This video demonstrates how to design and read column structural drawings for spans up to 19 ft 9 in, covering column sizing (13.5 in × 13.5 in), reinforcement details (8 bars of 5/8 inch diameter with 3/8 inch stirrups at 3-inch spacing), concrete cover (1.5 in), and lap splice requirements (minimum 50d), using a three-story residential building as the example case.

How to read Column Structural drawing?Added:
Hello guys, welcome back to Civil Engineers YouTube channel. In this short video lecture, I would like to guide you for column steel structure design for the spacing of up to 19 ft and 9 in. This is the clear span of two columns.
So, what should be the size of column and size steel reinforcement details, etc. Let's get started, guys. If you are new on this channel, so you may like the video and subscribe the channel for Civil Engineering updates. This is C1.
It means column. This is size. Size of the beam uh the column is 13.5 in by 13.5 in.
by 13.5 in.
And you can see the long span is 19 ft 9 in.
And the shorter span is 15 ft.
The size is same for both. You can see this is C1, C1, C1, and C1 C1. All column size dimensions and steel reinforcement is same. This is column plan. And you can see this is column C details. You can see clearly.
If you see, guys, here, this is center line. Dotted lines can show you the center line. So, from one center line to the other other center line, the span is 18 ft 7.5 in. And the shorter span is 13 ft 10.5 in. And from one corner or edge to the other one, which is 15 ft, and this one is 19 ft and 9 in. So, guys, let me guide you for the sections. Where you can see the size of the column is 13 13.5 in by 13.5 in.
Where we have, guys, let me focus the camera and let me zoom it a little bit for you people to know it properly.
I focused the camera. Now, guys, you can see here we used eight bars and the dia is five sutar. Eight numbers of bars and the dia is 5 by 8. It means five sutar diameter.
You can see clearly.
Where guys you can see the stirrup, so they used three sutar 3 by 8 in s.
With the spacing of 3 in center to center.
You can see clearly.
And the concrete cover is 1.5 in for all sides.
This is concrete cover.
If you see guys hooks are bent on 135° with the length of minimum 3 in, so this is section A.
So here guys you can see this is the section A specially for this place.
If you see we have the second section which is called section B which is specially this point.
Where we have overlapping. Overlap one steel rod to another one. So guys you can see everything is same only you can see the empty circle where it can show you the overlapping for one to another bar. Bar. On the top of this you can see which is called beam and this is roof.
And from this ground floor guys you can see from this ground floor to the top level the height is 11 ft and 6 in because thickness of the slab is 6 in s. And from the slab to the floor clear height is 11 ft. You can see guys.
Now guys here the spacing is if you see the spacing is 3 in. s.
The stirrup spacing is 3 in s and five sutar.
Okay? And the ties dia is three sutar.
And the all longitudinal bar dia is five sutar 5 by 8 in. s.
So here this is called lap splice or lapping length. And the lapping length should not be less than 50 D.
It means 50 multiply by for example if you are using for example 20 mm diameter so it means the lapping should be what?
You can see sorry for this.
Okay.
50d lapping. It should not be less than this. 50 multiplied 20 20 mm it means this is die of bar 20 mm. So the lapping length should be 600 mm. So now let me focus out the camera.
And I zoomed out okay. So guys these are the details and specially this is a design for three story a residential building.
We have factor of safety in this.
So this is a short video but very important for you people to know about these things which I've discussed in front of you. Thanks for watching. See you in next video.
Goodbye.
