you're at, it'll take 65 to 75 minutes." And I was like, "Cool."
Now, the question is, "Is that normal?"
And Grock said, "No, it should normally take 15 to 20 minutes." And that's why I was like, "We should move stalls." So, I was thinking, >> it mentioned congestion, but there's only three people.
>> Yeah, it mentioned congestion, but there should like literally it's a oasis over here. There's nothing. So, I was like, "Okay, well, there's two flat ones back here, so maybe those are going to be faster." Cuz the lady next to us, y'all see that? She bypassed all those over there and went straight to this one. So, I wonder if she lives here and knows that those suck and these are the two newer ones possibly that charge faster.
But the second we moved over here and plugged in 20 minutes. So, obviously something jank is going on with the other ones. And now we know that if they're flat, maybe go that way. If they're this way, maybe a blade. That's what I'm going with. What you got?
>> We went from 27 kilowatts to 122 now.
So, massive difference. Now we're at 15 minutes. So, we went from 20 minutes to 15 minutes in less than 5 minutes.
>> And we're only at $152 spent so far, just FYI. Also, >> all right, we got 6 minutes to go. We got our breakfast destination in. Then we're going to head over to Booies in Leeds, Alabama. You didn't have to turn off Smosh.
>> I did though.
>> Attention if you are talking >> about Resident Evil back there. So, we'll get where we're going with 40%, but we actually we're going to hit another supercharger because I saw it on the map and I'm kind of curious to what it's like. Said it had 22 stalls, 22 bays. So, I want to see what that's all about. And yeah, 6 minutes to go. We really don't need to sit here for 6 minutes. So, we're going to call it.
We're going to call it. I've got plenty of juice.
Tap the button. Disconnect.
Don't trip. Don't die.
Reconnect. Close the door.
Enter the car.
Install seat belt.
>> I should probably do the same.
>> Eat pancakes.
>> We got a corner spot. I took it cuz Tesla was going to park it somewhere stupid. Maybe possibly next to this guy.
So yeah, we just did that.
>> And had we pre-planned to come to IHOP, we could have been here, have eaten, used the restroom, then charged, and avoided going to a gas station to use the restroom, which completely negates the whole point of having a non- gas powered car.
>> Very true. Very >> I think we stayed longer than we needed to charging. uh in Prattville, Alabama. But we're just going to ride this out till we get to Bies in Athens, Alabama. Puts us at 17%.
Plenty to get there. So, I'm glad we charge as long as we did when we did.
All right. Bad weather. It's raining.
Tesla's handling things perfectly fine.
But this dude's on a freaking motorcycle.
Oh, okay. He's built for this weather, I'm about to say. But still hard pass.
>> Also, you're not supposed to use your flashers unless you're going under 45 miles an hour. Whatever the lowest you're allowed to do on the freeway is when you're allowed to use your flashers. So, all these people using them don't know.
>> We know we know it's bad weather. You don't need to put your flashers on. But, uh the Tesla does want to max out at like 65 70 with the bad weather. But, uh so far it's it's been good though.
All right, we're dipping into the yellow now. It's a caution.
Running out of juice, but we'll be there in less than 20 minutes. So, 5% in 20 minutes seems aggressive.
>> I guess you're right.
All right. So, they got us with a little scheduled 15minute stop here picking up juice so we can make our next stop which will put us there at 27% but it's a bies. There's no way we're going to be here for 15 minutes.
We're going to be here for at least 25 30 minutes. So, >> that's cuz of me.
>> So, uh we'll get way we'll get more juice.
And uh we'll see where we end up.
>> 20 cheaper here. So diesel is like a$120 cheaper. Regular gas is a dollar cheaper.
>> That's with the car wash.
>> Is that with the car wash?
>> I'm pretty sure with per Yeah, >> cuz it didn't.
>> You got to have the car wash.
>> It doesn't Oh, with purchase of the works car wash. I was so excited. I was like, man, >> so this is an interesting path that we're taking here to get to the charging station.
>> It actually makes sense. That way it's not stopping as often for people darting across the street from the pumps to the to the front of booies. That dog taking in.
>> Yeah, but we have Oh, we got lucky.
>> We got lucky here.
>> Why?
>> Because uh they don't >> Why is it leaving?
I was just doing real [ __ ] things.
>> Yeah. Yeah. This is a stupid route.
Well, it saw a truck back there unloading supplies, so it routed around.
>> No, no, no, no. It doesn't. No, >> none of this makes sense. I'm aware.
>> It did not see a truck.
>> It's right there.
>> It did not see a truck.
>> No, >> it did not see a truck. You see a truck?
>> I mean, I see.
>> But it did not see It's No.
>> Okay.
>> Absolutely not.
>> Who keeps moving my map?
>> I didn't do it. That was not me. I didn't say that much.
I mean, it's a very congest this this is a very >> Yeah, cuz we got off the interstate, went in, can't like it. It It should have just went that way.
>> Yes, I agree.
>> It's yelling at me to pay attention.
Popo.
>> Oh, no. Popo.
I think he's going to stop like he's supposed to.
>> He said Tesla's like, "Uhuh."
>> Oh, we got a cyber truck.
>> A camper one or just full of [ __ ] in the back? I don't know what he's doing. So, I I guess with a Cyber Truck, if you're towing, you need to take up like a lot of space.
>> He doesn't have anything attached.
>> I'm just saying if you were towing.
>> Yeah, like you have to take up a lot of space.
>> All right, let's see if we get lucky with this one. And it charges well.
We're kind of on the line here. This parking spot 14.3. Uh, I don't know. I don't know about you sometimes >> how it backs in. Probably trying to put you closer to the thing >> maybe.
>> I'm just waiting for it to I'm just waiting for it to put in park. Just waiting.
>> Just Oh, are we we done now?
>> Look, telemetry from your vehicle indicates improper use of full self-driving. Keep your hands on the wheel and remain attentive at all times.
>> I got feature will no longer operate after five more strikeouts.
>> I got five more. I'm good.
All right, let's see here.
What kind of connection do we get?
Let's see what it says first.
8 minutes. Look how fast that thing is charging.
>> Oh yeah.
>> 150. Jeez.
>> That's good stuff.
>> 173.
>> 80 minutes to get to 80.
>> 38 cents.
>> I mean, you're paying 220.
>> Yeah, you're paying 230. You're paying for the convenience of this not taking forever in a day. I'm for it. Charge me a dollar. I don't care. I wonder if they're still giving away a free year of supercharging cuz that came out right when we picked ours up. Dang. 15 minutes. Well, they said 15 minutes.
Well, it says to to continue the trip.
So, it was underestimated or overestimated.
>> Overestimating >> one or the other. But either way, let's go inside.
>> Okay.
>> See how much juice we got when we come back.
>> All right. So, the fan kicked on.
I don't know if this is a battery thing or not, but look at >> the tires.
>> The car definitely got dirty. Got real dirty.
>> Telling me right now.
>> But I will say just imagine one day when there's 138 pumps or I take it back. 138 charging stations.
One day >> they'll be reversed.
>> Yes. One day Bies h we won't be able to call them gas stations anymore because it'll be the other way around.
>> What I was gonna say is, you know, over the holidays and stuff, it gets absolute bonkers at these places with cars four deep trying to get in. I bet we will still be able to get over there in way less time.
>> 100%.
Hey, look. It's a robo taxi, >> I think. I don't know if you can see it.
Robo taxi. It >> says it's robo taxi. Why so high?
>> I didn't know that's what robo taxis look like.
