Effective midge fly control in lakes requires an integrated approach combining chemical larvicide treatment (applied every 30 days to kill hatching eggs), biological control through maintenance fish stocking (goldfish that consume larvae, done in spring and fall to avoid summer mortality), and environmental management through lake dyeing to reduce algae growth that supports midge fly populations.

[music] >> All right, happy Friday everybody. We're over here at Ironwood at the Finger Lakes. I'm here with Lindell. You've got a lot of comment cards and feedback regarding the midge flies. So Lindell's going to share some some comments on that. So we've been working with our lake management company and our pest control company as it pertains to the midge flies. They're they're really bad this year. We can all see that. So we have about 30 days ago we treated the lake with a larvicide. And what that does is kill the the hatching eggs on the surface of the lake. It's not effective if to treat it multiple times outside of 30 days. So we're treating it again. It's been 30 days. We're going to treat the lakes again. Additionally, mid-April we stocked the lake with maintenance fish. These fish are what they do is eat the larva from the surface of the lake. They're goldfish fish actually. So we did our spring fish stock and we'll do fish stocking again in the fall.
We can't stock fish over the summer because the the mortality rate is too high in the warmer temperatures. So we'll we will stay on top of this issue.
Also, the lake's going to get dyed. That will deter the algae growth in the lake which also is a factor. So we're we will continue to work on this issue until it's resolved. We're working closely with our lake management company on this.
Thank you, Lindell. You're welcome.
>> We're going to keep working on it. We hear you. I've talked to several of you on the phone, so we're working on it.
I believe we'll mitigate this in the near future. Have a happy weekend, everybody. Thanks.
>> Hey.
