This video demonstrates pond fish breeding behavior, where koi fish produce foam and ammonia-like odors during spawning, and shows how to protect eggs using mops and sponges. It also illustrates proper techniques for removing large fish (like a 25-pound arowana) from ponds using nets, and demonstrates how to assess and repair structural damage (such as a gazebo with bent legs) after severe weather events.

Death and destruction all in 1 dayAdded:
All right, guys. Big Ridge and Reaper here. I was sitting here building this other archway. I got done with them legs. I'm almost done with this and I got the archway done so I can carry it out now and finish it and Reaper comes over. So, he starts helping while I'm I'm cameraing. I know it looks like he's built this whole thing and I do nothing but sit here with a camera.
>> That's the way it happened, man.
But, uh, now, yeah, we got the other archway in, and, uh, we're going to start this day off by, uh, finishing up that gazebo out there.
Okay, guys. So, I know it's hard to see, but here's the the archway that we had yesterday, and me and Reaper just put this one up over here, and it goes up and around there, and back down. So, we got an outway this way, which is going to go that's going to be I'm going to continue that gravel driveway all the way down.
And then that's going to be the addition there.
So, right here in between, this is all going to be like flag stone or something over to them steps. So, we have the way out. I won't have to mow over here no more. And then, uh, we put these chairs around here around the fireplace for some odd reason. I don't know. We carried the boards up, but now the angles are off. So, I got to cut this the right angle now to get it back against there. And then under here, uh, listening to all you guys, we are going to take the tables, put it on this side, and the couches, put it on that side, and then move the bar to this side, which will open up this whole side, which has the pond and walkway through. So, we're okay with that.
Then, uh, let me see the fish.
With this warm weather, they should be breeding already.
Okay, guys. This is the view from the couches. Here's one seat. Here's another seat right across here. And then we got the bag seat here. So, let me turn around. This is way open. I love this.
It just looks so much more inviting now to walk in there. Look how big and open it is. And you got straight walkway to the back steps. Couches here. The bar is over there. Now, I got to rearrange that wood to give it a little more room, but table and chairs over there. And here's what I like about it. The couches are over here, and they're set low. So, you sit low and you can see everything. At the table and chairs, you're sitting up high. You can see right over the bar, no problem. So, uh, I like it. Now, with the two arches in, we just got to fix this wood stuff. Move it over that way more over to the arch. Move these pieces more. Maybe move that pole right there.
get this to stick back farther because it's overhanging the cement. If I can get that like right on the edge of the cement and overhanging the ground some, it would give us more room. So, ouch.
I know every video, but there's rocks down here on the on this thing. I I'm stepping on them.
>> Keep finding you.
>> I'm the best at finding rocks to walk on. So, uh yeah, I like this. Now, this whole side is open. I don't like how that arch is leaning. That one leg's got to come in.
>> That arch we put in pretty good.
This one got some problems.
Let's see if we can bend this over here.
Okay. Now, because it's not going to be cold no more at night, the lowest it's going to get is a 47° in like a week. Uh everything else is 55° at night time.
So, we started carrying all of the elephant ears out here. Well, that one fell over, but we're starting. We got one, two, three, four now. And we've got probably 20 more to go. But we got all this area to fill up here, all across here, across over there. Plenty more room for elephant ears, but it just it's it takes a little bit, you know, carry it all the way from there, bring it down here, go down the steps, come around this little island here, set it in the water, then go back and get another one.
So, that's just going to take some time, but I'll get it done. Also, if you guys remember, we used to we had the poles ran for the lights, and they went right around this whole thing. And then they came up here. Well, I didn't like that.
So, now I ran them straight across straight across where this pole is here.
That's where the addition's going to go.
And then brought them right over here.
Now, what that does is include this walkway here. And this is all grass, but that's all coming out all the way to the edge of this. Across here, up to there, over to here, down here, all the way to this right here, straight over, straight to that. This is all going to be flag stone. There will be no grass here. And uh it will continue that wide straight out to where the gravel driveway will be. So, I repositioned the lights. I didn't like them the way they were. I don't like them here because right now they're in the middle of the grass where it's hard to mow. But you got to remember that if I go straight against this, see how they're they're right against the wall right here. Um, this will be all the addition right here. So basically that wall's coming out 16 ft and this wall is going over 37T 16 by 37 and all that's got to be dug out and put a footer in and all that kind of stuff. So that's going to be the addition eventually. I'm not worried about building that now, but I am trying to build around it. So, this walkway will go in and we won't have to mess with it no more. But yeah, I like what we've done now. We still I need a couple more guys here. Uh take this wood, move it closer to the tree, trim off the edges, put the the the stumps back farther, and back there where that seat is for the bar. We need to move this over and bring it off the cement a little bit. Um, me and Josh lifted up the back side of the gazebo and we kicked under a 4x4 under it. So, it's a lot more level. So, now I got to level this corner, that corner, and then we can fill in with cement how much we need uh to hold it level. And then we can screw it down cuz that's where I'm going to keep it. I like it. It's sort of like here's a gazebo over there, here's the deck over here, and everything in the middle still incorporates us all together, you know?
And we got the pond in the middle and the lights go around everything and incorporates all that. So, this is one big like uh area.
I like it.
Well, we come back here and Jerry said he's seen all kinds of breeding activity this morning. You know, it is it is up in the 80s now. And oh, I see the foam.
Yes, they're breeding, Jerry, for sure.
>> Oh, yeah.
>> There's foam everywhere.
You can smell it when you come out the door.
>> I didn't smell it.
Well, that's good.
And they're breeding right where I have the mops and the the brushes at, too.
So, we can save some eggs that way.
They won't be able to eat them all.
Awesome.
Oh, look. We're starting to get yellow flowers. See them koi up there?
Yeah. When they express the eggs and they uh do their thing and fertilize the eggs, it smells like just horribly just ripe and ammonia and all that. And that's what all this is going to make it smell like. All that foam and so we know it's breeding activity now.
Cool. Cool. Cool. And our first flower of the year. I like that. There's some more over here. Daffodils are coming up.
That's what them are, I think.
These things here.
What are these plants right here in the corner with the yellow flowers?
>> Irises.
>> Irises. Really? Them ones right there?
It's an iris, too.
>> Yeah.
>> Okay.
I don't know why I thought daffodil.
>> Yellow iris. And then there's the blue flag, which is a type of iris.
Oh, they're definitely in the breeding behavior. Look at this. Oh, yes.
That's it. Make me some eggs. There you go.
We're going to have some babies.
Now, last summer they ate 90% of their eggs. This is why we put out mops this summer so we can take some out cuz we only got like 10 10 6 in koi in there and them were the only ones that made it from last year.
I say around 10 cuz you don't never see them all at the same place.
There goes Nope. That's a big one down deep.
That's crazy.
And there's, you know, that smell has gotten more and more pungent through the day.
All right. So, anyways, let's get off the fish here. Marcus and Dave showed up. What's up, guys? We went out there and we picked up the back side of the gazebo and put another 2x4 under each leg. And it looks like it's still maybe one more 2x4 off. Once we get it to the height we need, we can take our measurements and make our our footers for it. Uh the two corner ones are going to be made out of cement and the center one's going to be made out of wood cuz it's only right now it's a 4x4 height.
I do have a piece of 4x6. I can cut that and that would take up the space for sure.
Um, we took the wood and turned it around so it's facing the right way. Now we just got to move it down more.
But, uh, everything's looking good.
We're getting it done. We're going to get out there and finish that fire. This is the last time for the fire. You see there's only the whole bottom of the 3,000galon tank left and a couple of pieces here and there. So, we'll throw them all in the center. The ember should still be red hot, so we can just flop them over onto there and it should start right up. But yeah, the fire burning will be done for the year.
And it's time to mow the grass again. We Oh, we moved the dune buggy from there to the front yard to in my uh right out front of my garage where I can work on it and get it running and clean it up like that. Since Marcus and Dave got here, we brought out all of the elephant ears. Now, it's going to look atrocious for a couple days until they, you know, cuz they all wilted from being moved.
But, uh, when they come back, they're going to look amazing. And then, you know, it's 85° out here. And look what they brought these plants out, too.
Excuse me. Look at all of these. They're all out here now.
>> Just a little bit.
>> The fish are still swimming or uh they're breeding. So, uh, yeah, these guys are working their butt off here today. Thank you guys. Oh, sorry. My bad.
And, uh, let me see. Oh, we got one more plant over here for the river.
And all right, guys. We come in here and you know, look at this. We have taken out all the plants out of here. We've got a few more to go and a lot to clean up.
But Phil came by. You remember Phil from that 356 koi? Well, he brought his son over and he's showing his son all these, you know, huge catfish and stuff and then he's like, "Rook." And I'm like, "What?" He goes, "Look." And he points down and there is a giant arowana has passed. He's over three foot and we're about ready to get the uh net out and get him out of there. Unbelievable.
Okay, we got the net.
>> That net's like two foot wide.
Is that going to be big enough?
Oh yeah, he's been dead for a little while. He's stiff now.
Scoop towards his tail, otherwise he'll fall out.
And pull him up towards his tail. If you scoop that way, if you pull towards you, he's going to come out. You got to scoop towards his tail.
>> You need a bigger net.
>> No.
>> No. No. You You got him. Put Put him in.
Put him in the net.
>> Okay. Once you got him in the net, now scoop like this. There you go.
>> That's how you got to do it.
>> He's going through the net. How the hell are you breaking that?
>> All right, look.
Pull him up like that. Stop. We got the plant here. Take this arm out. All right, give me this arm here.
>> All right, now look at the size of that.
Now, put your foot next to him.
>> Right, that Oh, he fell through the net.
He come through the net. A dead fish broke through the net. Unbelievable.
Well, you know, we're going to have to pick him up like that.
>> Take him on outside. He's only 20.
>> 25.
>> 25 lbs.
>> He says 25. We do have a scale here.
We can see who's right. Take them out to the grass and set them there.
So, this is another case of an old old fish.
You know, >> you got a tape measure.
>> Yeah, we'll get the tape measure and the scale next. Let me finish this recording.
An old old fish passes.
And this is the problem we have with, you know, taking in people's fish they've had for, you know, 10, 20 years, and then we take them in and, you know, they're too big for their environment, and we let them live here and live out their their lifestyle, and then we have to deal with them passing all the time.
It sucks.
All right, so he's grabbing the scale.
Okay, so he said 20 pounds 4 ounces.
Okay, guys, just to let you know how we do things around here. Last year, we saw the koi spawn and we saw millions and millions of eggs. This year, we have six to 10 little 6-in koi. They ate all the eggs. Everything else ate the eggs. It was just it it did not work out well.
So, this year is the first year we put mops in there and koi uh sponges and all this other stuff. We've got them all around the pond and this and that.
Well, Phil was here today and he helped us take out a bunch and put into that thousandgalon tub over there. So, now we have thousands of eggs in that tub and we can raise them ourselves without the the fear of them getting eaten. Well, he asked if we could uh he can go home, grab some mobs, bring them over here, and then take them out tomorrow. I'm like, absolutely. Go ahead, buddy. You helped us out before. Of course you can.
So, him and his son went home to get some mops, and they're coming back over to lay them in here, and tomorrow they'll take them home. You know, to me, I just I love spreading happiness, you know. All right, guys. It's the next day. We had a hell of a storm last night.
I'm just taking a look around to see what the damage was.
You saw we got all the plants outside yesterday, but I saw something in my cameras. Made me sick to my stomach.
Let's go out here and look.
I got to clean up a lot of these plants left over.
All right, this all looks fine out here.
>> But if you come over this way, look, the whole gazebo got knocked over in the wind. So did this arch right here.
That's not a big deal. There's only three legs holding it up. The back legs are all buckled and turned and bent over.
What is going on with all the mops?
They're all covered with eggs or something floating.
>> Those are the ones that Phil dropped in there.
>> Oh, okay.
Hopefully I can fix this. But I know the back legs are all bent and buckled in cuz they're just hollow tube.
See that one's bent up. So is the middle one and so is that one. They're hollow aluminum tubes. So I don't think I can bend them back straight.
I won't know. I got to get like seven, eight, 10 guys out here to pick this up all at once. There's no way we can. We had six people and all we could do is slide it over. So, I'm going to need more than six to pick this up.
I can't believe the lights are still on.
It ripped all them lights down.
These lights are down.
Bar is still standing. Nothing's broken other than the legs of that.
And the worst case scenario is if I have to, I'll use its mounts for the legs and replace it with 4x4s or something. I don't know.
See, this just make me sick.
All this work into that gazebo. Finally got it set up the way I liked it. I finally was starting to enjoy it and now it's broken.
This is just sickening.
Oh man, I don't know how we're going to get this up here.
Well, the damage is to just the three legs. I guess that's a good way to look at it.
Maybe I can write the company and see if I can buy three more legs. Two corners and one center post along with the little supports on the sides cuz that's busted down too on each side or I don't know. I can't see back there.
It may be bent right here to the side supports are still good.
It does look like it's off the ground some.
So, probably bent right here is where they bent.
I don't know. It's just I can't never get ahead. Every time I try, you get something, you make it beautiful, and then it just gets destroyed.
And it's not even worth doing anything on your insurance because that was about I think 2,200 and my deductible is 2500.
The insurance is just here in case the place burns down.
So the insurance don't help me none.
Oh man, look at all the foam.
Phil was here yesterday. you saw in the video, but he he came back and brought some mops to throw in there so that he can catch some of the eggs, too.
We already took out a big batch of eggs and put up into that tub. We set the tub back up. You saw that. But I've got all these over here. We're waiting for them to get fuller of eggs.
Wow. I can't believe that.
Hopefully we can get a bunch of people here. Today's what? Thursday.
Hopefully we can get a bunch of people here maybe Saturday cuz there's only going to be me and Reaper today. And then tomorrow, uh, Marissa and Ricky will be here.
That still ain't enough people. So, Saturday, you guys all see this. This is Friday's video. Anybody close by, plan on stopping out Saturday at noon. We'll try and get everybody to lift this up and put it back. Shouldn't take too long. It just the more hands, the easier it'll be.
I guess I'll go to the store today and get some 4x4 so that once we do get it set up, we can, you know, measure the height, cut it out, and screw them in or something. I don't know.
In the meantime, I don't know if I can zoom in and show you this, but let's look here. Look at all the eggs all over this. They're everywhere in there.
There's eggs everywhere. All over these things.
And on the handle. Look at all them eggs. There's eggs everywhere.
eggs all over that handle. That's the other mop. Oh, they're all over the mop head right there. They're everywhere.
Then we got this mop head over here. And then all these plants. They're everywhere in there. We're going to have a bunch of babies here soon. And that ain't even all the mops. We have got jeez, I don't know, four more mops out there. And Phil is here now. Look at all the foam. Look at all that. They are breeding more today than they were yesterday. So, there's going to be more eggs. Phil's taking his mops now. He said they're covered with eggs everywhere. So, he said all the rocks in there are covered. The ground's covered.
There's eggs everywhere. And he says he sees the fish eating them. So, the more we get out now, the more eggs will survive.
But, let me get back to this uh gazebo.
We went and took a closer look and the center pole bent right at the roof and it looks like we can bend it right back. The end poles, they bent right here under the supports. So, the supports are still good and down the just the legs. So, we may have to replace them on each side. I'm going to call the company and see if I can buy a couple more legs. But we figured the best way we can do it is to lift it up with the forklift in the backside and have three guys. One here, one here, and one here. As we lift up, we have to walk in because it's 10t that you remember this leg used to be right here next to this bar. So, uh it's about 10t off section. As we lift it, we're going to bring it back and get it all positioned.
And we're going to leave the forklift there holding it up and then cut the legs the size we need and get things installed and screw it in to where it can not fall again.
Um, so it's not as bad as we thought. It looks like hell and there's very much potential to ruin the other legs as we're trying to bring it back up. So, we don't know yet, but we're going to try.
Um, just more work, that's all we can get it. I mean, we are very resourceful. We can figure this out. We can get it up there. So, I don't know. Anyways, I'm just going to say it.
As always, stay fishy, my friends. And you know what? As bad as things get, keep looking for the bright side. We can figure our way through this one day at a time. Till next time, stay fishy, my friends.
