Getting Married in ASSAM, INDIA 🇮🇳😮Added:
This is a real party here.
Okay, the guys are throwing rice now.
There's like a battle going on here.
Here she comes, guys. Here she comes.
Good morning, guys. Welcome back to the channel. We are here in the town of Bareta Road in the state of Assam and we stayed in this hotel [music] last night, this massive building here. When we first arrived, they said they had no rooms available. But eventually, after a bit of convincing, they let us have a room. And we wanted to go for breakfast here this morning because last night [music] the place was super busy, full of locals. So, we thought it's got to be really good. [music] But alas, this morning they are closed. So, we're going to go here for breakfast, which I think is a sweet shop. So, let's see what they've got. Oh, wow. So, they do have breakfast. So, they have choli patura.
Look how amazing it looks. It's so fluffy. You get one massive piece of bread. And then here is a chickpeas mix.
Ooh, spicy.
>> Spicy. They have so many different sweets here.
It's very very tempting. Which one is the nicest one? You think >> one among all these? I can you would like to try this rasol. I like this one has a creamy and sweet. The perfect the texture is nice. Definitely like it.
>> Yes, we try that one.
>> What do you think about the roses? It looks so pretty.
>> It looks tempting. Yes.
>> Yes. Very tempting.
>> Thank you so much. And then one of the rash malai.
>> You can't walk past something so beautiful without trying it. Look how beautiful that looks. That's like proper art here.
>> Oh yeah, very sweet.
It's normally not a good idea to stuff yourself in the morning with a lot of sweets. M. It tastes really nice.
>> Obviously the first time I've ever had a rose for breakfast.
M. It's like cake icing. Just pure sugar and red food coloring.
This sweet is called Rash Malay.
>> It's good.
>> Yeah, that's nice.
>> Rash Malay is a success.
>> Oh, thank you. Thank you.
>> What is it made of?
>> From milk, basically.
>> Okay. From milk.
>> Yeah.
>> Milk and sugar.
>> Yes. Milk and sugar.
>> Okay. Let me try.
>> Oops.
[clears throat] It's like a very wet gulab jamun like in a sort of more milky sauce.
>> It's like a sponge. When you bite into it, it just like all this sweet milk comes out of it. Little bit strange.
>> These are the guys from the sweet shop.
Thank you guys. [music] The hotel kept our bikes safe and sound here in this little [music] alleyway.
Yes.
Bye-bye. [music] [music] Sorry, sorry, sorry, sorry. [laughter] >> I think he forgives you.
>> Okay. Good morning, world. Welcome back to the channel. It's ride number 15 on our motorcycle adventure exploring the northeast of India.
>> And we are here in the town of Bareta [music] Road, named after the road that goes to Barpeta.
>> It got so busy that they made a town out of it. And we made our way here yesterday from [music] the border of Bhutan because guys, we've been invited to a wedding today. Our friend Mukoot is getting married and we met Makoot last year at a motorcycle homeay in Carnatica called Katicardu.
Shout out to Danoo and Kadiku. We miss you. Amazing place. And Mukoot was the chief architect building these massive crazy beautiful bamboo structures. So then when Makoot heard that we were heading into the northeast of India, he said, "If you guys are coming to Assam, [music] then you guys are invited to my wedding." So yes, Mukoot and Bimonyi, [music] we are coming to your wedding guys because guys, when do you have the chance to experience a traditional Indian wedding?
>> Thank you so much for inviting us guys.
I'm super super excited and I can't wait to celebrate this special day with you.
>> Oh, I don't. Okay, just come to the sides.
>> Man, those buses really want to go.
>> There are some people to pick up.
>> Oh, I forgot to show you guys on the map. So, this is where we're heading today. So, we are here in Bareta Road.
And today [music] we will be riding to Makut's village located just outside of Nalbari. So, I have no idea what to expect from the day ahead, but I think it's going to be pretty crazy, guys, because Makoot tells us not only are we celebrating at his place where we're riding to now, but in the evening after that's [music] all finished, the entire wedding party is going to be traveling 4 hours over to Bimon's village where then they will be doing even more rituals and celebrations, and then everybody's going to be driving 4 hours back. So, he tells us we probably won't get back to his place until about 6:00 in the morning.
I don't know if this is a common thing with weddings or if it's just in Asam.
So, please let me know in the comments if you guys did the same thing for your wedding, but that sounds like it's going to be a pretty crazy day ahead. But, I'm sure it's going to be amazing. There's going to be a lot of traditional rituals going on and it's just going to be so interesting to find out more about what an Indian wedding is like. So, it's a 53 kilometer ride to reach the place from Mukoot. And Google Map says it will take us 1 hour and 10 minutes. It's already 10:50, so better hit the road. Let's go.
[music] [music] >> [music] >> Oh, guys, we totally forgot to say, but we have also entered a new state.
>> Welcome to Assam, the first of our seven sister states, which is absolutely amazing.
>> Yeah, we've been calling this whole trip the northeast adventure. But we hadn't actually arrived in the northeast until now. There was so much of Sikkim to explore and then Bhutan. But now guys, we are officially here in the seven sister states. And tomorrow after the wedding, we're going to be riding to Asam's capital city, Guahhati. And from there, we're going to be planning the next leg of our adventure.
>> And also there, we want to get the bikes serviced. We want to get finally a new mirror.
>> Yeah. Unfortunately, I still couldn't get a new mirror. Every place that we've tried, they don't seem to have it in stock.
>> And we are never long enough in one place that we can actually wait for it.
>> But if there's any place that we can get these bikes back into tiptop condition, then it's going to be the largest city in the whole of the Northeast, Guahhati.
Look at this. It's a truck full of noodles.
Instant noodle delivery.
[music] >> [music] [music] >> Wow, look how lush it is once you get off the main highway.
We've just got banana trees here. We've got coconut trees. A whole lot of bamboo. It makes sense why if you live here, you would become a bamboo architect. Beautiful. Look at that. The lush countryside of Assam.
>> Understand English.
>> Don't speak English.
>> Don't It's okay. It's okay.
It's okay. Thank you. All the best.
Yeah.
>> Yes, ma'am.
>> Thank you. Nice to meet you. Nice to meet you.
We are Indian or Korasamis.
>> Very good. Very good. Thank you.
Bye-bye.
>> Well, it's a busy market morning here.
>> Yeah.
>> Look at all this fresh produce for sale.
>> Where's he going? To the left. Okay.
Muk's village seems very, very busy.
At least this one road. Oh my lord.
Here is something going on. today.
>> Yeah. Look at that. One minute you're in the quiet countryside. And now look at it. It's bustling.
>> Yeah.
>> They've got some fruits here, some onions, potatoes, everything you need for a good Indian curry.
>> And I love these electric touktalks.
They are so nice and quiet. Listen, they make no sounds, >> but they also have no suspension, so they're pretty rattly when you're sitting in one. I remember we took one in Delhi and man it was uncomfortable.
>> Okay, it should come up just on the right here.
Here. A >> Yeah, this place looks full of bamboo.
>> This has got to be his place.
>> Full of bamboo and very nice decorated.
Look with the fabrics.
>> Oh, nice.
>> Oh, wow.
>> Cool. Here he is. Hello. How are you?
How are you? I'm fine.
>> You're doing good.
>> Yeah. Yeah.
>> You look so cool.
>> So nice to see you.
>> Nice to see you, too.
>> I can't go be beyond this point.
>> You You can't go beyond this point. Is that part of the ritual?
>> Yeah. Yeah.
>> Oh, wow. Is your outfit as well part of the ritual?
>> For now, this is my outfit. [laughter] It will change at the night.
>> So, how long do you have to wear this for?
>> Uh, it will be till afternoon. The mothers and all, they will give me a bath. Then after that, I have to change it. You're going to get a bath from from your mother.
>> Yeah. Mother and my uh >> auntie. Auntie and all.
>> Hi guys.
>> My brother.
>> This your brother? Oh, hello. Hello. How are you?
>> My brother-in-law.
>> Your brother-in-law?
>> Okay. And your brother? Hi Ollie. Lavy.
>> Watch your videos as well.
>> Oh, cool. Awesome. I really like the decorations that you've done. Did you set this up yesterday?
>> From last 4 days.
>> 4 days.
>> It's amazing. No way.
>> The National Highway.
>> That's beautiful. Is this your house?
Yeah, this is my house. Actually, it's almost covered right now.
>> You covered your entire house in decorations.
>> Yeah, like this.
>> That's so cool.
>> So, this is will be the place for my reception area.
>> So, main rituals are happening there.
>> Okay. The main rituals are happening over in this >> in this area. And then here is going to be the reception.
>> So, that's the eating area.
>> You set all of this up. This is incredible. Is it like with bamboo and then fabric? Yeah. This uh behind this these are the bamboo frames and this is just the fabric and all. It's the standard here.
>> Really?
>> Yeah.
>> So, everybody when they have a wedding here, they do the same. They like transform their whole property >> into a big venue.
>> That's so cool. Okay, we'll park the bikes and we'll bring our stuff. Okay.
>> Awesome.
[music] >> [music] >> So, welcome to Mukut's house or Mukut's family house. Behind me here is the ritual area where Mukut's father and a priest are doing a whole bunch of different rituals to the ancestors.
Namaste. Namaste. Nice to meet you. Nice to meet you. [laughter] >> But right now, we are going to be following um the group of girls in front of us.
And this group of women are going to be walking over to a local pond and they're going to be collecting water and after they will actually bathe Mukut in that water as one of the ritual preparations before he gets changed into his formal outfit. So all of you are like the aunties, cousins.
>> Okay. All the women of the family and it's your job to get some water.
>> Yeah. Holy water from Makut's body.
>> And then Makoot gets bathed in the water or you just pour it on his head. Pouring on him.
[singing] [singing] And Lavy's already been given a beautiful bindi here and some lipstick.
>> And also Muk's mom, she brought me actually a sari. So I will be putting on that later for the main rituals. And I really can't wait because all the women's here, they look so pretty in their dresses. So I'm so excited about it. Also listen to the shanting.
>> Sounds so nice.
>> It's amazing because when we're riding on the road, we passed by so many groups of people walking down the road holding offerings, chanting, and we never understand what they're actually doing.
So, it's pretty amazing that today we are the people walking down the road. We have made it, guys. We are part of a procession and we know where they're going and what they're doing.
>> What a day. What a day. [music] [music] English.
[bell] [bell] >> [bell] >> So, all the women have received blessings from the temple now. So, now we're going to be going to the pond to collect the water that Makoot is going to be bathed in. I hope I'm explaining this. Okay, guys. I am actually just learning as we go.
Mission accomplished, guys. We have holy water. I think Makoot just ran away. I just saw him hiding in the corner.
[applause] A lot of my [applause] [music] Check this out. We prepared a little present for the couple. We bought this morning in the sweet shop these little cute sweets where there's love written on and then we could buy a really nice wedding card as well luckily because we didn't actually know what we should give to a Indian wedding. So anyway, I hope you will like it guys and I'm just so amazed that actually the whole day they have different rituals going on. The rituals going on the whole time. I mean the father and the priest, they are just sitting there and doing rituals.
>> Yeah, there are a lot of stages to this wedding, guys. We only really understand like 10% of it.
>> Not even 10%, 1% maybe.
>> But anyway, we're just having some tea and they just passed around some jalbi and some puddi.
>> Nice and crunchy.
>> I don't know if I'm supposed to eat them together. [laughter] Yeah, that's really good.
>> How are you feeling? [laughter] >> I'm having all the feeling feelings at once. I don't know. Nervous and excited.
Happiness, joy.
>> Yeah, of course. Of course.
>> A little bit of fear.
>> Oh, it's going to be a really nice day.
I'm really happy for you.
>> Your future wife, is she doing rituals as well now?
>> Yeah. Yeah.
>> She's also doing like a whole day ritual with her family.
>> Wow. Okay, so Makut is about to go and have his bath. His bath from the holy water, but he requested that we didn't film that. So, we'll see you after the bath.
[laughter] >> Nice to meet you.
>> Here he comes. Here he comes.
>> [laughter] >> You look reborn now. How do you feel?
>> I don't know. [laughter] >> Was it a good bath?
>> Yeah.
>> Yeah.
[music] Guys, check out all the food that these guys have prepared for this wedding celebration. We've got a whole vegetable market here. Those are all onions.
A whole bag of potatoes.
Look at those. When these guys do a wedding, they go big.
>> Thank you. Welcome.
>> So, we're having a dal with rice. I think this is a subji potatoes and peas.
And what is this here?
>> Very small local potatoes.
[music] >> The guy is just coming around and filling our plates with more and more food. [music] >> Thank you. So, I have now fish on my plate. I have duck on my plate. And they just [music] brought me mutton. I need a second stomach.
>> So, it looks like the rituals here have finished now. Makut is going to be getting changed into his evening outfit and we'll get Lavy into her sari. Then, we have a 4-hour journey to reach Mukut's future bride's house.
>> So, I'm going to get changed now and she will help me [laughter] because I have no idea how it works.
>> Your outfit team is ready.
>> Okay. Okay. Yes. Three sisters.
>> Three sisters. All the sisters.
>> And and mother. Everyone's going to be helping Lavi get her outfit together.
What was the name of it again?
>> Michaela Sador.
>> Michaela Sador. Michaela Sador. And all of these are Michaela Sador. The Asam traditional outfit. I can't wait to see it. Hello.
>> Oh, hello.
[laughter] >> Where's your outfit?
>> I don't know. We got like stuck. I don't know what's happening.
>> You've only got [laughter] You've got some bracelets and you've got a necklace.
>> Exactly. So, this this is how far we got. [laughter] >> I got a bit further than you.
>> Wow.
>> Wonderful. Absolutely wonderful.
>> How is it? Is it good?
>> So nice. [laughter] >> Very good.
>> Very good.
>> Good. Good. I'm glad. What do they want to call this outfit?
>> Kouta.
>> Kouta.
>> Ka.
>> I'm ready in my kula. Okay, everybody.
The big reveal.
Very nice. Wow.
>> Very nice. Let me see all this jewelry as well.
>> You have the bracelets, necklaces, and the earrings. Give me a twirl.
>> That is so nice. Wow.
>> Very nice.
>> Very nice.
>> These ladies, they are professionals and dressing. Dressing up.
>> Thank you.
>> But we're matching. Yes, [laughter] >> Michael.
[music] [music] Here he is, guys.
>> The groom is ready. Is this the final outfit?
>> Yeah, >> this is it. This is complete now.
[laughter] >> Amazing. Got the maragolds on the head as well. You look ready.
>> Yeah, you do. You look ready. It's time for another tea and sweets break. Oh, >> no. I've already got one. So, this time we've got some milk tea and we've got some jalabbe and a thing called lu which is made of coconut. This is a traditional sweet from Assam. So, let's give it a go. M. Very coconuty. Very sweet.
Can't go wrong with that. Mhm.
>> I finished my one already. [snorts] >> I didn't know you had one.
>> You just stole half of mine.
>> Honestly, if you ever go to India, try to get yourself invited to a wedding.
You'll eat like a king. So, this is our last little refresher. I think they're nearly ready. And then we're all going to be getting on a bus and making our way over to the bride's house.
>> It's going to be a late night tonight.
So whilst we'll be traveling in a bus, Makut is going to be traveling in this specially decorated wedding car.
[music] This makes our Las Vegas wedding seem a little bit short.
[music] >> [music] >> Okay, guys. Bus is here. We're heading out.
>> Happy New Year, my love.
>> Should all acquaintance be?
>> I can't believe that they're doing this right in the middle of the street and there's like cars and bikes coming past.
So now I know why you can hear fireworks literally every night in any hotel you are in any part of India.
[laughter] >> We'll see you in 4 hours.
[music] We've made it somewhere. It's currently I think this is the welcome party for us. Oh my goodness. And we're waiting again.
I'm just hiding now behind the bus here.
It was a super crazy bus journey. I think it took about 3 and 1/2 hours. I can see that they're celebrating. So, we follow now.
If we thought there was a celebration going on over at Makut's [music] place.
Oh my goodness. So Mukut is just being led by his crew and an umbrella over towards his bride to be. And look at the setup they've got going here.
>> Everybody's just crowding [music] around Muk. He's such a celebrity tonight. I can see that they're putting scarves on him and welcoming him in. [music] >> Okay, the guys are throwing rice now. I see what the [music] umbrella's for now.
There's like a battle going on here.
>> Wow, look at the decoration here.
>> It's incredible here.
>> [music] >> We lost Makut now. Honestly, here are so many people >> from where?
>> Uh from UK.
>> UK.
>> Yes. And she from Germany.
>> Okay.
>> Nice to meet you.
So, this is the room where they're going to be doing all of the rituals and everybody's just coming in and taking their seats. I can see that Makuta's already sat down here preparing getting himself ready mentally.
>> Wow, he has so many people.
>> Yeah, I don't know if this is all relatives or relatives and friends or relatives, friends, and everybody from the village, but there are a lot of people here to celebrate the union of Mukut and Beiju. [music] >> [music] >> So, Makud has well and truly begun the rituals, but even this part of the wedding will take probably 2 to 3 hours.
I'm not sure exactly what they're doing, but I can see there's some ghee, there's some bamboo, there's some sticks, and they're all doing things and seem to know what they're doing. Anyway, they're soaking something in ghee. I think they are going to light a fire. And by the way, guys, there is no sign yet of Beiju. Apparently, she won't come out until probably halfway through the rituals. It's currently 20 to 1.
Celebrations ongoing. But check out this amazing shrine. It looks like a crazy bamboo construction.
Absolutely amazing. And there seems to be a lot of different offerings. We can see maragold flowers. We can see fruit.
We can see rice. Oh, a fire has been lit. Settle in, guys, for the action.
[music] [music] [music] >> It's time to bring the bride. How cute is that? They're carrying her.
>> Honestly, she looks like a princess. So cute. So, Mut is on the other side.
>> So, after hours of waiting, the bride and groom are finally here together.
[music] Heat. Heat. N.
[music] >> [music] >> Are you officially married now then?
Congratulations. Congratulations.
Congratulations. Amazing.
[music] It's 4:00 now, guys, and the rituals are actually finished for tonight. But wow, there was such a beautiful wedding. I'm so amazed. It was so nice. The bus is just getting ready. People are getting onto the bus. Yes, guys, there we go.
That is a wedding here in Assam. And that's it from us today. We hope you enjoyed the video. If so, please give us a thumbs up, subscribe to the channel, share the video with your friends and family, comment below, and we will see you next time.
