[00:00:08]When you live in Canada, investing in Canadian dividend paying companies is a highly tax efficient strategy. [music] And this is because Canadian residents can claim the dividend tax credit, which significantly lowers the amount of personal [music] tax you pay on that investment income.

[00:00:23]But, once you move and become a non-resident [music] for tax purposes, your tax rules actually shift. You no longer use the dividend tax credit and instead, the Canada Revenue Agency applies a part 13 non-resident withholding tax.

[00:00:39]By default, your [music] brokerage is required to deduct a flat 25% from your dividends before the money reaches your account. But, [music] there is some good news for proactive planners. If you are moving to a country that does have a tax treaty with Canada, you can often reduce that withholding tax [music] from 25% down to just 15%.

[00:01:00]To secure this lower rate, you must update your brokerage with [music] your actual foreign address so that they can issue you an official NR4 tax slip [music] instead of a T5.
