Darwin, Northern Territory's capital, demonstrates remarkable resilience through its history of surviving devastating events: it was bombed by Japanese forces in 1942 (the largest attack on Australian soil, with more bombs than Pearl Harbor, killing 252 people) and later devastated by Cyclone Tracy in 1974 (killing 66 people). Despite these challenges, Darwin has evolved into a multicultural city known for its laidback lifestyle, serving as a gateway to the Northern Territory's natural wonders. The city also showcases cultural fusion, such as the Japanese granite carvings by artist Mitsuaki Tanabe and South African culinary traditions like biltong, reflecting its diverse heritage.

ONE TEAM FISHES… THE OTHER TAKES ON DARWIN! 🌴🎣Added:
Good day, guys. Welcome back to Andrews Outdoors. I'm Mikey Cunningham. We've got Big Ash here. We're the guys in the Gulf and uh like and subscribe.
Well, big thanks to Mikey for that introduction. Um, this episode sees me and Kenny going into Darwin. Um, just taking a day off from fishing. The other boys are going fishing and uh, we'll just see how we go. And unfortunately, we can't do Darwin justice in just a few hours, but we give it a fair crack.
Well, good day everyone. Welcome back to the next episode. Today is going to be a bit of a mixed bag. So Kenny and I are heading into Darwin for a bit of sightseeing and to get that uh trailer tire fixed we blew a few days ago and Slip and Dave are heading up the river.
I don't know where they've gone, but uh we'll go and go and see and find them. We'll start this episode off. Ah, here he is. So you're going to hit the Merry today?
>> Mary River today. We thought we'd try to put another string in the bow. Another uh another river we haven't well we fished the Marriott Shady but downstream. So we're going to fish the upstream section of Marri. It's nice and close.
>> Cool. All right. So they're going to be filming on the boat. We're going to be filming in Darwin and we'll put an episode together. Who knows what this is going to end up like. So just stay tuned.
Before we get to Darwin, we go and check out a little hidden gem that not many people know about. You might have to look this place up, but it's well worth the rock scramble to go and have a look at this amazing artwork.
Hidden among the rugged landscape of the Northern Territory are the incredible granite carvings created by the Japanese artist Mitsuki Tannabi.
Using simple hand tools and remarkable patience, Tannabe transform massive granite boulders into detailed works of art that blend human creativity with the natural environment.
I'll leave a link in the description below on where to find this place off the Arnham Highway. It is a scramble to get there, but as I said, it's well worth it.
Okay. And on to Darwin.
>> Beautiful.
>> Well, Kenny and I have made it to Darwin and we are currently on the Stokes Hill Wararf and uh just going to have a bit of a look around here. There's plenty of people fishing.
Beautiful day. Big gas tanker coming in.
Awesome.
The tropical city of Darwin is Northern Territories capital and has a rich and resilient history that's shaped by culture, conflict, and survival.
Named after naturalist Charles Darwin in 1839, the city became an important northern port and gateway to Australia's top end.
During World War II, Darwin was bombed by the Japanese forces in 1942, making it the largest attack ever carried out on Australian soil, with more bombs being dropped on Darwin than there was on Pearl Harbor.
Records show that 252 people lost their lives that day. They are now resting peacefully in the Adelaide River War Cemetery.
The city was rebuilt only to face another disaster when Cyclone Tracy devastated Darwin on Christmas Eve in 1974.
Unfortunately, Cyclone Tracy took 66 people's lives.
Today, Darwin is known for its layback lifestyle, multicultural community, and it is a great spot to jump off to start your Northern Territory adventure.
Kenny and I had been invited out to lunch. So, to kill a bit of time, we wandered around Stokes's warf and played tourist for a little bit.
Let's see what the other BS are up to.
boat ramp looks a bit sketchy.
Let's go down and just check for crocs.
No, no crocs. All right, let's launch the boat.
Meanwhile, Kenny and I are soaking up a bit of the World War II history that Darwin has to offer.
Quick check on the other boys to see if they've got any fish.
I'm tipping. That's a no.
So, we've been invited out for lunch by Ash and Mikey at the Darwin Trailerbo Boat Club.
Darwin's a very easy city to get around and it didn't take us long to get across the town to our lunch destination.
>> Well, bit of a treat for lunch today.
caught up with Ash from King Ash Bay and we are at the Darwin Trailer Boat Club.
>> We're at a lap.
>> So, apparently, so it looks pretty good.
So, we'll go and have a feed.
>> And before we have lunch, let's check in on the other BS.
Still no fish by the looks.
Now, very privileged today. I'm with the guys in the golf >> the 18 >> Mikey Cunningham Ash Garner >> King Ashbay legends. So get on to >> Royalty.
>> Royalty. Sorry. Sorry Mikey. Actually we were royalty yesterday. We hit King Kai up at Adelaide River. So good. Was it?
>> No. It was awesome. It was awesome.
>> And no invite. That's that's that's right.
>> Well, it was Well, put it this way. It was an experience. So, those of you that don't know Kai, don't recognize him.
Google man hits crocodile with fry pan.
>> That's it. And >> there you go.
>> World famous. You You broke the internet, didn't you?
>> That I I think I did. I had nothing to do with the with him complicated, but that's all right.
>> That's all right. Yeah.
>> But, uh, yeah. So, Kai's been here for a very long time, and it's one of those little destinations in the Northern Territory. If you're up here, it's a musto. I agree with that. Thank you.
>> But what I'll do, I'll put a a link to Guys in the Golf podcast with these guys and Mikey's fishing channel, which if as I said previously, if you want to know about King Ash Bay, jump on to Mikey's channel cuz he is all over it. So, privilege having lunch with these two gentlemen today. And um we'll just see what the day brings. Meanwhile, back on the river.
Still no fish.
The Darwin Trailer Boat Club is located right on the shores of Fanny Bay.
It has spectacular views. The food is fantastic and it's a riper little spot just to kick back and relax for the afternoon.
Well, that was lunch done and dusted with the guys from the golf. So, we're going to go have look bit more around Darwin and see what it's got to offer.
Well, we thought we'd come down to the mangrove boardwalk. walk here at East Point in Darwin, but unfortunately it's closed due to storm damage.
Oh well, we'll uh head back. We've got a couple more spots to stop off before we start heading back to Bartut for our last night there.
So, we're going to get some bilong from this little place on the Stewart Highway at Winnelli, and we'll go and pick up my trailer tire and then we'll head back to camp.
This is a beautiful beach, but unlike the beaches down south, it's not advisable to swim here with crocodiles, sharks, and box jellyfish all inhabiting the waters.
Right. Let's just take you for a spin down the CBD of Darwin.
Main Street Darling.
And it looks like we've hit peak hour.
Quick check in on the other boys. And it looks like they've changed rivers and they're on the Adelaide again.
Now, I've heard about this place for quite a while on Facebook. They do a fair bit of social media advertising.
So, we're coming past. So, we thought we'd go and try and boil.
So, what is bilong? Bilong is a traditional South African dried meat snack. It's similar to jerky, but it's made actually quite differently. It's usually made from beef or game meats like venison, which are cured with vinegar, salt, coriander, pepper, and spices before being air dried over several days. Unlike jerky, bilong is typically thicker, less sweet, and air dried rather than cooked or smoked. The texture can range from soft and tender to very dry depending on how it's prepared. But it is not jerky. So just who or what is boen billong? Well, Mr. Bogan was born and raised in South Africa and remembers his grandfather making bilong from an early age. He has carried on this South African tradition with Mrs. Bogan who is fiercely proud to be Aussie born and raised. Together they're affectionately known as bogans amongst their friends and family. Hence bogan bilong. A merging of two cultures making bloody good tucker. As well as billong. The shop is stacked full of South African goodies.
I'll put the contacts in the description below, but I thoroughly recommend dropping in and saying good day to the Bogans and trying some of their build next time you're in Darwin.
Well, that's the last stop in Darwin.
I've just picked the tires up from Territory Tires on the Stewart Highway at Winnelli. So, here, come and see Andrew. They've looked after me really, really well. Um, fixed up the tire. So, we've got a spare for the trailer for the trip home. So hopefully I won't blow that. All right, we'll start heading back towards uh the bark hut and unfortunately start to pack up and uh head south tomorrow. So if you've enjoyed this episode, thanks for watching. Please like and subscribe to the channel. It really really helps. And we'll see you in the next episode.
Before we go, let's just check on the other guys just one more time.
Let's just say the score today was crocodile one boys zero.
Well, thanks everyone if you've made it this far. Thank you so much for your support. But don't turn off because next is a bit of a preview of our last episode of Full Sand North. And I guarantee you this will be the best one we've done.
So, we're putting in some cherapen pots, which are freshwater prawns.
They're good bait >> and and good tucker. He's an old big fella. Oh, that's a donkey.
Deadly here, >> this one here.
>> Yep.
>> Drop dropped the bigger one than this.
We've all been busted off.
some source.
>> Turn off because the next few
