First Holy Communion is a Catholic sacrament where children receive Jesus Christ for the first time through the Eucharist, symbolizing their entry into the Christian faith and becoming living tabernacles who carry Jesus in their hearts; the celebration emphasizes gratitude to parents and teachers, the importance of becoming like Jesus through concrete actions such as honesty, kindness, and helping others, and the significance of the table as a sacred space where Jesus is present.

First Holy CommunionAdded:
Good afternoon everyone. Welcome to St. Francis Church for our celebration of the sacrament of first holy communion.
Please use your communion booklets to follow along with the mass. If you don't have one, they are in the back of church in a basket. At this time, I'd like to ask everyone to just turn off your phones and remind you there's no food or drink during mass. There is a cry room in the back of church with a large screen TV. If anyone needs it or needs to use a restroom, it is back there. At communion time, our children will be invited up first with their parents.
Then the ushers will invite families and friends to proceed up one pew at a time.
Your communion donation envelopes uh can be placed in the collection basket and we thank you in advance for your generosity. Please be patient and remember we are celebrating a sacrament.
Um just we ask that no one leaves their pews at any time to go up into the aisle or to the altar to take pictures. Um at the end of mass there will be a group picture taken on the altar with Father Chris and all of the children. So we just ask everyone at the end of mass to remain in their seats at that time. Our children have worked very hard for this day and I'm so very proud of all of them. Please stand and welcome our celebrant and pastor, Father Chris. And our opening hymn is Smile. Don't you know God loves you?
>> Your hands. Your hands. Okay. Slowly.
Slowly.
Ready?
smile.
Don't you know God loves you?
>> Come to think of it, I love you, too.
>> Take the time to smile at someone and before you're through, someone will be smiling back at you.
I can't really be happy unless I know that you are happy, too.
I'm your friend. I care for you. If I have joy, then so can you. And our hearts can sing this happy song.
Smile. Don't you know God loves you?
Come to think of it, I love you, too.
Take the time to smile at someone. And before you're through, someone will be smiling back at you.
>> Smile. Don't you know?
>> Come to think of it, I love you, too.
Take the time to smile at someone and before you're through, someone will be smiling back at you.
Someone will be smiling back at you.
>> Good afternoon everyone.

Amen. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all.
>> With your spirit.
>> Gathered today on this special day for our children receiving Jesus for the first time. We gather as one family. We we are gathered as God's family. as one family recognizing again our very shortcomings and sinfulness for us to be less unworthy to offer this sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving.
And so all of us we say I confess to Almighty God and to you my brothers and sisters that I have greatly sinned in my thoughts in my words and what I've done and what I have failed to do through my fault through my fault through my most grievous fault. Therefore, I ask blessed Mary, ever virgin, all the angels and saints, and you, my brothers and sisters, to pray for me to the Lord our God. May almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us our sins, and bring us to everlasting life. Amen.
>> Lord have mercy.

One, two, three.
>> Okay, Catalina.

Okay. Oh, we have to bow. Bow.
Bow.
Bow. Girls. Bow.
Come apolog Exodus. After the people of Israel had escaped from Egypt and were in the desert, they all started complaining to Moses and Aaron. They said, "We wish the Lord had killed us in Egypt. when we lived there, we could at least sit down and eat all the bread and meat we wanted. But you have brought us out here in the desert where we're going to starve to death."
The Lord said to Moses, "I will send bread down from heaven like rain for all of you. Each day, the people can go out and gather up only enough for that day.
By doing this, I'll find out if they will obey me. I have heard my people complain. Now tell them that each evening they will have meat and each morning they will have more than enough bread. The people will know that I am the Lord their God. That evening birds came and landed everywhere in the camp.
The next morning dew covered the ground.
After the dew had gone, there were thin flakes that looked like frost all over the ground. The people have never seen anything like this. And they started asking each other, "What is it?" Moses told them, "This is the food that the Lord has given you." The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.
This one.
>> Taste and see the goodness of the Lord.
I will always praise the Lord with all my heart. I will praise the Lord. Let all who are helpless listen and be glad.
>> Taste and see the goodness of the Lord.
Honor the Lord with me. Celebrate his great name. I asked the Lord for help and he saved me from all my fears.
>> Taste.
>> Taste and see the goodness of the Lord.
Keep your eyes on the Lord. You will shine like the sun and never bless with shame. I have nobody, but I prayed and the Lord saved me from all my troubles.
>> Taste and see the goodness of the Lord.
Honor the Lord. You are his special people. No one who honors the Lord will ever be in need. Young lions may go hungry hungry or even starve. But if you trust the Lord, you will never miss out on anything good. Taste and see.
>> Taste and see the goodness of the Lord.
A reader from the axis of the apostles.
The followers of Jesus spent their time learning from the apostles and they were like family to each other.
They also broke bread and prayed the together.
Everyone was amazed at the many miracles and wonders that the apostlates worked. All the Lord followers often met together and they shared everything they had.
They would sell their properties and possessions and give the money to whoever needed it.
Day after day they met together in the temple. The bro the broken bread to together in different homes and shared their food happily and freely while praising God. Everyone liked them and each each day the Lord added the their to added to their group there. How were being saved the Lord of the >> Thanks be to God.
>> Please stand. Hallelu.
Hallelu.
Hallelu.
Hallelu.
Hallelu.
Hallelu.
Hallelu.

I am the living bread from heaven, says the Lord.
Whoever eats this bread will live forever.
Hallelujah.
Hallelu.

>> The Lord be with you. Your spirit. A reading from the Holy Gospel according to John. Glory to you, O Lord. Jesus said to the crowd, "I am the bread from heaven. Everyone who eats it will live forever. My flesh is the lifegiving bread that I give to the people of this world." They started arguing with each other and asked, "How can he give us his flesh to eat?" Jesus answered, "I tell you for certain that you won't live unless you eat the flesh and drink the blood of the Son of Man. But if you do eat my flesh and drink my blood, you will have eternal life, and I will raise you to the life on the last day. My flesh is the true food, and my blood is the true drink. If you eat my flesh and drink my blood, you are you are with me, and I am with you. The living father sent me and I have life because of him.
Now everyone who eats my flesh will live because of me. The bread that comes down from heaven is not like what your ancestors ate. They died. But whoever eats this bread will live forever. The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ.
Good afternoon again to everyone.
Good afternoon again to everyone.
I know we are all excited especially for these kids receiving Jesus for the first time. Some of you were here, you know, before the um uh the time of our uh first communion and and you saw that Adam's brother was baptized, right? He was baptized and one of the parts of baptism is no other than lighting the candle from here and given to the parents and to the godfather to go mother and godfather. By the way, what is being called? What is this candle called? You forgot already.
This is the Easter candle or the pascal candle that we lit celebrating Jesus resurrection. So that part being given that candle being given to the mother and to the god parents symbolizing what that that child has been enlightened by Christ. Noah has been enlightened by Christ. You have been enlightened by Christ. And what were the following words? That the child may continue to keep the fl the faith alive in his heart. These were the words obviously you didn't even remember that given to your mom and dad and to the god parents. Yes.
Keeping the flame of faith alive in our hearts for two years now. Two years you have been preparing for this day. You have been preparing for this day. And mommy and daddy were always there for you as they will always be there for you.
So I know you have done this many times but today of all days I would like you to stand up. Stand up. First communion kids stand up all of you. Okay? I know you have done this before. I want you to hug mommy and daddy and say thank you to them today. Hug mommy and daddy and say thank you.
I know you will mess up your dress but it's okay.
Where's mommy? Oh, ma'am my when she comes back. Okay.
Okay. Sit down. Sit down. Because gratitude gratitude allows us to be joyful. No one is grateful and at the same time miserable. And that is why we are here today. I know you are all excited. You have been looking forward to this day. And how precious is this day, the most important day in our lives. receiving Jesus in our hearts for the first time. You are so special.
Look, even the sun came out today. You are so special to Jesus because you made Jesus so special also to you.
The love of Jesus will never put us down. That is why we celebrate today. You areing not the greatest person in this world, not the president, not even the pope. you are receiving our creator, our God, our lord Jesus Christ whose love never fails. So that's why we start by saying today thank you to your parents and we extend our gratitude to Cheryl our CCD um director to our Martha to your CCD teachers for preparing you along with your parents you know for this day that the Lord has made the church looks beautiful.
We're lucky because last night I had a wedding here. I had a wedding. They look like you dressed up so beautifully. And uh they even left these bows and these flowers knowing that we'll have first communion today. So say a prayer for that couple. So nice of them to leave everything to the church. Gratitude. We always continue to say that word and thank you from the bottom of my heart for this blessing that you bestow on St. Francis the little church with a big heart because gratitude is also what is all about that kind of mass thanksgiving recognizing this kind of blessing today.
So today you are going to receive Jesus for the first time. I know all of you have your favorite food, right? Father Chris favorite food is no other than the Filipino adobo. What is that made of?

I asked them what is their favorite food because you know they always long they always want that kind of food because when it comes to receiving Jesus it's a kind of food that we receive we all know that the food we take we become what we eat obviously you don't become like pizza you don't be like like sushi you know don't be like like that but the food fuels s our energy, our vitality, our productivity.
When it comes to receiving Jesus, we become like him. And that is precisely we are we rejoice and that is also the challenge for each and every one of us.
When we become like him and how do we become like him? But if we go before my second question, how many of you here helps mommy or daddy set up the table?
No one. Mommy and daddy, no one still helping the table. You know where we eat? I hope you don't eat at the sofa watching TV and playing. Okay, we we have tables at home in the church. What do we have? Same thing. And where is the table that we have? Where's the table that we have? If we have to eat, we need a table. Where's the table? Adam and >> that's a lot of direction.
He means the blessed the tabernacle.
That is where we put Jesus. You know the blessed uh tabernacle. That's why we bop. That's why those candles are being lit to signify the presence of Jesus.
And today you become, thank you for that insight. you become living tabernacles where you're going to receive and keep Jesus in your hearts. And that is precisely also what I ask of you. The prayer will all ask for you that you may continue to share what you have. We give that reverence. We bow because we recognize the presence of Jesus. Now receiving Jesus, we recognize that he is in our hearts. Again, sorry for interruption. I want you to all to stand up. The first kid, first communion kids, stand up and come with me. Come with me.
Come on, all of you. Come with Father Chris. Come on, let's go to the table here.
I want you to go around.
I hope this is the first time that you find yourselves on the side of the of the church. Okay, I want you to touch the table. Come on, put your hands Put your hands on the altar.
Okay.
>> Beautiful.
>> What does it feel?
>> Huh?
>> Hard.
Now, what do you say in in Spanish?
>> Right.
Ah, masa. Very good. Thank you. My house is your house. This table becomes your table. So, do not be strangers.
Okay. When it comes to receiving Jesus from this table, because this table is yours, obviously you're going to take it home because Father Chris will have them no more table and besides it's heavy.
No, I want you to have that kind of feel because I don't want you to be strangers at all. I have start I started by saying you are all special to Jesus because you made Jesus so special. We are all special to Jesus. And that is why in this opportunity in this precious moment of your life receiving Jesus for the first time, you know you are all gathered here. Let it be a simple reminder of Jesus love for you and you are not strangers at all. We are God's children and this table from now on becomes your own table. Okay. So, we go back to our seats.
Perfect.
Slowly so we have said from the table we're going to receive Jesus and we become what we eat. I would like you to tell father Chris now what is the one concrete way one concrete way that we would would like to become like Jesus.
One concrete way Michelle like Jesus.
What is that?
>> Honest.
>> Honest being honest.
>> Being kind.
>> Being kind.

>> We speak up for ourselves concrete way that we become like Jesus. What else?
What else you have said?
>> Be respectful.
>> Be respectful.
>> Do not hurt anybody.
>> Do not hurt anybody. Wow. I know this is a s celebration. Forgive me if I allow you to think. I know we have to celebrate here. But this day in this way, I know that you will remember this day by receiving Jesus for the first time. So precious this day. That's why you're all dressed up. You have taken already your pictures. You have uh a little party. You have you will receive gifts. You have this beautiful banners with you. The church looks beautiful.
Why? Because it is your presence. It is your love. It is indeed your joy that makes this day so precious, so beautiful, reminding ourselves of that love that Jesus has for each and every one of us. In the name of the father, the son, of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Congratulations again from all of us.
We now stand for the prayer of the faithful. I invite all the prayer prayer leaders to come up for the prayer of the faithful.
No person.
I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages, God from God, light from light, true God from true God, begotten not made, consubstantial with the Father.
Through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation, he came down from heaven. And by the Holy Spirit, was incarnate of the Virgin Mary and became man. For our sake, he was crucified under Pontius Pilate. He suffered death and was buried and rose again on the third day in accordance with the scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the holy spirit, the lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the father and the son, who with the father and the son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church. I confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins, and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen. Please be seated for our offer to song.

Blessed are you, Lord, God of all creation. Through your goodness, we have this bread to offer, which earth has given and human hands have made. It will become for us the bread of life. Blessed be God forever.
Blessed are you, Lord God of all creation. And through your goodness, we have this wine to offer. Fruit of the vine and work of human hands. It will become our spiritual drink. Blessed be God forever.
Let us pray that our sacrifice may be acceptable to God the Almighty Father.
May the Lord accept this sacrifice at your hands for the praise and glory of his name for our good and the good of all his church. Grant your church, O Lord, the gifts of unity and peace whose signs are to be seen in mystery in the offerings we here present through Christ our Lord. Amen. The Lord be with you.
>> And with your spirit.
>> Lift up your hearts.
>> Lift them up to the Lord.
>> And let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right and >> it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks, Lord, holy father, almighty and eternal God, through Jesus Christ our Lord. For at the last supper with his apostles, establishing for the ages to come, the saving memorial of the cross, he offered himself to you as the emblemous lamb, the acceptable gift of perfect praise and sacrifice. Nourishing your faithful by this sacred mystery, you make them holy so that the human race, bounded by one world, may be enlighted by one faith and united by one band of charity. And so we approach the table of this wondrous sacrament, so that bathed in the sweetness of your grace, we may pass over to the heavenly realities here for shadowed. Therefore, all creatures of heaven and earth, sing a new song in adoration. And we with all the host of angels cry out and with one out end we acclaim holy holy holy Lord God of hosts.
Heaven and earth are full are full of your gloryy.
Hosana.
Hosana.
Hosana in the highest.
Blessed is he who comes who comes in the name of the Lord.
Hosana.
Hosana.
Hosana in the highest.
Please kneel if you can. On the day before he was to suffer in the night of the last supper, Jesus took bread and said the blessing, broke the bread, and gave it to his disciples, saying, "Take this all of you and eat of it, for this is my body which will be given up for you.
In a similar way, when supper was ended, he took the chalice and giving you thanks, gave the chalice to his disciples, saying, "Take this all of you and drink from it. For this is the chalice of my blood, the blood of the new and eternal covenant, which will be poured out for you and for many, for the forgiveness of sins. Do this in memory of me.
The mystery of faith.
We proclaim your death, O Lord, and profess your resurrection until you come again.
Therefore, holy father, as we celebrate the memorial of Christ, your son, our savior, whom you led through his passion and death on the cross to the glory of the resurrection, and whom you have seated at your right hand, we proclaim the work of your love until he comes again. And we offer you the bread of life and the chalice of blessing. Look with favor on the oblation of us your church and which we show forth the pascal sacrifice of Christ that has been handed on to us and grant that by the power of the spirit of your love we may be counted now and until the day of eternity among the members of your son in whose body and blood we have communion by your partaking by our partaking of this mystery. Almighty father give us life through your spirit.
Grant that we may be conformed to the immates of your son and confirm us in the band of communion together with Leo our pope, Joseph our bishop, with all our bishops, with priests and deacons and with your entire people. Grant that all the faithful of the church looking into the signs of the times by the light of the faith may constantly devote themselves to the service of the gospel.
Keep us of attentive to the needs of others that sharing their grief and pain, their joy and hope, we may faithfully bring them the good news of salvation and go forward with them along the way of your kingdom. Remember also our brothers and sisters, especially Bob Meyers, who has fallen asleep in the hope of your Christ and all the dead, whose faith you alone have known.
admit them to rejoice in the light of your face and in the resurrection give them the fullness of life. Grant also to us when our earthly pilgrimage is done that we may come to an eternal dwelling place and live with you forever there in communion with the blessed virgin Mary mother of God with the blessed apostles and martyrs with St. Joseph St. Francis and with all the saints we shall praise and exalt you through Jesus Christ your son. Through him and with him and in him, oh God, almighty father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory and honor is yours forever and ever. Amen.

A special thank you to Father Chris, our pastor, for his generous love and support for our children and all he does for this program all year long. To Mitchell, our music director, for all of his talent and patience working with us, not only today, but all year long. It is so appreciated. Thank you for all you do for us. to Eileen Carvalo who could not be with us today for her guidance and all of her help throughout the year. A special blessed thank you to Miss Marta Samillo, our second grade catechist, for her hard work in preparing the children, not only today, but for all of their sacraments, for all she does at mass.
Thank you, Miss Marta.
>> I'd also like to just take a moment and thank our young volunteers. It's so inspirational to our younger children and it's really so gratitude I have for them that come back and help us.
