Multiple shots fired at police officers and ATF agents in Pennsylvania

[00:00:00]Police are talking with a person of interest after shots were fired at a federal agent in the Hill District. KDKA was the only station there as man was taken in for questioning. KDKA lead investigator Andy Sheehan reports who this person is and why he's no stranger to police.

[00:00:17]>> Well, the FBI, which is heading this investigation, will only say they have a suspect of interest in custody. But police sources tell me they believe they have the man responsible for firing on federal agents.

[00:00:43]>> A massive police response after city officers and agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives tried to execute a warrant on a suspect wanted on gun charges when things nearly turned deadly.

[00:00:58]>> Someone fired multiple times at one of the ATF agents who was in his police car.

[00:01:04]The police car was struck. Thankfully, the ATF agent was not struck.

[00:01:08]>> Wanted was this man, 19-year-old Daniel Lightfoot Gaines. Only KDKA was there when he was brought in this afternoon for questioning.

[00:01:17]>> Did you fire at the agents?

[00:01:19]>> Though he has not yet been charged, police sources confirm investigators believe Lightfoot Gaines is the person responsible for firing those shots and then fleeing the scene. This morning, agents and city police tracked him to an address in Homewood where they took him into custody. Though only 19, Lightfoot Gaines had already been arrested twice for carrying unlicensed firearms. The most recent in January in the Hill District when this affidavit says he was arrested carrying a Glock and charged with carrying a firearm without a license and possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance. The affidavit says in a prior arrest he had a Glock switch to make the handgun fully automatic and sources say he is suspected in a recent shooting. Shortly after noon he was taken here to police headquarters for questioning but since it was a federal agent who was fired upon the investigation is being handled by the FBI which will only say that a suspect of interest has been taken into custody and they issued this statement.

[00:02:24]Quote, "FBI Pittsburgh and our partners at all levels will work to determine the true facts of this investigation in order to ensure anyone who believes they can willfully target another individual, whether law enforcement or civilian, is brought to justice." Last night Chief Lando emphasized the danger of law enforcement.

[00:02:45]>> These guys and ladies are up here working very hard to to catch a dangerous individual and and you know there there out here putting their lives at risk to get the job done and so um you know I very much appreciate that and we're going to do everything we can to get this person in custody.

[00:03:00]>> Now Daniel Lightfoot Gaines finds himself in deep trouble. If he is charged and convicted of firing on a federal agent, he could face up to 20 years in prison.
