Cult leaders attract followers through five key behavioral traits: purpose, movement, appearance, confidence, and connection. The most influential leaders possess a genuine sense of purpose that makes them willing to accept personal injury or sacrifice, which creates composure and non-reactivity. In any interaction, the person who needs less from others and reacts the least typically holds more power and influence, as demonstrated by cult leaders like David Koresh who maintained confidence and composure even under extreme pressure.

How Cult Leaders REALLY Recruit Followers - Chase HughesAdded:
You mentioned David Koresh and Charles Manson, and I was wondering if we could maybe talk about some of these leaders and figure out what we can learn from them and maybe learn about ourselves. I actually watched the Waco, Texas um documentary on Netflix. I don't know if you watched it like a year ago. It's like six or seven part series. I was actually, I think in high school when that happened, and I remember seeing the video and it was like, what the hell's going on there? But, pretty fascinating to go deep into that documentary and find out what's going on. And one of the things I I just remembered is that they had the phone calls to David with the ATF agents and the FBI or whoever the hell else was there.
And that dude is maximum confident.
Like, he's just like he's like, we're here. He's like, you know what? Bring it. Like, we're not going anywhere.
Like, we are going, you know, we're going to heaven or whatever. He was just And just the tone of his voice, and this is after that, you know, maybe the tanks came at the end, but this is after, you know, you're getting surrounded. There are rounds coming in. It's getting hairy. And I was always surprised uh I noticed his confidence. You know, he really was assured in his mission, I guess, until the end. And I guess everybody else there was assured of him, too.
Um I don't know, did I notice something there? Is this why they're good at what they do? Because they actually believe it? Or what can we learn from some of these uh cult leaders, I guess?
Anything can be called a cult.
So, let's uh let's break this down from a behavioral psychology perspective.
So, first we have like a a sense of purpose and drive. So, this was the last thing I said earlier. We had that movement, appearance, confidence, connection, and intent. Those are the five little tripwires that we see in other people that say, I need to follow that person.
So, that that drive, that intent, and that we can see the why. So, when a person has a real purpose, not like I've I've made some t-shirts out of out of this catchphrase kind of a thing. Some real purpose in their life.
Then they get down to the next phase of this, which is if if the purpose is very important, I'm willing to accept some injury for this.
The injury is okay.
So like, Brian, if you and I are talking and we're in a negotiation, if I need less from you than you need from me, in almost any relationship, the person who needs less is in charge.
>> [snorts] >> So in situations like this and when in conflict situations, the person who needs less is typically more willing to be injured. Is more willing to suffer a financial loss if it's a negotiation or or whatever it is. This willingness either comes from purpose, uh maybe some schizophrenia coming in there, but purpose can definitely do that stuff.
And the willingness to be injured means that I'm not concerned with performing or how you're perceiving me.
So the willingness to be injured in pursuit of the purpose leads down to this composure. And that's why like they would call him I've listened to these tapes. They'd call him on the phone.
And it's like he was kind of talking down this nervous hostage negotiator.
Yeah. He was he was the calm one. He needed less than they needed from him.
And and typically the those are the two factors of what decides who wins an interaction.
A, the person who needs less from the other person and B, the person who reacts to the other person the least.
Who's the most non-reactive person. And and those are the traits whether it's the Manson or the Koresh, it leads down from that passion, willingness to be injured and it's typically social injury in in today's world.
And that leads to a composure and the composure nee- leads to uh I'm not seeking something from you and I'm not reacting or you're reacting to me more than I'm reacting to you.
