What If Anguirus Lived? - The Rival, Ally & FriendAdded:
Amidst the ruins of an ancient civilization within Godzilla King of the Monsters, lay the body of Monsterverse Inger Gearas, an Easter egg to fans of the franchise of Godzilla's oldest rival, ally, and friend. Which begs the question, what if this deceased Titan did not perish eons ago? What if Monsterverse and Gearas lived? Before I can fully dive into this scenario, I'll need to fill in two very large yet important holes in Monsterverse lore.
First and foremost, what was this gearus like? And second, what were the circumstances of his death? Well, the first question is actually the least difficult to piece together. So far, the Monsterverse hasn't portrayed any Toho Kaiju in a way that would seem out of character from their most common interpretations. For starters, Mothray is most often portrayed as a guardian of the earth and allied to humanity. The Monsterverse's interpretation is no exception to this. And while Legendary's version of the character is not a perfect one to one, like with the lack of the Shoubagin at the Scardian side, there are plenty of subtle references or homages to this core part of her character. And this adherence to the past has effectively laid the groundwork for all Toho Kaiju that have appeared so far. King Gdora remained a civilization ending invader from space. Rhdan, a battlehungry rogue. Even Mecha Godzilla could just be seen as fusing the robot's usual adversarial role like in his original debut film with that of Kiru.
Tweaks to design or new powers aside, they're all relatively faithful adaptions. No modoks or task masters to be found here. Why all this matters is that essentially keeps guard rails on how different this version of Angus could possibly be. Meaning Monsterverse Angaras would undoubtedly be a reflection of his past self. So who exactly is Angiras? What are his core characteristics? Well, he's a tenacious Ankiliosaur like Quadriped, who first appeared in 1955. A radioactive monster who Dr. Yamane states is utterly despising violent monsters, leading to his confrontation and untimely death by the Showa era second Godzilla. Despite the first version's death, a later incarnation of Angurus went on to become Godzilla's most reliable ally in the Showa era. A friendship which makes sense as by this time in the early '7s, Godzilla had moved from a city destroying villain to a world protecting savior. A violent beast, he was no longer. This means Monsterverse Ingeras would likely be a protector class Titan, a one-time enemy turned ally once the alpha of Earth's more noble personality outshined his violent tendencies. So, now that we know how this version of the character would have been classified and acted, one must now wonder how Monsterverse Ingeras perished. And thanks to knowing his core personality traits and where his body lay, Monsterverse and Girus likely shared the same fate of his 1955 incarnation. but simply he died from a violent beast. We know the destroyed civilization worshiped Godzilla but also attempted to control some titans. If these titans rebelled and were destroyer class titans like Cam Amazon for instance, then one can only imagine what devastation they'd bring to their old masters. Now you might be wondering, could Godzilla have been one of the civilization's destroyers? Possibly meaning he'd be Angier's killer. And my gut says no. For one, Godzilla seems to be fond of the city and structures like it. So much so, we know he turned it into his own layer.
It would be strange for Godzilla to hold in high regard a place which he had a clawed hand in destroying. So to answer my earlier questions, Moniverse and Girus, a protectorclass titan with a hatred of violent titans, perished either at Godzilla's side or at least in his good graces, failing to stop one or more destroyer class titans from destroying the ancient civilization. To dispel any uncertainty and at the request of YouTube Alpha Titan member Travesty who requested this scenario, we'll assume Camzots was the culprit just to give some identity to the unknown original killer. Thus, to change Monsterverse and Gearas's fate, we simply have luck beyond his side.
Perhaps he evades a fatal blow by Camzot. Or perhaps Godzilla's might is just enough to save him this time round, even if the civilization around them crumbles to dust. Either way, the reptile lives to fight another day, leading to the obvious question of how the Monsterverse would be inextricably changed from this point onward. What likely isn't altered by any noticeable degree is King Gdora's arrival on Earth and atunement in ice. While Angaras would no doubt help reign in the Hydra's world conquering ambitions, I can't see Angaras fundamentally changing the battle's outcome in Antarctica. He's strong. How strong I'll detail later on, just not strong enough to be enough to permanently end King Adora if the likes of Godzilla and Shimo couldn't get the job done in the original timeline.
Likewise, the Scar King's War wouldn't fundamentally change. The Crimson Tyrant's speed and durability, at least a physical blows, should ensure he lives to scheme another day. Shimo, by contrast, is just too great a powerhouse for Angaras to realistically have a shot at bringing down, no matter how tenacious he might be. So, like the Scar King, she likewise finds herself trapped in the Hollow Earth subterranean realm.
Those events said, "Our first real point of divergence occurs in 1100 BC.
Phoenicians who arrived on ancient Japanese shores bear witness to a battle between Leviathan and Thunder Beetle between Dagon and Muto Prime only to be interrupted when Angiras jumps to Dagon's defense. See, Enirus didn't just stumble upon this encounter. We know from Godzilla Aftershock that this or possibly past Prime successfully hunted other Godzillaas. When Enirus senses this Prime's awakening, only two Godzillaas remain for the matriarch to target. Both nonviolent, benevolent beasts, which Angiras would naturally find a kinship with. One is the Alpha of Earth. The other is less experienced and powerful. Prime's target wouldn't be hard to figure out. So, Dagon and Ingeras clash against Prime, turning what was once a one-sided beatdown into an arduous war of attrition. A battle Muto Prime would not want. Because while strong, perhaps even stronger than Godzilla, Muno Prime's battle plan is about avoiding direct prolonged conflict as much as possible. Usually, she blitzes her opponent with overwhelming strength, implants her brood, and retreats. Even against Godzilla, Prime fought him numerous times to wear him down and gained power before she committed to a final confrontation. Now, picture her here. An easy battle against surprised prey made arduous because another Titan decided to interrupt. A Titan who's too stubborn to stay down, whose spike shell can withstand her unmatched strength. and an annoyance who keeps interrupting every time she attempts to infect Dagon. At some point, Prime's tactics would need to change.
She would need to realize her target would need to change. Thus, the kid gloves come off. Dagon's spines are shattered via sonic screech. Prime mortally wounds the giant, then turns her attention to the pesky ankulosaur.
After pummeling in Giras with the same frantic energy Kong would display nearly 3,000 years later on evolved Godzilla.
And Girus goes still long enough to be infected by Prime's new brood. Her mission accomplished. Muto Prime retreats and Geras cursed to suffer the same fate of Dagon. Except here fate would have other plans. While a certain death sentence for most titans and gears shockingly would survive the encounter, survive the brood. And to explain how, I'm going to go on one final tangent to explain why Monsterverse and Gears looks like that and not like this. An essential trait in the Monsterverse is that every Titan has some varied power.
Godzilla breathes atomic fire. Molten magma flows through Rodan's veins.
They're all not flashy or extremely powerful. Like behemoth's special power is fertilization of soil, but for the most part, they're unique quirks, separating titans from mega fauna. Enter Angeras, whose best known special ability is a sonic screech, a trait shared by not one but two already established titans, Muto Prime and Camods. While there is nothing wrong with a third Titan with this sonic roar ability, on a meta level, I believe the people in charge of the Monsterverse would opt for another route to make Angirus more unique. At least more unique than a Titan whose special ability is that he can roll into a ball.
Cut to GMK, at least the original script by Susuke Ko. In it, Angaras was not only meant to be one of three Guardian monsters, he was supposed to emit an aura of sheer cold. the inverse to Baragon's scrap superheated body. So, while Angier technically never used his frigid aura on screen, that's the unique ability I'll be sticking with for this Monsterverse incarnation. And to sew the Ankliosaur into the Monsterverse lore just a bit tighter to explain this gift of Frost, we'll have him as a distant descendant of Shima, like what Doug is theorized to be for Godzilla.
essentially a titan who can harness the sheer cold of his ancestor, just not the frostbite breath. Which means shortly after Mutoo Prime infects her young into the Enklossaur, she gets to listen to their distant screams as her young are frozen solid. And while Prime may seek revenge or want to infect a new batch of her young into a living host, she'd likely have exerted too much energy to attempt another battle. Considering Dagon's death means the only reliable monster left for her to prey upon is Godzilla. Now, let's say Muto Prime waits decades, perhaps a few centuries before making her move, using that time to heal and siphon natural radioactive deposits. If she attacks Godzilla, the Matriarch would likely be crushed rather quickly. There are no nuclear power plants to absorb in this ancient world of man. No easily accessible deposits of radiation that aren't claimed by other titans. Prime can't rely on the same successful strategy like she did in the modern day because Godzilla has the far more rich radioactive den to rejuvenate in after every encounter. If Prime gets bold in a straight 1v one, Godzilla has the experience, durability, and firepower to stop her for good. And that's without Angeras, who likely wants some vengeance for Dagon. Without her brood, the Mudos wouldn't create the tragedy which befell John Jira in 1999 or sparked Gay in 2014. But shockingly, those are minuscule changes compared to the world altering ramifications and Gearus unintentionally set into motion all because of one seemingly inconsequential detail where Dagon died.
Originally, Dagon perished from the muto larva siphoning the life out of him within his lair in the Philippines. In this timeline though, Dagon dies on Kyushu in the open on a populated wells settled island. Radioactive fallout from the corpse may benefit the local flora, spurring unimaginable growth like what happened after the female muto left Las Vegas. But in this instance, we know what radioactive power lay inside Dagon was still dangerous to humans after thousands of years. Because of this, I can see Daigon's resting place being a sacred land, a grave too dangerous for locals to visit due to lingering radiation, but a location man, specifically 20th century governments, would look at with great interest, especially after other Titan sightings like those involving the ion dragon or Godzilla. Sure, Shawn, Ko, and Bill may still be the trio which puts the pieces together, discovering the greater monster verse, but I doubt Monarch comes into existence in the same way. By now, thanks to Dagon's corpse, Titans may have been thought of as extinct creatures by the general public. Kind of like the giant squid in real life, large animals which at one time roame the Earth, but are surely no longer around.
Then a few sightings later, everyone is taken by surprise when they're revealed to be still stalking the planet. Now, could a Titan like Yamato Noachchi absorb Daigon's lingered radiation? We do know, after all, that Titan calls Japan home and might see Daigon's corpse as a radioactive snack. Yes, he could indeed. And in that scenario, Asian history likely spirals into something unrecognizable. Because if people could get close to Dagon's remains, close enough to say create bone powder from his skeleton for medicinal or personal use, imagine the black market demand. We see this exact scenario in Pacific Rim with the kaiju black market run by Hannibal Chow. Except here, what people would be mixing with herbal recipes or immortality dishes is a radiated Titan bone powder. While theoretically this could imbue people with superhuman health, my money is that at best it gives people radiation poisoning, at worst they join Dagon in the afterlife.
And all it takes is one prominent figure or court from Japan, Korea, or China to try some Dagon powder for East Asian history to be inextricably altered. So, to avoid wiping out Japanese history because an emperor or shogun decided to try some Dagon dust, I'm opting for the first scenario. A scenario where Dagon's bones remain radioactive, allowing world governments and then eventually the public to learn that monsters exist decades ahead of the original timeline.
And while I could go over such a scenario with great depth, for the sake of refocusing on the star of this video, I'll just summarize some general trends.
The Skull Island expedition likely wouldn't experience the same disastrous results as in the original film, as there's no need to prove monsters exist.
The mission is merely reconnaissance without any deployment of bombs to stoke a certain Guardians wrath. So, no Kong Rampage, no release of Ramarak. Preston Packard gets his win after Vietnam and likely no fatalities occur, meaning Bill Randa remains in charge of Monarch, in charge of a rump intelligence agency that may have some international assets, but is wholly subservient to the United States military's demands. And speaking of Randa, as he grows older and more jaded, his hatred of monsters tied to the betrayal from the woman he loved, I can't see him rebelling against his military overseers when their hostile interests against the Titans are made clear. A policy his eventual predecessor would likely continue when Bill Randa eventually retires of old age. While Monarch still oversees the Titans, studying them like in the original timeline, far greater emphasis is made in creating weapons to counter these uncontrollable beasts. Would this be effective? Likely no. But it would set the groundwork for a far younger Walter Simmons to create Apex. And just to stress again, Monarch would likely be US centered here with other major nations creating their own agencies to monitor and study Titans. A red monarch during the Cold War would just be one of many around the world. So, getting back to the monsters, what is the next big event? Well, I see two possibilities.
Without the Mudos to appear in 2014 or Prime to show up in 2015, the major cataclysm I'd wager still happens in this timeline revolves around King Gdora. Either Alan Jonah attempts to reset the world by releasing the largest titans he can find, like the affforementioned Frozen Hydra, or Apex's weapons development causes a vicious feedback loop. Weapon tests on Titans cause those titans to attack humanity, leading to more tests, then more attacks. You get the idea. Gdora could be a guinea pig for mind control by Apex scientists, or the subject of some experimental weapons. Imagine many proton beams slicing into Gdora's hide.
All the while, the hydra siphons that power to rebuild his strength to break free of his icy tomb and destroy the insects which dare to experiment their tools of war upon him. Of the two, I'm going with the latter, just know that either possibility is likely in this timeline. So, Gdora breaks free, battles Godzilla in the Arctic, and then moments later is engulfed in a green haze left in the oxygen destroyer's wake.
Remember, Monarch is far more closely tied to the military and Apex in this timeline. And what better vessel would there be to deploy the Oxygen Destroyer in a pinch than the Argo, a craft meant to respond to monsters? You may think there wouldn't be time or that the military wouldn't unleash a super weapon with survivors nearby. For the former note, without the military actively attacking Gdora and Godzilla never getting that post204 buff, a weaker King of the Monsters and more bold King Gdora turns the original short bout into a prolonged conflict. For the latter note regarding survivors, do you think King Gdora would really leave any, especially after all the experiments? My money is on no. What was once apathy or playful intrigue of humanity is now sheer animosity. With no one alive at the site and having gained all the time needed to deploy the weapon, the oxygen destroyer is deployed into Antarctica. King Gadora retreats. Godzilla seeks refuge within his underwater layer and a new alpha call quakes the world, unleashing titans in mass. But two titans race to oppose this new world order. Mothra and Angiras. Mothra likely seeks allies within the Monarch, at least those in the agency which know the Titans are generally good for the Earth. A small but important fraction of the agency with notable members like Vivian Graham and the Russells. Mr. N Mrs. Russell just to be specific as in this timeline they never lose their son meaning Emma doesn't go mad from grief. You might notice a few names missing like Dr. Eileen Chen and Dr. Ishiro Zerzawa. Each is likely researching Titans, but with Monarch shell of its former self and less international, they're likely integral parts of Titan research agencies within China and Japan, respectively. Anyway, this leads to an interesting dilemma. Who sacrifices themselves to jumpstart Godzilla without Sarazawa here? Leave your thoughts below on which you think would accept that one-way ticket, but my money is on Mark Russell. Check out my full reasoning in this grayshot note above, but the TLDDR is that I think Mark would believe Emma to be a greater figure in their children's lives than himself. So, as Mark supercharges Godzilla to get him back into the fight, let's refocus on Angaras. When King Gadora broke free of his tomb, Angaras would beline it in his direction to help Godzilla. But with Ankalosaur's domain being Alaska, specifically near the Axis movie opening we see in Monarch Legacy of Monsters season 1, he'd likely be half a world away. Just as an alpha call awakens titans across the globe, including an old rival who soarses out of the San Andreas fault, Camzots with the bat pledging loyalty to King Gadora and the Titan being in gears his way from Alaska to the Atlantic. I can't imagine the Ankulosaur missing this opportunity for some payback. So, Monster Versing Gearas takes on Camzots, who I should note again was the reptile's original killer in this scenario. But does that mean he'll win this vicious 1v one? A rematch a few thousand years in the making.
Apologies for the interruption, but by far most of you are not subscribed. To stay up to date with the newest releases, please consider doing so.
Thank you. While in regard to strengths, Camzots does have plenty. Unlike in Gearas in this timeline, the bat does have a sonic scream which gives him range. The ability to fly ensures far greater mobility and matching Kong's brute strength likely ensures Camzoth is stronger. Strong enough to hoist Angaras skyward before releasing him into freef fall. An impressive list of advantages only surpassed by the counters Monster Verse Ingeras possesses for this fight.
Consider for a moment Kamaz's aerial and strength advantages. Yes, the bat could lift in gears high into the air for a devastating drop, but our spiky friend has a perfect counter. He simply needs to curl into his thunderball or in this case blizzard ball state to essentially absorb the eventual impact with planet Earth. Also consider on the ground, Cameots would be hardressed to do damage to a quadriped with that massive spike shell. On the flip side, Camzots doesn't have armor, meaning it'll be far easier for Enirus to inflict wounds on the devil with his claws or thagizer than vice versa. And the bat's wings are shredded any further than they already are. How long until Camzots is grounded, even for a short time? Forced to fight Angaras in a domain suited to him. All this is to say, sure, a Camzot in his prime may have used his screech, strength, and mobility to best a Giras, but in the modern day where both are experienced titans when it comes to combat, and Giras' greater durability and close quarter traits ensure that in this battle, Camzots will be the one who ends up a skeleton. So, with Angus victorious in Godzilla supercharged, do we see the pair take the fight to King Gadora in Boston? Absolutely not. While Alan Jonah may be watching the unfolding chaos from his bunker, maybe enjoying a bit of popcorn at the site, remember Emma Russell wouldn't be at the EOTterrorist side, which means Madison Russell isn't able to escape with the Orca and call King Gadora. In this timeline, Emma is still loyal, at least to this Titan positive splinter group of monarch that's found Godzilla. Luring Kingdodora to another city along the coastline would just inflict greater casualties due to the category 6 storm.
They need to lure the dragon away to a depopulated region so that Godzilla can engage his old rival for the title of king of the monsters and spare those helplessly dying against the dragon's wrath. And where is that location?
Greenland. I promise I'm not trying to be topical. Greenland's sparse population of 50,000ish could be evacuated far more efficiently than the millions living in coastal metros along the eastern seabboard, making it the perfect battleground compared to luring the hydra 2 well anywhere else. Thus, the frozen region would become the battleground for Godzilla, Mothra, and Ingeras to clash against King Gdora. And in this 3v1, the hydra may be the strongest titan on the field. However, greater strength will not help in a fight where he's constantly blindsided from every angle. Mothra from above and Gearus from below. All while Godzilla keeps up the frontal pressure. Kingodora would simply find himself always on the back foot against three extremely capable and experienced titans. Able to push back a single Titan, maybe two, merely for the third to dampen any momentum the invader might be able to claw together. Luck wouldn't be on Gdora's side either here. With this occurring in at best a large town, the false alpha can't siphon the local power grid like he did in Boston. If the trio can act in time, they likely can inflict enough damage upon the Hydra's wings to ensure King Gdora can't retreat to fight another day. Perhaps Angarus' sheer cold can make the membranes of Gdora's wings more brittle, or Mothur's webbing can restrict Gdora's movement. However, based on what happened in Antarctica, I think the moment King Gadora feels the battle is lost or turning decisively against him, he's going to beat a retreat. Most Titans on the planet serve him after all. All he needs to do is wait for his reinforcements to arrive to turn the odds to his favor. So, King Gadora retreats, ascending into the high atmosphere, merely to run headirst into Rhdan. Having avoided the beatdown he suffered in the original timeline with the oxygen destroyers deployment in Antarctica and the Orca not being used to awaken him, Rodan would never have been brought to heal by Gdora. So Rodan wouldn't be incentivized to join the fry on Gdora's side when he eventually arrives in Greenland, especially not after witnessing the supposed new alpha of Earth run from a fight with his twin tails tucked beneath his legs. Rodan doesn't hesitate to attack, driving Gdora back down where everyone else can tear into him like the Showa era monsters of Earth did to the original King Gdora. There is no escape for the Hydra this time around, especially not with Rodan and Mothra blocking any possible aerial retreat. King Dora is torn aunder and vaporized, permanently ending the extraterrestrial tyrant. It's a hard-fought victory, one which for Godzilla reaffirms his alliance with the queen of monsters, assures he has a constant ally in that of Angaras, and places Rodan firmly in Godzilla's good graces. Something which will likely ensure the molten Aven isn't forcibly placed into hibernation like his canon counterpart. As for Monarch, after the resounding success of Graham and Emma's plan, the pair likely would hold far more say in the future of Monarch. And given Emma's drive and devotion to the cause, it may be enough to see her take the role as head of Monarch, clawing independence and power away from the military and other heads of government.
Though, can Emma truly reestablish Monarch's independence? How will Apex take the resounding defeat of their weapons program against King Gdora? And finally, what other consequences will occur with Angier's involvement within the Monsterverse? Well, all that and more will be explored in an eventual part two.
