Saint Pius V (1504-1572), born Antonio Ghislieri, was a 16th-century Pope who played a decisive role in defending Catholicism and Europe through his leadership during the Battle of Lepanto in 1571, where he united European powers against the Ottoman Empire and attributed the victory to the intercession of the Virgin Mary under the devotion of the Rosary.
