Top 5 Dangerous Space ObjectsAdded:
These are five space objects scientists are watching closely. First, Bennu. This asteroid has a small chance of impacting Earth in the 2020s. That's why NASA tracked it for years and even collected samples. Next, Ditimos. Not because it's dangerous, but because we tested how to stop one. In 2022, NASA crashed a spacecraft into it and successfully changed its orbit. Then Hal's comet.
It's not a direct threat today, but its debris crosses Earth's path, creating meteor showers. Now, Swift Tuttle, a massive comet over 20 km wide. It crosses Earth's orbit. And if it ever hit us, the impact would be far worse than the one that wiped out the dinosaurs. And finally, Apous. On April 13th, 2029, this asteroid about 375 m wide, will pass less than 32,000 km above Earth. That's closer than geostationary satellites, which orbit at around 35,000 km. It will even be visible to the naked eye from parts of Europe, Africa, and Asia.
When it was first discovered in 2004, scientists thought it might hit Earth.
Later observations ruled that out. But this flyby is still a rare opportunity to study a massive asteroid up close.
