Professional car painting requires meticulous preparation, systematic panel removal, and careful masking to achieve a quality finish, with the shell being the most challenging part due to its size and complexity; effective time management is critical as unexpected challenges like paint spills, missing components, and weather delays can significantly impact the project timeline, requiring adaptability and problem-solving skills to complete the job successfully.

PAINTING MY R32 SKYLINE IN 5 DAYSHinzugefügt:
It's time to paint my R32 skyline. This skyline needs to be prepped, painted, reassembled, and out of the door in less than 5 days. If I miss the deadline, I'm going back home with a half painted car.
But even as a qualified painter, things never go smooth.
>> I'm so annoying.
>> I don't know what to do now. So, I've just put the car on bake so the primer can all set properly. And I'm going to be working on this bumper first. This is fiberglass, so we're not baking it because it will crack and do all sorts of weird things. So, I'm going to be prepping this and then we'll get to work on the car.
I've absolutely got to be on top form this week because I only have 5 days to paint this car before I get kicked out.
I've had to make a plan as we are so pushed for time. So, day one is prep and paint the front bumper and spoiler. Day two is prep and paint the shell, the biggest and hardest part of the car. Day three is paint the doors and the wings.
Day four is paint the bonnet, boot lid, and rear bumper. And day five is all the little finishing bits like wing mirrors and door handles. After lunchtime on the first day, I realized everything was taking longer than planned and I hadn't actually made much progress. So far, all I managed to do is get this bumper sanded and the spoiler sanded. The plan is to get the bumper and the spoiler painted tonight, but I'm really even running out of time. So, we'll see what happens. Thankfully, I did manage to get the spoiler and bumper in the booth and started to paint.
But then I had an accident. I dropped a pot of paint which went everywhere.
What a great start. Okay, this is day two of me respraying the Skyline. As you can see, not a lot has been done so far.
I've managed to paint the front bumper and the spoiler. Now, I'm not going to show you the color just yet, but it is incredible. I'm so in love with it. I can't wait for you to see it. Anyway, today, so we're going to be doing the shell today, hopefully. I'm really wary that we're running out of time. So, I've got to take wings off, bonnet off, doors off. I'm going to start with the wings this morning and then I'll take the doors off cuz it's easier access. But then we're going to be prepping the shell and hopefully painting it today.
So, first up where the wings.
This is where I snapped a bolt on each side. So, that's going to be very fun to fix.
Removing panels here is a lot easier than it was back at my workshop as there is plenty of space and panel stands. So, it felt like luxury and meant I didn't have to lie on a dirty floor when taking the wings off, which was a bonus for sure. The doors on this car are extremely heavy though, so I did need a helping hand. I quickly masked up the inside of the car so I didn't get dust all over the seats and I could begin blocking down the quarters ready for paint. Then a quick blow off and we'll get it in the oven.
So, I've gotten everything prepped up.
It's all been buzzed down, all the shell. We've taken all the panels off and now I'm just masking it up. Now, original plan was to get it painted tonight. It's probably not going to happen depending what time I get finished masking up, but it looks like I've got to mask up a lot. There's loads of little gaps everywhere, which puts us behind a little bit, so I'm a bit stressed out, but we'll see what we can do. As I started masking up, I realized in order to paint the rear arches, I would need to jack the car up and put it on jack stands so I could take the wheels off. But as it's a gritted booth, it certainly wasn't easy.
Because all the inside of the car is exposed with no doors or wings, I have to make sure that no paint gets inside.
And so every little gap needs to be masked up and covered. But this took so much more time than I had originally planned. and I was already behind.
Even though I was quick with masking it all up, I just wasn't quick enough. So, things didn't go to plan and I'm really stressed out about it. I did I was meant to be painting this today and it's now 4:00, so I don't have the time to paint it. So, I'm going to be painting it first thing in the morning. Uh, but it's put our timeline like yeah, a little bit too far back. So, I'm a bit stressed out. But it's all masked off and it's ready to go. So, just wish me luck. So, we'll do it in the morning.
This is day three and today we're a bit earlier because I managed to convince them to let me in a bit earlier considering the time scale of everything going on. Uh, so far still have not painted anything other than the spoiler and the bumper that I did on the first day. The shell is ready to go. It's in there. I'm going to start painting it soon. And today I'm going to reveal the color to you. And it's incredible. You are going to love it or hate it, but we'll see. So, I'm just mixing the wet on wet at the moment. This is what I'm using. Multif filler by Mihi. Great stuff. Uh, so I'm going to spray that and then we'll spray the color. Got loads of color mixed up. I don't know if you've seen what color it is, but you'll find out in a minute.
I am so excited to reveal the mystery color. But first, I'm starting by spraying the wet on wet, which is basically a sealer to any burnroughs in the paint or primer. But problem number one was that being 5'5, I really struggled to reach the roof now that the car was on jack stands. So, I tried to use a stool, but it was still very difficult.
>> All right. So, do you want to see the color reveal? Are you ready?
It's pink, obviously. What did you think it was going to be? So, I've got it in wet on wet. Uh, it didn't quite go exactly how I planned. I can't reach the top of the roof. I'm really struggling.
So, I'm going to try, but I need like a a taller stand, but I I don't think there is one. So I because the quarter is right there and then the roof is uh we'll see what happens. Got the color ready. Got enough. Do you think I've got enough?
Let me have a look at this bit of crap in there. I'm going to have to live out.
It's just reaching over. Look.
I can't touch this. If I could lean on this somewhere and go like that, I could put my full weight on it. There's nothing I can lean on cuz that's straight through. That's straight through. Unless I touch this.
I have to do that. Just have a thumb print there.
You want to paint this? I don't want to do it.
There's a lot of burnroughs on this pillar. So, it's I'm just making sure there's no edges or anything like that.
I can't see anything cuz it's so white.
You can't see the difference.
So, I said I needed a bigger stand.
This is what we've got. Oh my god. Oh my god.
So, in theory, yeah, this is all right. Do you know what I need? I need to be hung from the roof like Spiderman.
All right, let's do it.
Now, this stand was much better than the stool I had earlier, but the problem was it was only about an inch away from the rear quarter. So, I was terrified I would end up touching the wet paint and ruining it. So, I had to be really careful. Once I started painting though, I fell in love with the color all over again. And it was such a great feeling seeing it all come together. watching paint dry.
I can already see there's a black bit, a bit of dirt in there.
Once I had done the three layers of base coat, it was time to clear coat. I knew this was going to be difficult because there was so much to cover. And once I had done one side and gotten to the next, the first side would already be quite dry and so would have a lot of orange pill. So, it was a game of getting around the car as fast as I could. There was a little bit of orange peel, but overall I was happy with how well I managed to do. Oh my god, look at it. It's pink. I'm so happy with how it's turned out. That is the hardest paint job I've ever done. I'm not going to lie. Oh my god, I was so stressed. I thought the roof was patchy. I thought I can't get in all the little angles and everything, but it's done. It's done.
The shell is done. I'm so happy. We're really pushed for time. So, trying to get everything out the way. We put the wheels back on. Going to get the doors on these stands and then bring the two wings in. Paint the two wings. Paint the doors. So then tomorrow we can actually put it back on the car and not have panels around everywhere. Oh, I'm knackered.
Now it was time to push the car out and get the doors and wings in. I definitely left my mark on the booth floor.
I'm sweating so much.
It was well into the afternoon now due to the time it took to paint the shell, but I couldn't lose any more time and I absolutely had to get the doors and wings done today. But I was cutting it quite close now as every day is a sharp 5:00 p.m. finish. So, I had to rush it a little bit, which is never a good idea when it comes to paint, especially as due to this color, it takes about three layers for the base coat to cover fully.
Then it was time for the clear coat, which I wanted to do three coats of so I could have a good amount of material to flatten polish later on. This meant I had to wait about 5 minutes in between coats. And the easiest way of checking if it's ready for another coat is by touching the masking tape. And if it's sticky, you know you're good to go ahead with another coat.
Then I laid the door flat so the clear could level out.
I'm hungry and tired, but it's looking incredible.
It's so much easier doing the doors and the wings rather than the shell. That was the hardest thing I've ever painted.
I am so tired. I feel like it's 7:00 at night, but it's only I think it's 4:00.
We've got an hour left tonight. But I've got another problem now, you know. But guess what? On Friday when we've got to take the car back, it's going to be raining. There's no windows.
So, I'm stressing the hell out because when we took it here, I put some crash wrap on it. Yeah. And like covered it up all up. And then when we got here, it was all off. Like the wind had blown it all off. So, if I do that and it's raining, everything's going to be wet.
So, I don't know what to do at the moment. We're going to have to find like an enclosed trailer or something, but I've only got like a day's notice. Who the hell is going to be able to do that?
This is day four. There is only one day left to go. Well, just today. So, as you can see, I've painted this beautiful shell. It's looking fantastic. Also got all of these done. I'm just a little bit scared that because they were painted at different times, maybe the color won't quite match to the shell. Uh so, that's playing on my mind a little bit. I didn't really sleep last night because of that cuz I was like, did I do the same amount of coats? I don't know. So, we've got to get all these back on because there's not enough space. And then I've got to do the bonnet, which is here, but it's also primed underneath as well. So, I've got to spend hours trying to scuff the inside of that, then paint that. Then we've got the boot lid, which is here. Uh, is that again, all the inside as well needs doing. And rear bumper. Then all sorts of little bits like these. So, there's still a lot of work to do. And we've got to leave Friday afternoon, so we've got to smash it. Even with all the stress, I was absolutely over the moon with how the skyline was coming together. So, now we're just going to try and fit up those panels back on the car without damaging them. So, that's going to move on. Now was the moment of truth to see if the color matched or not.
Panic over. The color matches. It's all right. I literally lost so much sleep over this. I thought it wouldn't match.
We'll see what it looks like outside, but it's all right. But there is another problem. There's no check strap in it.
Uh, and I don't know where I've put it.
You know, the bit that it joins the doors together so that you can leave it open. So, I have no idea what I've done with that. I really hope it's at home cuz it's I've just looked through the whole car and it's not here. And that's quite an important component which would cost a lot if I've lost it. So, now it was time to put the other door and wing on. But, I'm not very good at putting panels back on. So, I was terrified I would damage the paintwork and ruin the hard work I put in. And another problem I ran into was that the bolts for the wing just kept crossthreading.
Well, I've just been really clever and took the paint off of the ratchet there.
So, I'm going to put some Vaseline on it just in case it's gone to metal. That should stop it rusting. Right now, it was time for the other wing. And of course, it was all going too smoothly.
Now, >> there's a bit that I missed. Basically, it just looks horrendous. First of all, we got primer all over here.
I don't know what to do now. How can I paint under there? I've had enough. I also found some oil on the floor. That's gearbox 100%. Another headache to add to my list. Talking about headaches, I still didn't have transport for tomorrow, so I was messaging everyone I knew. But the chances of getting one within 24 hours notice were slim.
And then I got even more bad news.
So the timeline has now changed and the car's got to be ready by tomorrow at 100 p.m. I thought I had the afternoon tomorrow, but now I don't. Uh, so the pressure's really on. Trying to get everything prepped up. Boot lace, bumper, and bonnet painted tonight. and then all the little bits like the wing mirrors in the morning and then rush around trying to fill it up and get it out by one o'clock.
At this point, it started to feel like the world was against me. I was now so far behind that I wasn't even sure if I would be able to finish the car on time.
The good news was that I managed to find transport, but they're on a very tight schedule. So, by 100 p.m. tomorrow, everything had to be ready. Slight problem. I didn't have the guts to take these out. And I've tried masking it up, but it won't go in the thing. So, I think I'm just going to have to paint over it. And then hope it peels off nicely. It doesn't peel off the rest of it as well. And there's a little look at this. There's a little rubber gasket there as well that can't quite get off.
So, that's going to get paint on it as well. And I masked the gasket around it and then stuck a piece of plastic in between so it holds the handle open. Oh, and then I got even more bad news. So, apparently I've got to get everything done today now. Painted today. So, little bit stressed out. A little bit.
Just a little bit cuz I got to be out at 5. So, yeah. I don't know. Uh, got all the bits in there. Getting cleaned off at the moment. Uh, then I just got to hurry up and paint it as quick as I can.
Love rushing paint. It was time to put my big boy shoes on. Literally, my feet were hurting, so I had to put on my trainers, but this meant I had to mask them up so they didn't get paint everywhere. The booth was looking like an obstacle course. It's actually quite impressive we managed to get everything in here. Since Meepa wanted me to paint everything today, they also helped me set everything up because it would have been impossible to do myself.
And now it was time to paint.
stress. Ah, I don't I'm overwhelmed. Okay, bye.
Oh, this right on the edge completely.
So nice.
Good morning. Today is the last day. We have to fit up the skyline and everything's in the oven baking at the moment that I painted yesterday, which by the way was very stressful. Uh because I had to get everything painted yesterday cuz there's no painting on today. So, got to fit everything up, get it ready. We've got 4 hours, which sounds like a lot, but it's not considering how difficult it is to align this boot lid to get the bumpers on, the aftermarket bumpers. It's It's a lot to do, and I don't know if I'm going to make it because transport is coming here at 1:00 on the dot. So, we've got to be out at 1:00. And there's a lot of bits that I can't actually find. I had everything in little bags like this, all labeled, and half of it's just not even there anymore. So, I I don't know what's going on. Um, and I don't remember what goes where. So, now I've put the bits that I painted yesterday on bake cuz I didn't have time to bake it yesterday cuz it was all rush rush rush. I don't even know what we're going to start with. We probably I'll probably put the front bumper on first because that's really difficult to do. Maybe Yeah, probably the rear bumper, then boot lid and bonnet, and then try and figure out maybe how the door handles go in.
Although, I'm I think I'm still missing pieces for that. I don't know if they're at home. I don't know where they are.
So, next I'm going to try and put the front bumper on first. I think I wasn't sure if the front bumper had to be removed like last time when loading it onto the transport. So, I used as many cable ties as I could to be able to take it off quickly.
Sad times.
That's the only one I got though, so it's all right. I'm very wary that it's going to rub against the wing that I've just done. So, I'm going to put a bit of cloth as a gasket.
Don't know if that's a great idea. So, in theory, if I just slide it in there, squish it in there.
Come on.
I think it's falling out.
All right, we'll try that.
I don't want to tighten it too much.
Once the front bumper was on, it was time for the rear bumper, which was a lot easier.
More cable ties. It's the only way to put a bumper on, right?
To have clips under here, but I don't have any. Now, the boot lid, which in theory shouldn't be too difficult, but no matter how hard we tried, we couldn't get it to open with the latch.
So, the boot latch won't open with the cable thing. So, I'm going to try and investigate.
It's not my first time in a boot. Okay.
Bye.
>> No.
Hello.
Torch is on. Right. So, if you go and undo the latch. I had to fix this because once the lights were in, there would be no way of opening the boot.
I did nothing. And it's fixed.
And my back hurts. Apparently, there's free food out there.
I'm getting out now. I don't even know what I did. I wish I could say, "Yeah, I fixed it, but I don't know what I did. I didn't do anything. Free food."
With only a few hours left, it was now time for the last panel to go back on.
But of course, it didn't go as planned.
gone and chipped the wing.
Look at it.
I'm putting the bonnet on.
I'm so upset.
This was the worst thing that could happen. With less than 2 hours left, there was really no time to paint. But I had to. It had taken the paint off down to bare metal. If I didn't fix it now, it would start to rust. Thankfully, the big bosses at Meeper were understanding and let me use the booth one last time.
But I wasn't really sure if it was going to be ready before the transport showed up.
Okay, so this is the time. It's 12:56.
Transport is getting here at 1:00 and my wing is still in the oven being baked.
It doesn't even have a wing on. So I hope the guy's nice and is a little bit lenient. I'm laughing, but I'm really really stressed inside. Okay, thankfully the transport got stuck in traffic, so I had an extra 15 minutes to put the wing back on and get the car ready to go.
Okay, so transport is here, but it's raining and there's cars parked on the other side. So, we're going to have to push it out in the rain still, even though it's got no windscreen. Uh, but the good thing is we did get transport that is enclosed. So, that's that's a good thing. Just waiting for him to load up now out here. And then we're going to have to push the car in somehow.
Because space was so tight, I had to borrow some skates from a nearby mechanic to turn the car around. I had no idea what I was doing.
There was no chance the car would make that sharp turn. So, we had to reposition the trailer and push it in straight.
But the front bumper was too low for that angle, so we had to reposition it again. Big shout out to Oliver at Apex Auto Transport. I put him through a lot that day, and he didn't even flinch. 10 out of 10 customer service. Also, shout out to all the lovely mechanics next door who helped us push the car in.
The stress was almost over.
My god, that was a nightmare. But the car is finally on the ramp. We had to have three guys pushing it. Oh lord, this is crazy. But we made it.
Basically, we made it. We just got to get back now on the Dartford crossing.
And it's not looking good on the M25.
But honestly, I didn't even care.
Sitting in traffic for 5 hours was worth the fact that I now had my dream car in the most beautiful color. A color that nobody has painted before. A color that represents me and my brand. And a car that I'm finally proud of.
This had been a hell of a journey. I put my blood, sweat, and tears into this rebuild. And in the end, it was all worth it.
So, we finally made it back at the unit.
Oh my god, it's been so stressful. Crazy few weeks. So, I'm going to be doing a lot more videos like this. If you want to see them, make sure you subscribe and hit the like button. And I'll see you in the next one.
Christmas.
