Mantzel’s approach elegantly bypasses standard architectural limitations by treating rigid masonry as a modular canvas for organic design. It is a masterclass in how grassroots engineering can achieve sophisticated geometric results through simple, calculated modifications.

All right, last pieces.
You guys need to go up there.
Which is a bit tricky because my scaffolding where I need it to be to be able to reach that area blocks my thingy holder from being directly in the center. It should be right here. I'm sitting in the center of the window right across from that door. So, yeah, this should be right here, but you know, there's not space for that.
So, I'll just have to make this a little bit longer and just do some estimations and it should be fine.
>> [sighs] >> Okay, I got two up.
They're in pretty good.
I am kind of nervous being up there cuz I'm like trying to concentrate on not bumping these or this cuz I don't want those to fall, but then I have to stand on the edge of the thing and I don't want to fall cuz it's kind of far.
All right, let's just keep going. Be careful.
Okay, four in place. I'm going to have to trim the edge of this right here, but I can do that after. All right.
I guess I should start thinking about how I'm going to deal with this hole.
Not deal with it. I mean, it's a feature. I'm purposely leaving a 5-ft hole there.
So, and around the edge of the hole I want a little a little wall that goes up.
And then a piece of fiberglass roof stuff on top.
I'm thinking I'll cut the piece of fiberglass roof stuff out of one of these pieces.
Cuz, you know, this is just kind of leftovers from something and blah blah blah. It doesn't matter.
And this top piece, you know, the edges are kind of messed up. So, maybe I'll just take the circle out of that one.
So, that covers that the top top. The wall or the the roof comes up like this, then there's the hole and I want like a cylinder there with some, you know, window holes so light can come in up there.
So, I need to make some kind of circular walls for that. Like a five 5-ft diameter circle, maybe that's No, somewhere around that tall. Yeah, like a foot-ish.
30 cm.
>> [clears throat] >> Yeah, I'll make like a Styrocrete something and I have the form for this, but that's not wide enough. Yeah, I could just make like a bunch of bricks kind of like this.
I actually like Yeah, like that size would be perfect.
And just make enough that they go around. It doesn't matter that they're flat.
But then the windows.
Do I make a bunch of bricks like that and just put holes in them?
Holes in all of them?
I could put a a brick, then a short brick, but that means I have to put a top and a Well, that's going to be annoying. I'd rather just make these with holes in them. So, maybe I'll Maybe I'll make these, but make them wider.
Yeah.
Out to there-ish.
It'll still go around 5 ft, all right.
And yeah, make like a decent size hole in the middle. Maybe an oval or something. I don't know.
I'm basically doing this.
Ignore the solar panel and the ladder.
Yeah, it's got a concrete No, I mean a fiberglass rooftop there.
And then you know, it's got these windows that they actually let a surprising amount of light into the third floor up there.
But this one it's going to be wider.
And I definitely want to have bigger windows cuz I want to be able to get up there. Now, it's going to be an 8-ft ceiling, but if you put a little step, you can step up and like look out the windows. And it's a pretty cool view.
You like you can see everything from up there. So, I definitely want to have that view, you know, for sniping when zombies show up and stuff like that. And I want to I want to do the fiberglass top because that means it's easily removable.
So, I can see out the top, you know, at night when there's cool stars and stuff.
And we keep joking about putting a small trampoline up on the second floor there.
Standing on the trampoline, like your head would be like at the ceiling, but they you know, you take off the fiberglass piece, then you'd have a 5-ft hole to jump out of.
Uh, it'd be mildly terrifying cuz you don't want to miss and fall off the roof. Anyway, we're probably not going to do that.
But maybe.
Ah, nice.
My son is making a a chess set of of bunnies.
All right, I need a hole.
Or maybe two holes.
All right, what do I have around here?
Hmm, well, that bucket of stuff is tapered.
So, it should be easy to pick up as long as the handle doesn't get in the stuff.
I'd have two holes like that.
Maybe an oval.
Or a long octagon. Just take off the corners.
Wait, I don't have to take off the corners. I could just make a rectangle.
All right, I guess that's fine. I don't know.
Is there something else I need to think about or is this that? I think that's totally fine.
I think those look pretty good.
Yeah.
I got eight of those. I'm pretty sure that's what I need.
I'm not entirely sure how strong they are.
All right.
I pick them up like that anyway.
I did have one of these break because I take them out a day after I put them in the mold and one day isn't really strong enough or long enough for the cement to get strong.
Um but you know, I can usually get them out and then set them aside and let them get stronger so I don't have to like, you know, wait a week to get the mold back.
But yeah, this one totally cracked.
And I think I can glue it back together with some spray foam and I have a can somewhere cuz I used it 2 days ago and I don't know where I put it.
Whatever, I can I'll just get it in place, cemented in, and then the cracks won't matter.
Okay.
Oh man, the sun is blasting your sausage today.
But check it out.
Yeah.
I got to say, man, this scaffolding has been amazing.
It's so good. All right, Jamie, don't fall off the side. Whoa.
