This analysis effectively highlights the "iron triangle" of naval design, proving that theoretical stats mean little without a balanced approach to trade-offs. It’s a sharp reminder that in engineering, every gain in one area is a calculated sacrifice in another.

What if the British built a better Iowa? | USN Iowa vs HMS Lion | War on the SeaHinzugefügt:
The line gets uh cancelled in 1939 I want to say. Um on uh chief >> yeah AP full spot >> confirmed >> Iowa hard left rudder YOU OH COME ON finally inley >> triple hit. Oh, the beauty. The beauty.
>> Full left threader. Full left threader on lion. Also, >> just before just before he made his move, viewers, we needed that so freaking bad. Hello, valued viewers. I hope you're all doing very well. And welcome back to our latest what if World War II naval battle. So, HMS Lion was Britain's answer to everything the wars had taught them. Faster, better protected, more capable than anything they had built before. USS Iowa was America's answer to the same question.
Both ships carry nine 16-in guns. Both were built to dominate the ocean, but Lion never got to prove it. She was cancelled before she was finished. Iowa fought in three wars. So, the question isn't just which ship is better. It's whether 20 years of American combat experience counts for more than British engineering ambition. I personally think not, but we'll see. So today, Lion versus Iowa. Lion is heading west out of Scappa Flow, uh the top of my country.
Iowa is coming to meet him just over 30,000 yards apart. Iowa is going to be in the hands of Dirty today. So we're swapping around. Lion is going to be chief. So I'll take first paused orders from Lion, please.
>> H loose spot on 45° to starboard.
>> Starboard. I I smoke condition.
>> No smoke. I I Iowa please.
>> Our left rudder AP loose spot.
>> I already know. I already know exactly what both of you doing and I'm paused and I've done everything you wanted.
Right. Two beautiful sexy ships.
Viewers, we're going to go over the stats very quickly. We've seen both the ships before. Lion is 780 ft long, 105 ft in the beam, 46,000 tons or would have been. Crew 1750 men. Weapons guns 9 in uh sorry 9 16 in as the guys said by 45 long 40,000 y range. Feel free to interrupt me guys. 30 second reload time. Secondaries 16 5.3 in. Uh they're going to be dual purpose. 50 long 23,000 y 7.5 second reload time. Sensors and armor visual horizon 11 mi surface radar decent 27 mi. Well done. Armor belt 15 in. Deck 6 in. Mag 20 in. Turret 15 in bridge superructure 4.5 in. Trying to remember that viewers. Onto Iowa which we know very well. 890 ft long. 108 ft in the beam. Slightly bigger. 45,000 tons, obviously slightly lighter, 33 knots, a little faster. Crew, 1930 men.
Weapons, it's pretty much the same, but 50 long in the caliber and 42,000 yd range, slightly hotter shell, 30 second reload time. Secondary guns 25 in by short, 38 long, 18,000 yd range. Slower shell, 5second reload time. And finally, exactly the same. Same radar, same visible horizon. Armor, surprise, surprise, the same. 14 15 in deck, 6 1/2 in. When you leveling up Iowa mag the same 20 in turret higher 20 in bridge very high 17 in and superructure 1.5 in this match >> we normally put the poll up on a Friday finish it on a Monday play the battle like we've been told to play however when we did the live versus um Vanguard match we got so many people in the comments telling us we had to put line up against Iowa we have decided to take that as a vote you a request and here they are.
>> H4 spot off.
>> Done and confirmed. First hit on Iowa and it penetrated and I'm not biased at all. Smash her.
I'm reading a book at the moment. War for the seas. All about World War II preparation. Naval preparation. I've gone off aviation for a little bit. Back onto uh naval and great. It's I didn't realize two lines were laid down.
>> Front arc.
>> It'll be great. He always is in the ship. Loads. Loads.
>> I got one in your engines.
>> Yeah. So, he's obviously going to kite Lion and Lion's going to struggle because Iowa.
>> That's a Citadel hit.
>> Yeah, it's annoying. Yes. Yes. YES. YES.
A TRIPLE. WHERE IS IT?
>> FOUL.
>> Why did every single bullet hit there?
>> You really are blind sometimes.
>> I'm not. It's right there.
>> Check the rear arc on Lion.
>> Uh oh, you're out. Bloody.
>> Yep. Another 10° to star route.
>> God damn it.
>> Never mind. A horrible arc.
>> Yeah, we're just getting warmed up. It's hard to compete in that bloody highway.
He's got such good angles.
>> AP full AP full fire. Just trying to get this dude in. Okay, that's just about going to do you.
Okay, you good. Neither of you need your spot to run. That's hit. I'll take that.
Come on, give me something, baby. Good.
Cuz that's a weakness. That's a weakness. We know that's a weakness.
Well, we've done good gunnery so far.
Lion. So, problem we've got is her power her engines. We've got to stop her engines cuz she will kite us.
>> Aparo.
>> A narrow.
>> So, Lion was our cheaty busting battleship that we never got to build because >> Churchill decides to stop all battleship um production. Talked about that in past videos uh for the small ships cuz we need those to hit the convoys.
Yeah, you got it. I'd suggest a couple more degrees.
>> I would leave it there.
>> Put me on AP H narrow >> done. Solution is perfect.
>> The rudder.
>> We don't need that [ __ ] Hold on.
and she would have been Britain's second series of 16inch battleships after the after you're on Hero. Yeah. Okay.
>> All right. Both Ninja SP are on. Rangers are high. Solutions being lost. 5 minutes in. We've already got at huge range damaged ships. And that's because these ships are so damn good.
>> Good job.
Yeah. So, as Davros said, two lines were actually laid down. They were building them, which would have been so brilliant. But then Hitler decided to invade Poland like 10 years ahead of schedule. And also reading about the Germans, H39 and their Z plan. Really interesting stuff. They plan to have a big fat navy as well.
>> He did, >> but Mr. H was like, I want war now. And everyone's plans got scuppered.
>> Yeah. World War II could have been a very, very different war uh 10 years later.
um interestingly was redesigned so so many times during the war she was redesigned >> spot off.
>> So she had initial design that was being built and then during the war as different weapons came along so better torpedoes, better bombs, then glide weapons. Um she got redesigns to take in account all of those things. Uh, at one point she was going to have six 16inch guns and all the anti-aircraft guns in the world.
>> Line hit, line hit, line hit. But >> now I was very, very good at these long ranges, as we know. Um, lion, if she's going to have a chance, needs to push in, but she's going to take damage as she does. So, so it's a usual thing for the Royal Navy.
>> Those 1645s aren't as good as the 1650s.
>> You would usually also use your smoke if you wanted to close, but I was radar so good. Smoke almost almost doesn't affect it. It's so frustrating. I >> hate findings. It's miserable [ __ ] to fight against. What we need is a bit of luck. A few dice rolls. Hit her engine.
Hit her engine. Reel her in.
>> They're probably hit the engine >> cuz they're not armored because of the all or nothing scheme, right?
>> They are slightly armored.
>> Oh, yeah. They are. How about that?
Well, still drop down. Still drop down on them. Uh, who's got the best drop dropping power at the moment? It's going to be Lion's going to have a steeper rock, isn't it? It's got a colder shell, >> which is good. You want a colder shell like this, viewers, because it it comes down steeper, which which hits a minute and a half. Sorry about my voice today, viewers. Bit poorly, obviously, but we'll get through. He's live.
>> Flying to AP.
>> AP, right, finally. Let's get some damage done. Uh, so we are AB narrow now. Which is the most accurate ship so far? It feels like Oh, well, I don't Oh, I don't know. Oh, that was some legacy Hitting. Yeah. as the chief's been trying to drop HS on there to do damage and sometimes that does work absolutely brilliant >> AP4 was that and confirmed >> the other devastating weapon line has got on is those 15.3s um but it's getting into range about 20,000 y >> that secondary battery is much much better than I was >> but as we know getting 20,000 y away from my give a try a long gun viewers long gun faster shell bigger range >> what's the repair time on my rudder >> but hard to reload. Uh still a minute and a half. Not that you really want to turn anyway, but >> the line gets uh cancelled in 1939 I want to say. Um your solution on uh chief.
>> Yeah. AP full spot.
>> Iowa hard left rudder.
AH YOU COME ON. Finally >> triple hits.
>> Oh the beauty. The beauty.
>> Full left rudder. full on lion also >> just before just before he made his move. Viewers, we needed that so freaking bad. Right, that's going to slow him down a bit. It's going to slow him down. Um, you want your spotter on uh American.
>> Yep.
>> What a shot.
>> Spot on American. I like that.
>> Okay, he's going to switch sides. So, what he's doing is he's doing the translation viewers. So, he's going to switch his armor. So, annoyingly, that's going to be all fresh armor. But Lion's doing the same. Lion's taking a chance.
Seen the opening. Got the chance to turn to get his fresher sides cuz remember gray cell is a damage still. Ah, funnel.
Ah, damn.
>> Did you get full left rudder online?
>> I did not get full left. You want it now?
>> Yes.
>> Oh, sorry. I did. I am. It's just not turning.
>> It's because of your rudder.
>> You're do 18 seconds.
>> He's going to miss his window slightly.
Uh, battleship tactics. Best tactics in the world. Yeah, that's annoying. Fast turning ship. That's a massive advantage in a 1 v one. Anyway, at least we slowed his turn down a bit. It's under 50 knots.
>> It's really really >> That was so needed for just for basic survival.
>> A midship.
>> You got your turn, guy. You got your turn. All right, guns are turning. Not much going on at the moment. Everyone's guns are rotating. Lift these 1500 ton chunks of metal around.
>> Midship.
Done. Heading southwest. And well, they both know what they're doing. That's a switch and restart battle at 11 minutes in and 27,000 yards.
>> Lion 15° to starboard.
>> Uh, that is right. Uh, before you do that, can I tell you that you're going to be out of arc if you do that?
>> Yes, I know that.
>> All right. You're the boss. You're literally the boss right now.
>> Spotify.
>> Uh, AP narrow. Spot off.
>> Not bad.
>> Yeah, it's getting better. That big turn he did. bought him all the time he needed a minute >> long distinguished service in the in the uh United States Navy. World War II hazip uh did a lot of shore bombardments during the preparation of beaches for the Marines. Then Korean ball did pretty much the same but Iowa coast >> then became a missile boat in the 1990s.
Uh, >> look at the damage on the line.
>> Bridge.
>> Bridge hit on Iowa.
>> Shot. Good shot. Really good shot. That will slow it down.
>> What I needed Iowa straight west.
>> Basically, he's become ineffective uh with that bridge hit viewers. So, his bridge his bridge guys are full of splinters. He's he's got to just evacuate just for a minute to get everything repaired.
>> Lion straight west. Also, >> of course, >> some of the comments talking about how Lion is more of a South Dakota than Iowa. I personally would disagree just because of her um just because of her belt armor armor protection over Iowa.
I'd say they're about equal just emphasizing armor >> spot on loose.
>> Yeah, there was a late war design for a lion that had up to 16 in of armor uh beltwise at 8 in of deck armor.
>> That would be nice. Skip a few of these 16ers off. I was making she isn't trying to battle a wave of tomahawks at least.
But the bad news is cuz she did. She did carry on the horse, didn't she? You probably press these suckers back into service if they wanted.
>> They are kept in a condition where they could be.
>> All right. Now again, not as well. You could even do shaw bombardment if you really want. Why not? Might have his uses.
>> It would take an extensive refit because they've been stripped of most everything because of their museum status.
>> Yeah. Right. So, let me check. A loose spot. Check. You're heading west. Check.
You're making 23 knots. Me. Ah, damn Iowa. She's always gonna have that speed advantage. She's got her props back.
She's making 25 knots in the turn.
That'll be 30 knots in a minute. Anyway, you're back in fighting condition now.
Iowa, >> do me a favor. Don't jinx me like that again.
>> I will jinx you.
>> Iowa H loose spot fight, isn't it? We've just punched them in the nose and let them run away.
>> Was it 45° left? Yeah.
>> Yep.
>> I arc. I will do my best.
>> Use the rudder.
>> I I use the rudder. Excuse me.
>> Is well, he's turning now, so it's kind of irrelevant, but >> so AP loose. All right, let's just freaking jazz some random shells out there. And AP loose done.
>> At least I got fast turning turrets.
>> Yes, you do, don't you? And that's annoying. First turning turret. Shells on target quicker.
More tactically useful.
>> Bigger brother, bigger engines.
>> You want to level out?
>> Yeah, that'll do it. Just going to overturn by 45°.
>> Oh, >> okay. And yep, you're in. That's going to be pretty much perfect.
>> Solution, please.
>> Hey, uh, her solution is still bouncing a bit. A >> AP full spot. AP full spot fire and confirmed. All right, everyone's ah shot. Everyone's static. Thank you very much. Peck away at that uh that side.
Pecked away that side and I peck away that side. Now I wonder what's the better gun. What the Anyone know the shell weight of the British shells as compared to I was a little bit lighter about 400 pound.
>> Yeah, that's annoying. Blime what?
>> Repair time.
>> I mean half minute just on the flooding.
So they say >> two men >> annoying bro. You're making 25. You're making 28.
>> Uh the what? Sorry.
>> Reload.
>> Yeah. AP loose >> confirmed.
>> Lion AP narrow on off >> 26,000 y. Well done. You made it work.
Why is lion trying to get close? What's the >> secondaries?
>> Okay. Oh, I see you got that bracket where he can hit you and you can't hit him. Yeah, >> it's about 4,000 yards there between 20,000 and uh 15,000 16,000 where the Americans don't fire.
>> It's a tough one. It's quite He's got to close a lot, isn't he?
>> Oh, risk. It's all about risk management, viewers. He risks the wrath of those 2,700 shells. But someone's got to win. Uh they probably >> They probably can't beat each other at 30,000 y AP full spotter confirmed.
So rotation speed >> Iowa hard left >> lions actually should be traversing quicker uh elevation as well. Uh >> and I tell life they should be traing slower. 2.5° second a second.
>> It is, isn't it?
>> Yes.
>> Oh, I seem to have cooled lion's bluff.
See what happens.
>> Lion go to loose spot on >> AP loose spot on fire. Why is it doing that viewers? It helps spread because when it's turning, well, it's basically impossible to hit a P ship when it's turning like that. So, you're just increasing your chance of if you increase your spread of shell, more likely one's just going to tag him and the straighter and more predictable path, the lower your spread wants to be generally speaking.
Anyway, no serious damage on either ship. Your engine's back, your 26 knots, that's the best you can see 5. All is well, 26,000 y. So, what we got here is Iowa realized that Lion's going to get into range. So, he's calling his bluff and he's going aggressive. Now, he's got this you got this two-way tactic going on viewers and they're trying to Iowa AP full spot.
>> Check very tactical.
This was always going to be tactical unless there was lucky hits which there well not you know there's no no mag hits so far.
25,000 >> lion full rudder to starboard.
>> Interesting because he doesn't want Iowa's bluff to get too close to him now. So, he's got to now defend. Iowa's got better rate of fire 5 in. So, if he gets close and then you got to differentiate this to real battleship fights, viewers. Real battleship fights don't do this obviously cuz you don't get 1 v ones. 1 v1 ones are something very specific where I've got to kill you. I've got a set amount of minutes to do it. So, you're not going to see this happening in real life. In real life, it's going to be a very different tactic because you got different things to think about. But this is called >> No, no battleships going anywhere without le >> That's right. So, you just be tactical.
Wait for it. Call a destroyer.
>> I rev AP narrow.
>> He's going for a killing blow. 24,000.
Check. Check. Check. Now, will it pay off? She's fast. He's very fast. Uh, Miserel, but you're still turning.
Excuse me. You're supposed to be turning. No, you're not.
You just have to wait.
>> That's okay.
>> Can we see anything yet?
>> So, the gun design >> the Americans and the the Brits are quite interested.
>> Yes.
>> The Royal Navy went for consistency and accuracy with the rounds coming out those barrels. They wanted shells on target.
>> AP full start off.
>> The Americans of course just went for I think Jeremy Croton calls it.
>> Yeah, it is a little bit. Yeah.
>> Yeah.
quart of a ton heavier and they're firing quick uh a faster threat ending those barrels as well. So flying quicker gives you slightly distribution at the other end. Um but the impact is going to be immense.
>> You're going to put yourself out.
>> I was putting myself out. Um >> might be turning into it.
>> What was the line?
>> Front arc.
>> Perfect. No problem.
>> 10° to starboard. I I trying to pull away even more. Trying to keep IR out of that. Right. So you are AP full. No spot. You are >> AP narrow. No spot.
>> A lot better than I am. Spot on.
>> Yes. Had a good set of gunnery, hasn't it? Uh AP narrow spot on. Done.
>> Lion spot on.
>> All right. Here's some uh here's my also here. Ah, god damn it. No, it's on the other side. It's on the other side.
Talk baby.
>> That's also 25% of the secondary.
>> The secondary is firing. Can you see them go?
>> Yes, they are firing >> now. I was in that awkward phase where is in secondary range but not in her own secondary range. So, he's got to close 5,000 y like the clappers.
>> 5° to starboard. I I trying to keep Iowa away at every possibility. Let's check.
So, AP full spot probably the right thing to do. Oh, it's all about that number there. It's the only number that matters right now. She's going to line.
>> Mhm.
>> Your log is off now. I said that 2 minutes ago.
>> I just I haven't touched I haven't pressed anything. So, it is what it is.
Leave it.
>> Sorry viewers. Logs logs put the log is gone. Doesn't matter. We've played long enough without log to >> AP full spot off.
>> Uh, it might be worth talking to the dev about that to see if we can have a fix.
By the way, AP full spot off. AP full spot off fire confirm.
>> Yes, there is a modder who's done the log for us. It is available on Booard.
Uh, under the water on the sea channel.
>> Dive in there if you want that particular mod on the game. It is very useful. 25 minutes in. If you haven't already subscribed to us, folks, hit the bell. Make sure you've rung it. You'll get all the subscriptions coming through. We do three videos a week.
>> We love that. Do that, please.
>> Loose AP loose.
>> Confirmed.
>> About 3 months ago, I think Captain did a video on the magnetic guns, the rail guns.
>> Yeah, >> I think we worked out that they were firing and hitting stuff with about 60 megajles of energy. Iowa shells are hitting with 355.
>> Ah, isn't that hilarious?
>> Not just about speed.
>> Lion. is only 290.
>> That's crazy.
>> But that's the difference between uh very high speed light much lighter shell with the mag rails and very very heavy shells. A ton of shells.
>> That doesn't even count for the explosive in the warhead, does it?
That's just a chunk of metal.
>> No, I mean, yeah, by by this time there was the packing explosives within the AP shells.
Destructive.
>> Yeah, you got for me.
>> AP full.
>> Keep an eye on that. Remember that. Uh, AP full fire.
>> 20,000.
>> The cruiser tournament is getting closer and closer, folks. We've only got, I think it's two more matches to run in the whatifs. Uh, two more pole matches to do. We're going to >> going to do some cruiser stuff with those pole. So, keep an eye out for that. If you remember, you get to tell us what those pole matches should be.
>> Lion straight north.
>> L straight north. my eye. All right, good luck, guys. I got to go run to the office. Get the laptop fixed.
>> See you on >> lose spot on. If we lose >> done, >> constant decision-m going on here. How much damage do you take down >> 61?
>> Iowa is now in danger. This is the kill zone for lions 1645s.
Those 1650s have lost to their plunging effect. It's all about how much damage can he take to get what he wants, which is is 5 in. And opposite for this one.
How much damage can I do before I need to run away or or or hope for the best or whatever. We'll see.
>> At this range, I should be hitting more.
>> It's cuz we've seen it a million times.
It's the charge. The charge is always getting a good solution because of your smoke.
>> Yeah, smoke solution. Not on a nice broadside rail. It's that's you don't even really want to hit. You just want to get close. That's what you want to do. That's your plan. What's the efficiency against uh >> 90 and 96?
>> There's not much in it. It's we've done >> AP full spot on just disappointingly little against it against the Iowa.
>> One left kick on the rider.
>> I just starting starting this transition already viewers. Shot shot.
Yes. A turret is out of 2 minutes. Not that he's hitting anywhere at the moment, so doesn't really matter. The scanner off my yellow on the bow.
>> Yep. Just check the repair time.
>> Yeah, he just I just put it back there anyway, so it wasn't matter. 90%.
Yeah, sometimes just luck of the rolls of the devices are bad. I always run out of luck.
80,000 y. You're pretty much in dirty question mark.
>> Check for me.
>> Is she firing? Is she reaching with a little guy? Look at they're all reaching. Let me let me >> 18,000 >> 18,000. So he needs it needs half up half a whatever it is damage.
>> Yeah, both ships got uh lots of damage parties. I think they got eight damage parties each.
>> No, they got seven based on the tonnage.
Seven. They're the same basically is what we care about.
>> Yeah.
>> So damage controls parties run out at six spanners, but they can actually get more than that, >> but they just don't show up as damage parties on the graphic.
>> Just that guy. Right.
>> You must be firing now, Dirty. I would make your move if I were you. Only so much you can do this for.
>> Well, now that my bridge is dead, I'm pissed.
>> Oh god. Yeah, >> that's unlucky. Right.
>> Actually, you've only lost 3% efficiency for that, which is amazing.
>> Yeah, I don't know how that happened, but either way, he's almost in fighting shape. 20 seconds and he's the best he's going to get. He's in secondary range. I assume they're firing.
>> That bridge has got 17 in of armor on it, so inconsequential to get through.
>> You got to make 5.3. those long long range high straight north away.
>> The fight's on now. He's done what he wanted. He got within 18,000 yard range.
Now, is he damaged enough?
>> Smoke off.
>> Smoke off. I I now a fight. Let's check everyone. You are AP narrow spot. You are >> AP narrow spot off.
>> AP narrow.
>> My spot back on when you get a chance.
>> Done. Everyone's golden. Everyone's golden. Bollocks. Here we go. The big fight.
What did I hit online?
>> Bow bow area, right? Let's double check on Iowa >> in. You're now >> done.
You've now optimized and you got your secondary >> 88. It's pretty It's not bad. It's, you know, you've had to obviously take some to get here, but I've seen worse places.
>> Battle 17,000 chance.
>> Oh god. AP narrow >> AP narrow fire optimized >> damage.
>> Yeah, that's bad.
Do not want any of that [ __ ] Come on, fight. Fight >> those five entries.
>> We knew we knew how accurate those suckers are.
>> Yeah, I hate that [ __ ] >> Yeah.
>> Come on, mag hit. We need a mag hit right now.
>> Shut up.
>> The the hit log's back on. It has to be >> No, it's 2 minutes behind. No, it's not.
I don't know. I'm confused. Yeah, I think I think it's back up today though.
>> All right, we're back in. Yeah, all the gray.
>> At this point, Dev, you don't even have to check the uh solutions.
>> All fires just dropped right off.
>> Look at all those yellow.
>> How's my spot?
>> It's It's off and you don't need it.
>> Everyone's optimized.
>> No one can do anything now. It's It's in God's hands.
>> Come on. Some more dice rolls. Just the power of those 5 in when you're getting.
>> Do not jinx us.
>> I want to though. Oh my god.
>> That doesn't look good.
>> Oh god.
>> Oh hello.
>> Yes.
>> Check scanners on the back line.
>> Okay, buddy.
>> Take one off the car or the director rear director.
>> There you go. There you go.
>> Ryan really can't take a hit.
>> Yeah, it's annoying, isn't it? A water.
>> We're not doing any damage now, Jordan.
>> She's got expelled on that side, but it >> Yeah, we'll have to look at the flotation on the some of the British ships cuz they do seem a bit low compared to some of the others.
>> Come on. One bullet here. Does any bullet are your secondary?
>> I am not going >> saying that she has got six flooded sights >> and uh Chief is still driving a full speed ahead.
Uh, got me five knots.
>> And then I need a I need a spanner on that front turret.
>> Is line taking a picture? Is that >> No, >> she's just not getting hits on IO anymore.
>> I'm not sure she can fire.
>> I think that's the angle. She's angled downwards.
>> Full turn.
>> [ __ ] >> And reduce the speed by another five knots.
>> I would go full reverse at this point.
>> Do it the other way. The other way. the other way.
>> Perfect. Well, hot >> AP loose.
>> So, quite a few uh well, one particular value in particular keeps saying that we need to change our captains cuz they don't know how to charge in. I think we've probably disproved that our captains know when to charge in. The difference is they don't charge in every single time.
>> Arrow spot on fire.
>> I say charge in.
like 12 miles.
>> Yeah, but none of those cells have come back, are they? All that armor is now completely >> That's not the point. I'm talking about the flooding. That's his problem right now.
>> I think the problem right now is your 5 in are just smacking him every 2 seconds and then your 16 in are smacking him every 30 seconds.
>> It's every 5 seconds, not 2 seconds.
Guns loaded. Ready. Fire.
>> Fire broadside.
>> Fire broadside. Ow.
16 seconds flight time damage.
>> Okay, the flooding's under control.
>> FD's hit.
>> I don't want row spot off.
>> AP narrow spot off fire. Okay, this we're going to give face some nice armor towards that side.
Belt armor just hasn't done the job today. The shells are too big.
>> Too puku. Yeah, same that they increased the armor by 2 in on some of the designs for the belt and by another 3 in from the deck armor. Um, not particularly against >> big guns, but the big flying bombs that were coming in the glider bombs.
>> Nothing.
Oh, Jesus Christ.
>> Oh, that's a big one.
>> Ouch.
>> That was not nice.
>> Midship. Come on. Just need those fronts in, please.
>> So, thanks. We do actually have a working Royal Navy fleet now. Uh it's done a lot of work to optimize if you like the armor. There's a few things that uh had been left out on them. Uh we do now have some protection on the stern especially.
>> So the big battleships don't lose their props and rudders quite as readily as they did do.
>> But there's only so much you can do against 1650s.
I think it spots off the tempo and she deleted the whole hillside.
>> Put a spanner on that. Uh, take it off the bow tire. Put it on the dark port side secondary.
The bottom one. Bottom one. Bottom one there.
That's cardboard. Done. I did it. They probably take it right off.
>> Yeah, we don't think we got too many guns or firing online at the moment for whatever reasons.
>> Secondaries needs folks is like we might run a tournament of the what if ships as well. Let us know if that seems of interest to you.
Uh so the schedule will sort of go cruiser tournament followed by tournament.
Damage on.
>> Ow. Sal is so [ __ ] accurate.
>> Ow.
It's taken 40 minutes. It's taken tens of hits, but lying is suffering.
>> Give me full right rudder >> damage on Iowa.
>> Nothing.
>> That's two more 16 hits. Uh, three.
>> Check.
>> Oh my god. Just thought off narrow AP narrow chief to the end. Not giving up.
>> Chief is feisty. I'll give him that.
>> Dang, this thing's so damn accurate.
>> He's got a V Navy ship to fight. He's got to fight to the end.
>> Anybody interested in what the testing showed of this battle?
>> Exactly the same as this.
>> Yeah.
>> Lion wins.
>> Uh, if you started at 25,000, it's a 50/50 battle. How interesting.
>> We started at 30,000. It's about a 7030 for Iowa because of the range.
>> Yeah. Well, we did. This was 30, wasn't it? So, >> yeah.
>> Yeah.
>> We We know those 1650s are the best guns in the game. The best guns ever on the scene.
>> Spanner on that turret.
>> Uh, take it off the prop.
>> And the value viewers corrected me.
Actually, it's a good point. Iowa never had a computer >> guided guns. It was always a mechanical computer on Iowa. So, this is all done with click, click, click, crunch, crunch, crunch of numbers.
>> Yeah, but your admiral is not going to live to see this battle win. He's dead.
>> Yeah, we did get that bridge hit.
>> Thank god I was on my smoke break.
>> He was in the jam.
>> Hey. Yeah, >> there we go. It's like that.
>> Yeah.
>> 44 minutes.
>> 44 minutes.
>> All of a sudden, the fighting just disappears and it's level >> until the last 10 minute. Yeah, that's a bit weird. Until the last 10 minutes. It you It was a dice roll who was going to win. Then Iowa did a charge in got relatively lucky that she didn't take a huge amount of damage cuz often it's lost in the charge as we've seen before.
The charge paid off. She unleashed the broadside and all of a sudden just the rate of fire, weight of fire compared to lion for some reason was just so heavy.
It was crazy. Whether it was dice rolls, whether it was what, I don't know. It was amazing.
>> Yeah, >> it was it was the accuracy and he didn't take any lucky hits. If you remember the first time the the Iowa fought a uh Vanguard, she lost because she charged in.
>> She charged in and she unlucky hits, she got a B turret taken out and that was the end of her.
>> Yep.
>> Yeah. I got the turret hit, but I couldn't take it out.
>> Oh, look at you haven't got far to go down, Chief. So, you might get some escapees. There's at least that. There you go, viewers. Um, I really didn't know which that that was going to go until the last thing. So, good steering, everyone. It was nice watching the old school battleship tactics that we used to have. Uh, anyone else?
>> Secondaries helped me on that one.
>> They really did sometimes, especially with those those five those fast firing five inches just turn the battle, don't they? Quite last look at his damage.
just it's >> like taking out Chief's secondaries helped a lot on that one.
>> Yeah, but that was after I started my turn. It was all the flooding that caused me to turn.
>> It's not really buoyant, is it?
>> It's possibly something you need to look at is the Royal Navy ships do seem to sink quite often uh when they get minimal amount of flooding compared to some of the other big ships.
>> The two biggest of the What If series are coming up in the next two What If battles. Uh we have uh this one to go up and then we'll be recording the last two battles of what if series on Wednesday.
Look out for those folks. Viewers, hope you enjoyed it and bye-bye.
