Failure to timely diagnose and treat infections, even from minor wounds like scabs or small cuts on the foot or ankle, can rapidly progress to full-blown infections causing tissue necrosis and bone infection (osteomyelitis), ultimately leading to amputation; medical professionals should recognize early warning signs such as redness, swelling, and warmth to prevent this progression.

One of the most common amputation cases I see as a medical malpractice lawyer is failure to timely diagnose and treat an infection. And this can start with something as simple as a scab or a little wound on the foot or on the ankle that turns into something that becomes infected, whether that's reddened or um or swollen or whatever, warm to the touch, and these signs, although subtle, are not picked up and acted on. And then all of a sudden it can progress to a full-blown infection that can spread and cause tissue to become necrotic or dead, and even go so far as to infect the bone, which is called osteomyelitis.
And it's amazing to me how quickly this can unfold, and many folks who aren't medically trained wouldn't know that that's happening, such as the patient or their family member, but the doctor should know. And I've got multiple amputation cases right now that are concerning in this way.
