Brilliant Sunrises & Sunsets Streak ~ Tuesdays Are Good If You Can Get'em ~ Live From Wellfleet MAAdded:
8:00 a.m. Tuesday, May [music] 26th.
Where are we? Let's play that game.
Where is TK? Where is T-Rex? [music] Uh T-Rex is celebrating at his favorite resort in South Dennis, and guess what?
May 26th is T-Rex birthday. He's nine.
And Jack Sillin, looks like you're 25, Jack Sillin. Where [music] are you?
That's one of the TK uh weather students from long ago. Look at this beautiful hallway. Where are we? There's a door around here somewhere. I'll just go through one of the rec rooms, and here [music] is a door, and let's go out the door at 8:00 in the morning. On Tuesdays are good if you can get them.
We've got bicycles, we've got tables, and this is just one level of this place where we can say it is pine pollen season. But, the good news is it's it's been raining. I'm going to forego showing you all the rainfall maps, but I will tell you that in the last 24 hours, Berkshire County, Massachusetts to Middlesex County, Massachusetts had another half inch of rain yesterday, and Cumberland County, Maine had another inch of rain. So, we've done a good job of washing away some of the pollen.
Let's give this a little test. Is this pollen gone by? No. And even though it rained, oh my goodness. So, this is what's on the car now, these pine pollen.
And it's very pretty though. There's a lot of fragrant uh flo- flora and fauna.
Fragrant uh fauna, I don't know about that, but the flora is very fragrant.
And I'm walking over here to see if I can't see the sun. We'll keep walking.
I'll show you the sunrise pictures coming in this morning. Uh Bob Maxon got this uh in Connecticut, Mike in Milford. And that red sky in morning, the sailor don't worry, everything's going to be all right today. But, it's just remarkable how many in a row of beautiful red sky at night and red sky at morning. TJ in Rhode Island shared this red sky in morning also today. And just the same cloud that it had come through and it was the heat breaking front last week and the cloud from that front has been somewhere in the northeastern United States now since last Thursday. So let's let's see. Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday, this is like 6 days in a row with that same cloud being illuminated when the sun comes up or goes down and I there was an interesting question from Gil in Connecticut. He said TK, is this a mackerel sky? And I said that looks like a unison of both mackerel and mare's tails. So a mackerel sky is the altocumulus, mare's tails are the cirrus way up high and that's what we have. We have some cirrocumulus clouds and usually when you have cirrocumulus clouds, I think I can zoom in on these a little bit cuz I'm wearing my noise canceling microphone so audio doesn't change. That indicates there's a fairly potent weather system within a a few hundred miles, sometimes as far away as a thousand miles and it is the same old front, but it's off to our south today. So Tuesdays are good if you can get them has been our motto for more than a year because it seems like a lot of times you don't have the nicest weekend and then everyone goes back to work and it's a nice day and sure enough that's what's happening. Here's the surface map and we're between fronts.
There's a potent front up in Canada. Now I show these surface maps from the weather uh prediction center, but they don't show the precipitation in Canada. That's why you have those distinct lines of the Canadian border, but there's a lot of rain and even some uh elevation snow in central Canada with that low that's going to go north of us. So that's a front north of us and there's also a front south of us that does show the precipitation out over the mid-Atlantic states into our south and then right there is the blue H, uh the 1025-ish millibar high pressure system between the two fronts is giving us a glorious Tuesday in New England with temperatures in the low 80s. I think even here by some of the beaches where we get an offshore flow, we're going over the other side and going surfing. Other side, what am I looking at here? Give you some perspective. So, that's Great Island here in Wellfleet, Massachusetts.
And if I had a zoom lens, we could look all the way over to to Plymouth and the the Cape Cod Canal over in that direction. And then that's Wellfleet Harbor. This is called the gut here.
We'll see much more of this in the end more. Yesterday, we celebrated William's birthday. So, lots of birthdays and of course the Memorial Day. I heard there were some canceled activities on Memorial Day. I don't get that. Why would you cancel a Memorial Day activity because it's raining? Uh certainly those that fought for us fought in the rain and every kind of weather. Uh regardless, it's a fairly straightforward forecast for today and tomorrow and then things are going to really kind of go off the rails. And we can look downstream at one of the reasons things are going to be so difficult and challenging to forecast because we have almost a winter-like blocking pattern, but summer-like heat and in Europe this afternoon before even lunch hour was over in London, it was 88Β° and Napoli, Italy was 95Β°. So, these are the hottest readings ever in the month of May. Not just daily records, but all-time May records since we've been keeping records. And in Europe, the records go back a lot longer than they go back in the United States.
So, that's an anomalous ridge. And I'm going to try and show this from a different kind of perspective. This is a the 500 millibar height anomaly. And wherever you see the darker orange way up over Hudson Bay, Canada, that's anomalous warmth high in the sky and often translates to down near the ground. And then out over the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, there's an anomalous low-pressure system and anomalous cold high in the sky over the central Atlantic. And as this evolves this week after we have a couple of warm days, that anomalous cold high in the sky.
These are also the steering currents. A real cold anomaly is coming in on Friday and Saturday. So cold, in fact, that it could snow at the top of Mount Washington on Friday or Saturday. Uh so, that's the reason for the extremes. It's called the high amplitude flow. It's not new. Perhaps it's accentuated now because of the Earth turning a little bit warmer, but it's been happening since before time, really. Before we've been here, there has been extreme weather on Earth.
I'll look at those. Yeah, that would be a mackerel sky. They often say mackerel sky, mackerel sky, not 24 hours dry, but the rain is going to stay south. That front to our south is going to be very robust. Lots of systems, almost looking like subtropical storms going between uh North Carolina, the Bahamas, and out south of Bermuda. So, that southern front is not going to come north. So, our air is going to be coming from the north, where this morning, I want to show the satellite image from 8:00 this morning. Or actually, it was 7:00, wasn't it? And there are those clouds from above. This is from 22,000 mi up, and you can see those streaks of cirrus clouds across New England, the same edge of the same cloud and front that's been here since last week. And if you look closer at the valley region, especially in New York and Pennsylvania, you can make out the valley fog. We did radiate last night with temperatures and dew points going down into the 40s and 50s.
Cool spot in New England, I think, was 41 in uh the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont this morning.
Oh, we've got some paddlers in those paddlers may have come from our house.
Is that we're and Monique on a morning paddle?
Could be.
So, yeah, we've been renting these houses mostly weir for a couple years.
And that's one, and that's another. And I think the owner bought a huge portion of this land ages ago, and it's been selling it off. And what a a brilliant investment. And thank you for sharing.
And more on that probably in tomorrow's and more. But here's the forecast. Now, I'm just going to use the GFS.
And forego the the short range. Use those again tomorrow. And the GFS shows the front to the north staying north for now and the front to the south staying south for now. There's been flooding from Texas. That flooding rain is going to go due east. A fairly fast, fairly flat flow. It's hot in Montana. It's snowing in the mountains of Oregon. So yes, high amplitude extremes. May is going out like a lion. So after we have a couple of nice days, we're going to see that a back-doorish kind of cold front coming at us on Thursday. It doesn't look like it's doing much, but then that's really going to be Thursday night and Friday. Uh there's uh upper level low that's going to be strengthening in Quebec and sinking south. And this is very consistent with all the global models and how it's looked over the last 3 days. Last week it didn't look like this was going to happen, but here it is on Friday. A low pressure system is going to travel from northwest to southeast and the timing and exact track of this is impossible, but there will be some very cold rain and some thunderstorms with this and maybe some hail and a chance that as this goes southeast and across the Gulf of Maine and Cape Cod on Saturday morning. You might have saw that little bit of blue at Mount Washington. So Mount Washington could have a coating of snow here and that would be May 30th and then Sunday is the last day of May, May 31st and we're going to have uh between fronts and looking pretty good.
Temperatures will rebound back to the 60s, maybe 70s and there's a lot of heat in the middle of the nation. Anomalous heat going up into Canada, up toward Hudson Bay and another upper level low kind of digs through here Monday and Tuesday. And we're going to take this out now to Wednesday, June 3rd and stop it. And it's looking like a a warming trend is developing right here and you have that blue line. That is the 540 line in eastern Maine and that'll be the last of that upper level low pulling out and it'll be turning much warmer again at that point for the middle of next week.
Whenever you have a nice middle of the week, you always got to watch out for weekends and we are high into graduation season and wedding season, so please Mother Nature, kind of change that rhythm up where we can get the maybe the rain out of the way on a Wednesday and a nice weather on a Saturday. Uh but that's not happening this week. This week well, Saturday will be improving. Maybe we get most of the rain out of the way Friday. So, not in a hurry on our Tuesdays are good if you can get them.
Going to blend my Sunday vibe with my Tuesday vibe and uh the end more. It's T-Rex birthday today. And happy birthday T-Rex. We visited him yesterday as we were celebrating celebrating William's birthday and Dennis, there was a ring around the sun. Usually ring around the sun or moon, snow or rain soon, but not in this case. It's staying away.
And uh maybe we'll get another red sky at night tonight. Uh we're going to the beach and yesterday we traveled from Weymouth, picked up another tenth of an inch of rain in some spots uh picked up another uh appreciable amount of rain, enough to at least water the garden a little bit.
Yesterday's weather today and more.
And more, May flowers are bright.
Something about the lack of ultraviolet sunshine light makes the color more vivid on this Memorial Day Monday morning.
We brought Stephen early because he's getting soaked out there. Nice little batch of rain coming through.
But the air is shifting, it's coming around and even though it's a cold front going by, it's going to end up being warmer because the air is going to come in from the west.
And we are getting some sunshine today.
Not sure how far south and east it's going to make it, but we'll be chasing.
Just as fishermen are chasing the first stripers of the season.
10:20, there's the back edge of the rain coming through Worcester, front edge in Weymouth. Definitely heavier to the north.
Kind of falling apart to the south. Um 11:00 a.m. ceremonies are getting kind of wet here in eastern Massachusetts.
And someone tending some buoys out there. Can you focus? Come on, focus. No.
Not going to focus. I don't have much of a mast, but the protocol today is half mast sunrise to noon and then full mast.
So, light goes up a couple of feet here.
It's wind now picking up from the west and even 11:45.
Male cardinal bouncing around. Oh, and a sparrow.
And the sky is brightening. It's still raining, but about 5 more minutes it's done.
Winds from the west. I can feel the sun already even though I can't really see it.
Let's check the rain gauge. We had about a half inch Sunday into 8:00 a.m.
Monday.
And since 8:00 a.m. we've picked up another.11. So, it looks like about 6/10 of an inch of rain all in all here.
Where at one point the NAM had us in the 2 to 3 inch range.
But, some spots picked up 3 inches just south of New England.
All right, we're driving south. We may get to visit with the T-Rex, but mostly going to see William. Maybe we'll go to Mayflower Beach. You guys want to go to Mayflower?
60Β° and the rain is ending about the same time as our remembrance ceremonies in Weymouth.
Passing the town field.
Town Hall right over there.
Jones River.
65Β° with that rain drops. A little convection held on to Plymouth County.
Just talked to Kevin though in Dennis.
He says, "No, just a little drizzle."
Sunshine is chasing me. A lot of times the back edge of these fronts have some of the heaviest rain. Oh, just stopped.
65Β° going through Sandwich. Happy to be going in the direction of Dennis instead of Weymouth at this time.
>> [music] >> Here we are on the north side of Cape Cod. It's just after 3:00. We just had some lunch at Lost Dog.
There's a farm right behind here with some horses.
And I'm wondering if maybe I pick some grass and go like this if the horse might come over.
No?
It's going to be thinking about it.
You think about it. You come on over and say hello.
See, most horses I think are friendly.
Most animals are quite social and you can see by the movement of the head that this horse is happy that I've picked a little grass.
And hi.
Hi.
All right, I'll get some more.
I get some more.
That one was kind of a fail. Let's try that again.
Yeah.
I've never met this horse.
But I call him Mr. Ed.
And I call him Mr. Brown.
And then we got a crow up there. There's definitely baby crows in the top of that pine tree.
How do I know?
Cuz that's what I do.
I'm a crowologist.
Along with the horseologist.
Hi.
Any chance we could get a selfie together?
Oh, here comes a little pony.
Pony's coming over.
Seriously sweet pony shed.
Now all the other horses are a little jealous.
We got a pony. You guys want to see a pony?
Hi.
Hi. You want some grass, too?
I've never I've never actually met a pony.
But there's some grass.
All you got to do is say hello and they come over and say hello.
There's a pony. Have you ever seen a pony?
Yeah, a few times.
I don't think I've ever met a pony. My sister does do horse back riding.
Yeah.
Look at you.
You eat Oh, it's a little shy.
Hi.
Mr. Red. This is so fun. He does look like Mr. Red, doesn't he?
And it attracts a crowd like a crowd, huh?
Hello.
Sayers Lee sweet pony shed fuffle.
I know. That one looks like Peaches.
Rest in peace, Peaches.
Journey.
>> [clears throat] >> Want some?
Oh boy, we're having more fun than I ever thought we would have. Want to go to the beach? Want to play with everyone?
Go down the beach and play kickball?
Yeah.
Play with your new balls.
I wasn't going to say it.
He had birthday balls.
For our next trick I don't know, maybe the beach or Chicago Tower.
Birthday boy gets the best seat.
>> [laughter] >> And here we are just uh in Memorial Day afternoon, most of the crowd is gone and here comes the sun all of a sudden. It's feeling really nice and there is plenty of room at the beach. Just a few people in their shorts and bathing suits right here.
And we're going to be making our way up toward Wellfleet for sunset at low tide.
Getting nicer by the second. Look who we found. Angela thought it was a party wrecks for a minute. Was You see the ball? Get the ball. Yeah. Where is it?
Where is it? What are you doing?
Ready? Sit. Stay.
Ready? Get the ball. I know it's kind of a big one.
All right.
Ready? Get that ball. Your earrings.
Okay, so we get 5 minutes with Rex. He's not used to this one. It's a Wiffle ball. I don't know where the tennis balls went.
But still chase it though, can't you?
Good boy.
What's that bird?
He's going back to Angeles.
Can't wait.
Yeah.
We wore him out pretty quickly playing a little ball.
Kevin William working on the car. Sun's coming out. Ooh, halo.
See that? That's a departing cirrus clouds. Ring around the sun or moon. Rain is done for a few days.
This beach has gone to the dogs.
There's a whole lot of dogs here today.
This is cutest beach by the way.
It smells a lot better here, too, by also by the way, whatever.
Let's see Rex causing havoc.
About to go out there to catch some waves.
Catch some waves.
I got to see Rex here.
T-Rex, what are you doing?
Ah.
These guys.
On a You want a hula chase.
I'm going to bring him in.
Come on, come on, come on, come on.
It's 67Β° >> [music] >> Wellfleet Wellfleet and look at that, the northern edge of that same cloud that has given us so many red sky at night sailor's delight and then followed by red sky in the morning, sailor take warning.
But I think this time it's more delight.
Had a ring around the sun today and now we're going to get a glorious sunset, too.
Road's in much better shape than it was a few days ago. Sign, sign, can't you read the sign?
Wellfleet Harbor.
I like the puddle and I like to swirl of the pollen in the puddle.
Everything is a wave, isn't it?
Look at those serious waves up there.
And we're going to have maybe a sun dog in a short time.
Watch out, Tim.
Incoming traffic. That's a cool license plate. Forecaster. You got to know what that is. Look, they still got lilacs here.
It's Surf T O H T N G B S 4.
Mhm.
Smell them?
Ah, they're so pretty.
Never been here before.
They got weather instruments.
Waiting for a sun dog.
Waiting for the sun dog. And here we are. Uh still quite a ways before sunset, but this is the Wellfleet Gut.
So, we're getting around today, aren't we?
And there goes Joe and Weir and Monique in the gut.
Beautiful Memorial Day evening.
Hard armor.
No armor.
1 2 3 4 a little staircase.
Old school wild cranberry.
Voila.
Haven't had a nice spray in a couple days. There's one.
Solar glare.
And we've got a wave of differential advection in the water.
Tides competing against one another in a wave of pollen. There's a pollen wave right there.
This one's incredibly fragrant, too. Uh my app says it's all the aster.
There's probably a better name for it than that.
Mhm.
Who's in there? What's going on up there? Is someone having fun without me?
And there's the old Vantage Pro 2 that's up on the roof. It's at 75Β° and supposedly it's supposed to shelter Oh, it just went down to 73 73.
And it's supposed to shelter out the sunshine. So, we're in the 70s here in Wellfleet as the sun goes down on Memorial Day.
It's gorgeous. What a house. The sound system goes up through the entire house.
And the birds and just remarkable. Osprey with a fish.
Okay, we have a sun dog. There was going to be a sun dog and there is a sun dog.
Very brief, but there it is. It's beautiful. It's almost like it's in a sea.
That's [snorts] it. That's what we talked about.
>> Rob, just bring the sun dog right there to the left of the sun. It's a refraction of sunlight off of six-sided ice crystals in the cirrus clouds.
And Jim, I think you called that you said we'd see something. Sun's getting lower.
Sun dog's getting brighter.
More and more and more.
Now we have condensation trails and cirrus clouds blending together with the sun dog.
A waxing blue moon. Look how fast those clouds are going. We're calling it a day. We've got piano music going. We've got blue sky and cirrus as the sun hits the horizon here in Wellfleet.
What a treasure of a Memorial Day.
Respectful day, fun, meeting up with family and tributes for those we lost taking care of our country.
Look at the sky. The texture is amazing.
So, watch the clouds recede here on the webcam from Weymouth first.
We're out there.
Picked up about another tenth of an inch of rain.
And then the sun and the great texture.
It's amazing with this cloud that's been ever present for the last five days, how many red sky at night and red sky in morning we've had.
And now over to the Cape Cod cam where we got to talk to T-Rex [music] for a few minutes today. That was pretty fun.
Met some horses, hung out with Kevin and his son, my godson William, who just turned 30.
God bless.
And now with friends in Wellfleet for our Tuesdays are good if you can get them surf.
Thank you, Alex, [music] for your contributions today from Maine.
There's the sun dog.
And there is the sunset.
Thank you so much for watching and participating in the TK weather experience.
We'll be back on our Wednesday, the day to make the call on the weekend.
Snow?
No.
We'll see.
Talk to you tomorrow.
