Prince William's visit to Nansledan Hospital in Cornwall and St Mary's Hospital in the Isles of Scilly demonstrates how modern medical technology, including remote monitoring systems and video consultations, enables effective healthcare delivery in remote island communities, allowing patients to receive care locally rather than being transferred to mainland hospitals, while also highlighting the importance of community support and local healthcare infrastructure.

Thanks a lot.
See you later, buddy. Okay.
know there are many but yeah does a lot of the operation introduce you to uh thank you for coming to see you again last time last time we were going to see what was going to materialize changes.
Charlotte Midwife Can we go in?
>> Are we allowed in?
>> Yeah.
>> So, when was this up and running?
>> We've been in just a couple of months.
>> How do you had a few >> We had a very stubborn baby that was meant to deliver before you came. Okay.
>> But unfortunately, >> okay.
>> Good. But soon to be soon to be used.
>> Yes.
>> Fantastic. And have you got everything you need?
The vast majority of >> Yeah, we've got lots of We've got a CT monitor now that connects to the mainland. So if I have any issues with baby's heartbeat like they can get the trace up on over on the mainland which is amazing. Um any jaw disavies we've now got our TCB monitor which has um saved lots of trips away as well which is >> good.
>> Yeah. Lovely air space.
>> Yeah. What was it for?
>> Um this was MIU >> right?
>> Um but before that it was actually in Berlin before. So I was born in this room.
>> Were you born through? No way.
>> Amazing. little ladies in it.
>> Incredible.
>> And does it feel does it give parents confidence that they come and go a little bit more and stay more settled whilst the journey of pregnancy develops?
>> Yeah. So they have they're booking appointments in this room. So they get to know the environment from the minute they're find out they're pregnant all the way through.
>> Yeah.
>> It's just much more inviting space now.
So people that are quite keen to stay on the note of having to go away. What pressure do you have to have to go to the mainland? Is that >> it's medical risk? If you're nice and low risk, then you can stay here. And any medical risk that might >> Thank you. Um this is our minor injury unit. So this serves the entire aisles of silly. Um we see everything from minor injury, minor illness, um all the way through to really critically acutely ill people that the ambulance service brings through. So we can do everything from plastering here through to resuscitation. And one of the things that we've been implementing is actually our digital technology. So I'm going to pass you over to Carl to introduce himself.
>> Carl.
>> Hello Carl.
>> Hello. I'm one of the AQGPS. So we provide support and we aim to try and keep people in the community.
>> Brilliant. K. And you can can you see everything just through the camera here?
You watching everything that goes on here?
>> Absolutely. Yeah.
>> Brilliant. And where are you based Carl?
>> Uh Campbour.
>> Campbour.
>> Campborn Hospital.
>> Brilliant. And so are you on call most of the time? So if something happens, they could just pick up the phone and you have to get straight on your monitor and have a look.
>> That's it. That's it. Yeah. We're always always on standby.
>> Yeah. Brilliant. And Cole, how much can you diagnosing this way, how easy is it for you to be able to kind of, you know, triage effectively what's going on?
>> Yeah. So, I mean, obviously, it helps an awful lot to be able to see the patient and especially with complex cases, that's where we probably have the most input. Um, and the technology is improving all the time. So, I expect within the next year, it's even going to be more remarkable. But it's it's already a game changer.
>> Brilliant. We'll have you operating from their car soon.
>> That would be the next step.
>> Brilliant. Thanks.
>> One things to add is we do have our AR um AR goggles. So the concept is it's handsfree. It will sit around the clinician's head. So whilst we are doing uh an intervention, Cole will be able to then see through the goggles through the clinician and get a much closer look as to what the intervention is that we're trying to achieve and help facilitate that work as well.
So we're there. We're getting there.
>> And is this allowing more people to stay on the island? So you're now your threshold is much higher as to what has to go to the mainland.
>> Yeah. So we feel much closer to our mainland colleagues. And I'm going to show you the diagnostic suite. But bringing all that together means we can share that governance, share the accountability, and share that decision- making. And actually the the goal is is that we want to keep our patients in the community. So we can absolutely increase that threshold. And if there is anything that we can't do and it's absolutely necessary, then we'll bring in our helicopter service um and fix wing and then move them over to the mainland. But absolutely, we're already facilitating this space really well and pushing what is the art of the possible.
>> And did I hear on that that note, did I hear about drones potentially?
>> Yes, >> because you guys have been an amazing pilot project to be able to work out medical distances and >> Yeah. So we're already scoping the land, looking at what infrastructure needs to be and really looking at what does the pathology side look like? What does the medical delivery of equipment look like?
>> You manage the family without >> Yeah. Well, you were back and forth to dare with me quite a lot and it's it's a lot.
>> Yeah. Never mind the cost of it all as well. That's the thing for you guys.
Back and forwards.
>> So much better. So much easier, isn't it?
>> Good. I'm glad.
>> Yeah.
>> You've got some nice people looking after you as always.
>> Trying to see Rachel. Hi.
>> Good morning.
>> Hello. Oh, great. Grace, very nice to you, Grace.
>> Good. Well, best of luck. Thanks.
>> Speedy, speedy recovery.
>> Nice PJs as well, by the way.
>> The best PJ, >> do you mind me telling his Royal Highness that you're the oldest resident on the island?
>> Hello.
>> Are you Hilda?
>> Yes. So, would you like to tell >> I never ask a lady how I never ask lady.
>> I'm 102.
>> You're not?
>> Yeah, >> Hilda. My goodness, that's amazing.
>> You don't look anywhere near 102. You don't know yet.
Me?
>> Never. No way.
>> And have you lived here all your life, Hilda?
>> I I was born on St. Martin, >> right?
>> And then my parents live my dad worked on a land and then when I was one and a half, we came down here.
>> Oh, fantastic.
>> Been here ever since.
>> Yeah.
>> Good.
>> Oh, I hope you make a, you know, a fast recovery.
>> Do you feel looked after down here? Is it?
>> Oh, yeah. But I told you I've got arthritis in me, you know, got damage in my brain.
>> Oh, okay. But 102 that that's going well. I mean, it's very impressive.
>> Still lives on her own at home.
>> No way.
>> She's got some really good family, >> but she's a very independent lady, aren't you, Hilda?
>> I can see that. Living down here, you've got to be quite independent, haven't you?
>> Yeah, you have.
>> Yeah. Very nice.
>> Oh, good. Well, I hope you're up and about very soon, Hills.
>> I hope so.
>> Very nice to see.
>> And I'm walking.
>> Walking. Exactly. I'm sure you will be.
You won't need that soon. That'll be gone.
>> Yeah. I'll be breaking or something.
>> Find another use for it. I'm sure out here always doubling up options.
>> Oh, it's very nice to see you this morning.
>> Thank you as well.
>> Yeah. Speedy recovery.
>> Yeah.
>> Nice to see you.
>> Can I introduce you to two of the children from school who've been really busy fundraising. Mrs. Helen, who is the manager.
>> What's your name?
>> My name's Morning. your >> pat. And you guys been into fundraising?
>> Yeah, we are in Eco Club.
>> Really?
>> Yeah. So, we've been like fundraising to get a blanket for um What have you been fundraising? How have you done that?
>> So, we've been plants and selling them.
>> Wow. Do you like your gardening or is this the first time you tried it?
>> No, I've actually got a Do you >> What flowers do you like the most?
>> Yeah, it's a hard. Do you like colors or do you like smells?
>> I like >> I can't I like tulips.
>> Tulips. Very nice. Do tips grow quite well down here.
>> Um >> you haven't yet.
>> It's going well.
>> You very generously have bought some blankets specifically for our palative care room, haven't you? So when people are are really unwell, we have particular palative care room and we put out a plea to the community um for fundraising and these fabulous students from five island school said well they'll use their eco club and do some fundraising for us which is really we really appreciate it.
>> Have you enjoyed it? It's probably quite fun.
>> You think you'll do it again?
>> Definitely.
>> Very good. And this is one of the blankets here.
>> Yeah.
>> So they're going they're presenting it to Helen today >> and that is one of Who did the >> mother?
It's very smart. Well, well done, girls.
Fantastic. Have you done anything like this before? The first time you filing?
>> Um, we haven't done I think we fundraised for other things, but we haven't done anything like this, but we have like gone um we went up and some maring grass.
>> That's considered part of the sea fence work, wasn't it? You work really hard doing that.
>> Yeah, >> we've got like um a display at school pictures and stuff.
>> I can see two future gardeners with a good business up there.
>> Well done.
>> And if I can introduce you to Sue and her husband Clyde.
>> Hello. Very nice. I'm very pleased to meet you. Very pleased to meet you.
>> Good. Can I go a sit with that here?
>> Please do. Please do.
>> Have you been in a while?
>> Yes, >> I've been between here and Trilisk. Um I was here I had done an operation and then I came here to recover but then they thought there was something wrong with my heart. So I was airlifted up to Trilisk.
Um but everything was fine. So I'm now back here recovering and hope to go home in a couple days.
>> Where'd you live? We're on and we live near the church down in the town.
>> We live there just opposite there. So good.
>> Yeah.
>> Yeah.
>> Has it been a blessing being able to be here a bit more because presumably you'd have to be in more in the mainland.
>> It's hard work when we're on the mainland living away from home and everything and keeping things going and um so it's easier here because I pop up each night see so it's only two minutes and so everything's a lot easier.
>> I know the nurses here very well because I used to be a frequent visitor. Um, so I've got an ill. It's called stiff person syndrome. I don't know if you ever heard that.
>> Heard of those.
>> One in a million.
>> She's got >> Yeah. One in a million. One in a million. You are. We say to Sue, she is one in a million.
>> Certainly is.
>> So, it's made my recovery hard.
>> Is that okay?
>> Yeah.
>> So, actually would have been very difficult for you to be on the islands without the sort of >> Yes.
>> Yes.
>> And we've obviously got nice views now and everything. So, it's lovely.
>> Yeah. It's just just being familiar with the nurses makes me you know >> so much easier than being somewhere you don't know as well sort of big hospital also being airlifted in a big hospital that's all >> that was very scary >> I bet it was it's all quite dramatic isn't it >> yeah it was obviously you done many many patients in the back of your >> lot of wide eyes most of the time >> is the helicopter noisy and the whole thing is just kind of >> that's what they said they kept saying to me the roer blades will not stop >> we hope not anyway has it >> um Yeah. So, it was um yeah, it had to be done, you know, and uh yeah, >> they do a marvelous job. So, back in house and and they can pretty much look after you and do everything from here now.
>> Yeah, they can. Yeah. And they're sort of, you know, getting me ready to sort of get a care plan in place so that I can go home >> and have carers come in and help me do things when my husband does a lot for me when he's at work.
The sort of thing that most don't know about Building stuff out here all the people staying put for this island.
do it again.
>> This is it.
It's a bit more challeng.
What a difference.
Reassurance.

One time, one at a time.
