The Sea Battle That Saved GreeceAdded:
A narrow stretch of water allowed a smaller Greek fleet to destroy Persia's massive naval invasion force against all odds. Near Athens in 480 BC, Greek warships trapped and shattered much of Persia's enormous invading fleet. After burning Athens, Xerxes expected his enormous fleet to crush the remaining Greek resistance [music] at sea completely and decisively. Themistocles forced Persia's larger fleet into cramped waters where coordinated movements suddenly collapsed into confusion. The Persian fleet lost hundreds of ships, forcing Xerxes to abandon plans for conquering mainland Greece. The Greek victory at Salamis permanently weakened Persian expansion and protected the independence of [music] many Greek city-states. At Salamis, geography became a weapon that changed the survival and future of ancient Greece forever [music] and beyond.
