Institutional narcissism occurs when systems prioritize protecting their image over engaging with reality, causing feedback to transform from useful information into perceived threats, which leads to superficial repairs while underlying foundations deteriorate, ultimately causing the system to drift from its original purpose.

INSTITUTIONAL NARCISSISM
Added:People think narcissism is vanity. It isn't. Vanity is only the surface.
Narcissism is what happens when protecting an image becomes more important than contact with reality.
And people do it.
But systems do it, too.
At first, it looks harmless. A press release, a slogan, a target, a statement.
Then slowly, criticism becomes threat.
Questions become disloyalty.
Metrics replace lived experience.
Explanation replaces ownership.
And appearance becomes more important than outcomes.
Not are people safe? Are people healthier?
Are people flourishing? But how are we being perceived?
What does the graph say?
What does the headline say?
What can we announce?
And then something dangerous happens.
Feedback stops being information.
Feedback becomes insult.
Because every challenge is experienced as an attack.
Every concern becomes extremism.
Every disagreement becomes ignorance.
Every crack in the wall becomes unacceptable to acknowledge.
So, the walls get painted again and again and again.
Meanwhile, the foundations continue to move.
Cuz institutional narcissism does not look like arrogance.
It looks like protection from the accountability.
The sea no longer visits the river to understand itself.
It visits to admire its reflection.
And eventually, it forgets the river was never there to praise it.
It was there show it where the banks are.
Performance asks, "How do we look?"
Presence asks, "What is happening?"
The moment a system can no longer tolerate feedback, it has already started to drift.
