How to Create a Bass Line that Grooves Using Only 2 Simple Shapes

[00:00:01]Today, I have something so cool for you all. It's going to completely transform your playing and it's very, very practical. It's something you can take to the jam session right now. Right now, whether you're playing in church, jam session, band rehearsal, building a bassline, creating something. It's going to be very, very useful. Here it is.

[00:00:17]It's pretty simple. I'm going to show you two tricks using the same concept. 1 5 [music] 8. Okay, we all know that.

[00:00:26]But, you can add the nine.

[00:00:29]Okay, maybe some of you know that, also.

[00:00:31]But, this works for major and minor.

[00:00:34]Check this out.

[00:00:54]>> [music] >> Even prettier.

[00:00:56]Now, here is the first trick. You can just play this kind of a slide.

[00:01:02]>> [music] >> Just make sure to pluck the the octave strong enough so it will resonate for both slides. So, again, C major, let's put it in context.

[00:01:14]>> [music] >> C major, C minor, no problem.

[00:01:22]Okay? So, this slide it might You might feel some pain at the beginning. You might feel some pain, but that only means that you're growing a thicker skin and you'll be able to do that because the slide is like uh.

[00:01:36]>> [music] >> And like I said, works on major, minor.

[00:01:42]Let's try it on E flat.

[00:01:46]>> [music] >> Cool slide. By the way, you can even play it in double time.

[00:01:55]>> [music] >> So, every time you play a song let's go to F.

[00:02:04]>> [music] >> Brings a lot of color.

[00:02:13]You can even skip the octave >> [music] >> and go straight to the nine, something like that. Let's try it in G.

[00:02:22]Why not?

[00:02:23]Works in any key.

[00:02:26]>> [music] >> But, notice that in this case I'm starting the slide on the octave, but I'm just not playing it.

[00:02:35]>> [music] >> Like here.

[00:02:37]It's just a slide to the nine starting [snorts] on the eighth note. So, I'm sorry on the octave.

[00:02:44]Let's go back to C.

[00:02:46]Woo.

[00:02:47]>> [music] >> Let's go to G minor.

[00:02:52]So cool, sounds so convincing, [music] so interesting, and and yet so simple.

[00:02:57]Um Now, that's just the first trick. I want to show you now the second one. The second one, okay, we're going to we're not going to do or use a slide, but we're going to use just a 159.

[00:03:09]Now, this takes some flexibility.

[00:03:11]>> [music] >> Oops.

[00:03:20]>> [music] >> If you guys know a message in a bottle by the the Police, um goes something like that.

[00:03:28]>> [music] >> Not sure about the key. Let me know in the comments.

[00:03:33]So, it's a really nice strategy to open up your sound and play something that is both major, both minor, easy to access, easy to think about, and really lifts, it can really lift a song. You're playing a groove, you're on stage.

[00:03:49][music] Mhm. [music] >> Again, works on major and minor. Right now, I'm in B flat [music] B flat.

[00:04:04]We got the slide. We got >> [music] >> this slide and we got this arpeggio.

[00:04:16]Let's try D minor.

[00:04:18]>> [music] >> We're going to go from F to D minor.

[00:04:24]>> [music] >> Basically, the same chord, right?

[00:04:30]>> [music] [music] >> Yeah.

[00:04:43]Okay. So, basically, this is it. That's That's the trick I wanted to show you.

[00:04:49]Again, super accessible, sounds great on minor and major. It sounds interesting and really brings a lot of color to your playing.
