[00:00:00]Beneath the cathedral of Santa Maria Annunziata, the cathedral of Anagni, [music] rests the crypt of San Magno, one of the most extraordinary underground spaces of medieval Europe. Here, every column, every wall, and every ceiling preserve more than 700 years of medieval frescoes still fused into the structure itself.

[00:00:20]We are in Italy, >> [music] >> in the Lazio region, in Anagni, known as the city of Popes. During the Middle Ages, this place functioned as a political extension of papal power.

[00:00:30]Pietro da Salerno >> [music] >> led the construction of the cathedral between 1072 and 1104. When construction was completed, its consecration would take place at the hands of Pope [music] Paschal II. Beneath the main structure, the crypt of San Magno was [music] built, dedicated to Saint Magnus of Anagni, a bishop and martyr linked to the region's earliest Christian traditions. [music] Between the 12th and 13th centuries, medieval masters connected [music] to the Romano-Byzantine school transformed the underground into a visual archive of medieval Europe. Pigments were applied [music] directly onto wet plaster. As the walls dried, the paintings became part of the structure itself. And what we find here goes far beyond religion.
