Clark County Sheriff Kevin McMahill says David Van Der Meer strangled himself June 24th in the county detention center. McMahill also said Van Der Meer initially survived and was taken to University Medical Center where he died the next day. The death is under review according to the sheriff. Van Der Meer had been facing murder and insurance fraud charges in the 2006 death of his wife Bernadette at Zion National Park. Boulder City is appealing a surprise decision about building a data center.
The city council voted Tuesday to write a letter to the Bureau of Land Management after the data center originally proposed under a city lease got a green light to be built on federal land instead. City Attorney Brittany Walker said the BLM did not fulfill its duty of inner agency collaboration. The BLM did not respond to requests for comment.
And you might have seen videos on social media showing Zoox robotaxis stalled in Las Vegas traffic. So, what's behind these incidents? A Zoox spokesperson told the Review-Journal two of them were caused by third-party interactions with the vehicles. In June, a Zoox robotaxi had to be towed after a minor crash on Las Vegas Boulevard and Harmon Avenue.
Metro Police said they closed the case after neither party involved could be reached. Zoox has been offering free services since September around the resort corridor collecting data in the hopes of offering rides to paying passengers in the future.

Moving on to business news, Bally's says it's getting closer to its funding goal to build a crucial part of the A's ballpark site. Chairman Soo Kim says the money would be used to build the northwest podium of the company's mixed-use [music] project, which will feature beverage, dining, and entertainment options. Kim told the Review-Journal a few details [music] still need to be worked out, and Bally's is talking with the team and its landlord [music] to ensure the podium is ready to go when the ballpark opens in 2028. The next update on the stadium project is expected [music] August 20th.

The CDC says more than 1,600 [music] cases of cyclosporiasis have been identified across the country in at least 34 states. The illness is spread primarily through contaminated produce and sometimes water. The Southern Nevada Health District said Tuesday that no cases have been confirmed in Clark County, but residents are urged to wash their hands before handling food and rinse fresh fruits and vegetables [music] under running water.

The Athletics have fired pitching coach Scott Emerson. Bullpen coach Dan Hobb's will take over as the interim pitching coach for the rest of the season.
Emerson joined the A's organization in 2002 and became the major league pitching coach 15 years later. The A's have a 5.21 ERA at the All-Star break, the second worst in baseball, and are riding a nine-game losing streak.
