Removable partial denture design follows five key principles: (1) extension of base to accommodate prosthesis movement, (2) major connector for stabilization, (3) force direction along the long axis of abutment teeth, (4) guide planes for stability and retention while respecting periodontal ligament tolerance, and (5) maximum support from adjacent soft tissue denture-bearing surfaces. The step-by-step design process involves identifying saddle areas (color-coded yellow for teeth needing replacement, pink for extension), marking support areas in red, establishing bracing and reciprocation with guide planes, designing major and minor connectors, and positioning indirect retainers perpendicular to the factual line and as far as possible from it.
