When storms develop in high country areas like the San Francisco Peaks, they can produce significant rainfall (over 1.5 inches in Sedona) and cooling effects (Flagstaff dropping from mid-60s to 49°F), while the Phoenix Valley remains relatively dry with temperatures in the mid-90s; however, outflow boundaries from these storms can bring gusty winds to the valley, and weather patterns typically show a midweek cooldown followed by a return to triple-digit temperatures by the weekend.

Phoenix stays hot with storm chances and breezy windsAdded:
It's actively raining up in the high country right now. We're getting a little bit on the breezy side here in the valley, so we're just trying to watch to see if any of that kind of shift south, but you know, >> [laughter] >> fingers crossed from Vanessa. I don't think we'll get any rain here in the valley. I think it will stay mostly up to the north of us, and I'll show you why here in a second. But, look at some of these rainfall totals. I mean, this is impressive. For Sedona, over an inch and a half of rain. That's in the flood advisory location right now. It's in Sedona, kind of the west Sedona area down through Oak Creek. An inch at Happy Jack, Flagstaff about 3/4 of an inch, Williams just shy of half of an inch, and Cordes Lake, that is the closest location to the valley. It's just north of here. That had some measurable rain this afternoon. So, here's a live look up in Flagstaff right now. You can see those cloudy skies and some rain in the distance, kind of covering the San Francisco Peaks. What I want to point out, look at Flagstaff at 49°. We were in the mid-60s just about 2 hours ago.
So, that rain is really cooling down some of these spots. 55 in Payson, and we're at 96, still warm here in the valley. So, let's look ahead to the next couple of days, then we'll take a closer look at the active rain. 97 for tomorrow, 96 for your Wednesday here in Phoenix. And then, look at Thursday, a couple of degrees cooler. We'll also be a little bit on the breezy side the next couple of afternoons. All right, so here's the first alert radar. Showers and storms, lots of lightning out there.
You could see pretty much all the way from eastern Arizona up through northern Arizona. So, a little bit closer here, we can see a lot of that heavier activity just outside of the Snowflake area, passing right through Blue Ridge, down through Payson. And here's the I-17. So, that's why we're saying if you are up in the high country, maybe traveling home on this Memorial Day, you're going to run into some rain. Just south of the Flagstaff area, the heaviest activity still just in and around the Sedona area, now pushing a little bit further to the east. So, here we are across the valley. We've been staying mostly dry. You could see some of those showers and storms kind of dove as far south as uh Black Canyon City just outside of Lake Pleasant, but still stayed north to Cave Creek. What we were looking for are outflow boundaries. It's kind of like a half circle we would see come out of these, and that would mean we could see some gusty winds here across the valley. So, still the opportunity for that, but for the most part it now looks like a lot of this is kind of pushing up to the north and to the east. So, we'll continue to monitor these showers and storms. They should last for the next couple of hours, and then we're looking at dry conditions statewide for your Tuesday. Again, on the breezy side from another storm system passing just to our west. We'll stay with the mid to upper 90s the next couple of days, a little bit cooler 92 by Thursday and Friday until the triple digits make a comeback by Sunday and Monday.
