Proper CVT transmission maintenance requires verifying fluid levels using manufacturer specifications (Nissan CVT requires 51mm from bottom, with acceptable range of 48-57mm), ensuring fluid completely covers the dipstick tube rather than just touching the side, and performing systematic gear learning procedures including clearing learning values, shifting through P-N-R-D positions, and manually cycling gears to resolve jitter issues.

SATURN, MELTED EGR. ROGUE, CVT P2. RAM DUALLY DIAG, LOF. DAY ON FLAT RATE 947追加:
Welcome back to the channel. So glad you're here.
I'm Jimmy and we're making it work. If you're new, we're going to spend a day on flat rate, fixing cars, doing Nissan CVT transmissions.
Whatever it takes to keep the world moving, that's what we're going to do.
Tell you one thing, we're going to try to have a good time.
Um we always learn something, we always have a little fun.
Sometimes a little too much fun, some might say.
But we're going to do our best to make it worthwhile watching this video today.
75° already this morning.
It's headed for the low 90s. No surprise, it's spring.
Spring in Florida, that's what you get. We got a Jeep out in the parking lot. We got a Lincoln that broke an axle.
So, we got some stuff going on.
Got a Dodge dually that's here for a diesel drivability issue.
I think I mentioned that yesterday if you saw yesterday's video.
But uh I'm anxious to get started.
See what we can do today to make it a productive day.
Let's finish getting the shop open up.
See what we can do. Stay tuned.
All right.
Let's do this thing. We got the battery in. We got the battery tray. We got the air box going in. We got Things are happening.
Uh It's Nissan stuff.
Uh I noticed push pins are missing from here. We're going to do something about that.
Uh what else?
I also noticed uh this little clip thing is not holding up well, but it seems okay.
That's just to keep most of the hot air from going in the air inlet.
You just take all this off and buy it on eBay anyway.
Only if you want to go racing.
Um So, I got to get push pins for this. We got to get uh The dipstick measurement is 51 mm from the bottom. So, I got a universal dipstick will do.
The specification's actually 48 to 57 mm or something like that, which is a pretty big window, I thought.
But, we'll see.
Uh Get my clamps tight.
This just pushes in place. Hoses back, brake hoses.
It's about ready to fire this thing up.
There is a special tool to remove the dipstick cover.
They show this little tool that you put under here, it hooks and pulls it off, but haven't needed one yet. We'll see if we do this Yep. Okay, with this special tool.
Let's see.
Need a light.
Need to use the light where I can see it.
Now, I don't know if I'm going to be able to find the release, but we'll see.
Easier than it looks.
Oh my goodness.
Oh, Nissan.
Don't worry, I'm going to speed this up like I do, so you guys don't have to spend 15 minutes watching me fumble with a cap on a dipstick.
Thanks to the marvelous engineers at Nissan and Renault.
All right, that's where it is now.
So, we know we can add a quart or two.
We're going to start it up.
Check it with it running, of course.
Just want to make sure there's some fluid in it before we fire it up.
Put one more quart in it just to feel better about it.
Oh, did I tell you guys yesterday, too?
I spotted a temperature um There's little glue-on tabs that monitor temperature just know if something's been overheating. There's one on the side of this box.
Like the engine's been changed at some point, too.
Kind of interesting.
I'll show you in a second here.
I know it's under filled at least a quart, maybe two or three, probably.
So, I'm going to at least add the one quart, and then we'll fire it up, but let me show you this.
Let me show you this.
See that tab down there?
That doesn't come from the factory unless the used car lot put it on. I don't know.
Let's fire it up.
All right.
Goes in the gear and all that good stuff.
Not sure what that's about.
It'll touch the bottom of the pan.
All right.
Just put The fluid that's on there isn't touching the side of the dipstick tube. I'm going to add two more quarts.
I don't think there's anything on the dipstick even though it went into gear.
While I'm thinking of it, top off the overflow.
Little splash of coolant in the cooling system. We lost about a little over half a gallon yesterday taking the transmission out and and the trans cooler stuff like that, so.
Before we run it too much more I can get that on the max line.
Fire this thing back up and we'll check our uh transmission fluid get it 100% full.
It didn't It didn't take quite a gallon.
So I like I think we lost two or three quarts.
Plus it gave this time to drain out a little bit. The The fill tube can mess with you because the side of this will hit the fill tube and make it look like there's fluid, but it's got to be all the way across, not just on the side. That's the only way I knew it wasn't quite full.
It can It can burn you if you're if you haven't done a lot of this kind of thing.
So you really got to pay attention.
Sometimes if you're not sure let it sit 5 minutes, walk away, do something else, come back then the fluid will have settled out of the dipstick mostly.
Now I still have to erase the transmission learn data.
But I got to get the fluid level right first.
I don't want to be running it with three or four quarts low on fluid to set the clutch data and the fluid data and all.
Got to be full.
Give me my dipstick back, turkey.
Are you kidding me?
What are the odds of that?
It looks to me like it's only here, so another quart.
Just to be sure.
You can see how spacebook fluid hasn't touched that.
Let me get this fluid level set. That's not too exciting.
We'll hop in there with the scanner and do the learn parameters.
Of course, we got to update the top down one since we haven't fired it up in a while.
This is the last, of course, BMW. You guys know, the slowest one.
It updated about seven or eight brands and then it got to the BMW and we wait.
It's been about 10 minutes so far.
And the scanner is fast.
But their software must be very overwhelming.
Anyway, once that's done, I got the dongle in there.
We're going to go ahead and see what we got to do. I'm sure we got to get in the vehicle. Probably put it in the gear and that kind of thing. Hold the brake.
Of course, that when you do that, of course.
Uh wheels torque. I don't know if I filmed it.
Customer came by to see how the progress was going.
That was pretty cool.
He was He missed the part where his old car was blown apart laying on the floor in the back.
But anyway, he's excited to get it back.
So.
All right, we'll come back.
Just past 50% now. You can see it's 9:14.
So.
Still going.
Finally installing at 9:20.
Ta-da!
Look at that.
High performance software update.
All right, let's go. Asian.
Nissan.
It's going to We're going to get in the car, I'm sure, here, but we're going to see. Automatic.
Read the VIN.
Confirm the VIN.
Confirm.
Auto scan.
I'm just going to check for codes first.
Clear some codes out.
Uh then we'll do an uh It's either going to be in hot functions or service mode kind of thing. Got TCM codes from before in the old transmission.
Let's see here.
These transmissions are pretty cut and dry if you saw the original video where I looked at it.
It's for a used car lot. They don't like to pay much money. They want you to do everything for half price and all that kind of stuff of course, but we did we had to do Basically the diagnosis was had a code for slipping and a code for I think it was 17 71 P0776 1715 and 776.
Two internal codes, so we're going to enter transmission.
We're going to go to special function.
We're going to turn the key on engine off and see if it asks me to restart it or not.
Clear learning value, clear memory data.
After this function is executed, gear jiggle may occur and the gear learning needs to be completed manually.
Okay, current status.
Press start.
Close the door.
Uh and vehicle and engine accelerator pedal depressed, selected gear R, no support is required.
Start.
Okay, let's go like this. Okay, let's go back.
Okay.
Accelerator pedal depressed. Should be brake pedal depressed I would think.
Selector lever R.
Conditions are not met. Okay, let's shut the engine off. Key on, engine off. Try that.
Okay.
Okay.
Accelerator pedal depressed.
Turn status complete.
So, it wanted the key on, engine off, gas pedal pressed, in reverse.
Complete. Put it back in park.
Clear learning value.
See what it says here. Erase learning value. Maintain the conditions below.
Vehicle and engine stop. Accelerator pedal depressed. Gear shift R.
Start.
Complete.
Turn it off. Restart the end vehicle. If the gear jitter phenomenon occurs, manually successfully hang P, N, R, D gear three to five times. Move the vehicle forward and backwards several meters.
Complete the manual gear learning. You can solve the gear jitter phenomenon.
So, you turn the key off.
Wait a few moments.
Start it up.
Uh oh, I got to do calibration data and CVTF deterioration.
Forward clutch point learning. We're going to go through all of these one at a time, just like we did with those two.
Key system error, which I don't know why, but like seven out of 10 Nissans do that.
Key's right here. It lets me start it.
Stop, accelerator pressed, in reverse.
Reverse, accelerator pressed.
Start.
Complete.
Key off.
Okay.
Current status, continuous variable fluid deterioration rate.
Waiting for your operation start.
3950 clear.
The data of service will be data will be erased. Is it okay? Yes.
Now reading.
So, there's just a few little things you got to do to let it know you basically have put a new transmission in so you can start from scratch. That's all.
Next thing is going to be one more check of the fluid levels, shut the hood, take it for a drive and verify everything feels correct on the road. It'll feel a little odd at first, but the more you drive it, the more it'll kind of learn what it's supposed to be doing and things will get a little happier and it'll drive a little more normal.
I'll put probably 10 miles or so on it and then give it back to the customer and they'll finish the relearn which could take hundreds of miles sometimes for it to really fine-tune the way it's going to function.
All right, now that one's complete.
Engine brake.
Forward clutch learning point.
Vehicle stop, engine idling, gear select neutral, and brake pedal depressed.
Start.
Executing. Depress the brake and shift the selector lever to D.
Perform in R position to stop the learning. Set the selector lever in park.
Stop, neutral.
Brake pedal depressed, start.
Not bad.
Maybe it wants to Oh, the fluid temp's got to be a little warmer. Okay. I thought I had it running quite a while now.
Then we'll be ready for a road test.
Oh, you know it's time for a dually diesel, don't you?
Oil change, fuel filter, engine diag.
We don't work on diesels. We're going to work on this one cuz it's slow, I guess.
The um the transmission I did, I couldn't get it to show park and neutral, and I found out I had to write information into the TCM for the new transmission.
There must be some type of module in the transmission that lets the main transmission control module outside the transmission know that it was changed.
It's really mad about write not writing the data.
And it's a 260 character code, which you scan the little QR code on the transmission, which I had a picture of it, luckily. It also comes with a CD with that QR code.
And I put it in three of my scanners, and all of them said it was an invalid code.
So, after 2 hours, they called the programmer to come try to do it.
So, I haven't driven it yet.
This oil change has been out here a couple of days, so let me knock that out, and we'll see what else. I know we got this old Saturn here, too, no one wants to work on, so I'll probably end up on it on next cuz we'll see what happens.
Oh, I did get an alternator for this one, too, by the way. Just haven't got to it yet. I have to transfer the pulley over.
Uh we got a big old fuel filter for this thing.
It takes a big old oil filter, too, and it takes 13 quarts of 540 diesel oil.
So.
Going to do the oil change real quick.
We'll throw the scanner on it and see what's up.
Got a DEF light on intermittently, too, which if it has certain codes, it won't run the DEF regen.
Um what happens is it gets it gathers a lot of soot and stuff in this particulate canister.
This has a super heats.
Makes all the particles into the tiniest little tiny fragments.
When you do a regen, it kind of cooks it out even more and this thing gets super hot. So, you like you can't do stationary regens. You can force a stationary regen as long as it doesn't have certain codes.
When that happens, this thing gets so hot you can't be over any dry grass or I wouldn't even put it over wet grass cuz it will dry it out and set the grass on fire. That's how hot it gets. So, it's technology.
We're going to do an inspection, too.
It's got new back tires.
Front tires, they're not so new.
But, I really don't want to do tires on it.
I put it down anyway. Someone's just done these hoses.
I don't know who.
But, they're not looking at the check engine light. I know that much.
Yeah, the rear jack hose leaks still, so It's only been a couple of weeks. You can't fix that stuff real quick. Takes a while.
He just unplugged the air hose when we're not using it.
And we can't use the rear jack if we had to change rear tires or something.
Luckily, this one has new rear tires.
Doesn't matter.
Probably not easy to see, but the oil filter's in there.
I ran out of room in a big old dooley.
I ran out of room for a place to put the oil filter.
Well, doesn't want to turn, so that's the next part of the job.
I've got the I've turned it about a quarter of a turn so far, but I can only turn my my oil filter wrench about that much.
So, I'm turning it what I can, taking a break.
Turning it what I can, taking a break.
It's Looks like it's been on there a while, I guess. I don't know.
Hard to tell.
Of course, my filter strap wrench is not the best, but I can't I don't think I can see it from below with a cup. I don't know if I I don't have a cup that big anyway, now that I think about it. It's got a pretty big oil filter on it.
The problem is three out of four times it slips instead of turning the filter, so I'm going to keep going at it. I'm not going to bore you with it.
Put some clean engine oil on there.
Well, engine oil anyway.
There's nowhere to get this from underneath. There's a big cross member right under the filter. So, it ain't happening.
It'd be funny if I drop it and it falls out the bottom, huh?
Now, I can't see anything in there. I'm trying to guess where the threads are.
I got to have it.
Got it. I got it. Yay!
It's not as easy to get 0.5 hours nowadays as it used to be, but Now, because it's a diesel and it got a lot of vibration, I'm going to do what I normally don't.
I'm just give it a little bit of a bump with the strap wrench.
That's good.
This thing had a Mopar filter, so it must have been changed at the dealer. It had a Mopar oil change sticker on the windshield.
But, it was so old that it was faded.
There was no writing on it.
I'm hoping they just use Mopar filters wherever he had it changed and they didn't put a sticker on it.
It can't be the original.
Truck's got 150,000 mi on it.
I got one jug of 540 in there.
13 quarts.
I did look just for kicks at the dipstick. There's nothing on it.
>> [laughter] >> Which I thought.
I know these take at least 12 to 15 most of these diesels, but they get so much sulfur and carbon in the oil that they have to have a high oil volume.
Um the dipstick was also frozen in place. I had to spray it with Kroil while I did other things looking around.
And uh I got the dipstick out, but it I thought it was going to break.
That's what makes me wonder when the last time anyone's ever done oil on this thing, but not really my concern today, is it? I'm changing the oil and I'm going to look at the check engine light.
Nothing else really matters. So, though you know I I love this truck, buddy.
I think I overfilled this jug just a little bit.
I'll hold back a little.
Give it a minute.
Oh, the fuel filter I got to change is down there by the brake booster.
Uh it's not really a great place to do it, but just a little overfill, perfect.
Well, shouldn't even say a little. It's quite a bit, but it's got a big oil filter on it, so.
I got to put washer fluid in it. The oil change part will be done.
I just wish there was a better place to stand and do it.
Cuz the truck's so high and then the lift is I got to basically teeter on the edge of this ramp and try to reach down there.
That's where that filter is.
Drag the I dragged the ladder over here to see if that helps.
Um what I should have done is got my flashlight I can set down, but this one should do it.
Oh, yeah.
Let's see how tight this is.
Well, that's pretty tight.
I thought it would be.
And after you do this, you reset the uh the dash to let it put a new filter in it.
Before it is dropped, let's go ahead and close that up.
I'm sorry if you can't see back here, but I'm balancing on this ladder step and uh trying to get this thing done without anything happening.
I think should just pop up.
Feels really tight though. I'm going to get a screwdriver.
Uh-oh.
There it goes.
Ow.
Let that sit and drain a second.
It's been in there for a time.
Going to change that old ring.
I just watched a video on TikTok a guy He's like, "I just quit my job today."
I guess he called out sick.
And his boss said he wanted to see a note for he could let him back to work.
He worked there like 9 years.
He said, "I'm not going to the doctor.
The last time I went it was $700.
I just took the day off cuz my back hurt. My back was tweaked.
I was like, "I'm back ready to work today." The guy said, "I need a doctor's note for I can let you work."
He said, "Okay."
He went to Home Depot, got a bunch of totes, started hooking up his tools, and quit.
He's like, "I'm going to go do HVAC."
>> [laughter] >> He's been a mechanic for 17 years.
And he's like, "All right, that's enough."
At what point does the industry improve for mechanics?
I mean, I know they're all thieves, but besides that.
Just saying. I don't know.
Not really in the greatest of moods. I apologize, but uh It's been one of those days, you know, when you get It's really hard to put a smile on.
I got cut off twice. I people People for some reason, I'm going 5 mph over the speed limit, they pull in front of me, slam the brakes on and make a right turn in 25 ft after getting in front of me.
And I look and there's no one behind me.
It happened twice on the way into work this morning.
And then the Nissan, I couldn't get the to finish finish the initialization process.
And then once I got to a standstill, they gave me the diesel truck no one wanted to work on.
And he already warned me a heads-up, you might have to do that Saturn, no one wants to do that one either.
So.
And honestly, I don't mind.
If I make a good money, I'll do all the stuff no one wants.
It's when I'm doing all the stuff no one wants, and I have the least amount of hours in the shop, that I get real chippy.
And then they usually get mad at me, which is kind of weird.
It's You know, if you got someone bailing you out doing all the stuff no one else wants to do, and they have a bad paycheck, and it makes them sad, you should be going, "Well, man, I'm really sorry. Let me make it up to you.
What can I do?" Something instead instead of getting mad at them.
I don't understand that part, but it's uh another one of those things that you can't change that you deal with, or you don't deal with it.
Those are your options.
This is live, too. You got to be careful with your tools.
I think there's supposed to be a plastic cover on it, but there aren't.
All right. We reset the um fuel filter, and reset the oil change.
When I'm done with that, see if this thing runs.
Okay.
Um, the code is for injector DFE.
Uh, deep DEF, uh, directed exhaust fluid, something like that. I don't remember what it's called.
Uh, it injects injects a a a mildly acidic fluid that helps it burn sulfur particles and all that make uh, started off to make California happy. Now it's everybody, but they're still not happy, although that's what it was for.
Um, I'm going to lift it up and check the uh, injector.
It's supposed to be 11 to 13 ohms resistance.
We'll see if it's 11 to 13 ohms resistance. Very common failure, but I'm not going to just say go ahead and order one and then have it not fix it.
You guys know I hate that.
Well, that's going to do it.
Too much ohmages.
Supposed to be 11 to 13.
Very strict adherence.
Nothing else is acceptable.
So, it's going to need that injector. The problem is See them nuts?
Yeah.
That's not good. Just like those nuts.
This is South Main Auto type stuff.
What I might do is be proactive and start the soaking process right now in case he wants to fix it.
Well, let's put an injector in there, clear clear the codes, and verify that everything is good. Very rare occasions the wiring harness will act up, but I don't see any problems with that.
If the if it don't 11 to 13 ohms, then obviously going to have to look at the wiring.
Even PCMs on rare occasions, but that injector they get clogged up and things too. If the resistance is off it's something electrical inside.
but when you do take it out and change it, you also have to check that port and make sure there isn't a bunch of crystallized uh crystal meth in there or whatever.
So, that's a big old muffler, ain't it?
All right.
Kind of done horsing around with this one. We'll see if we get to fix it tomorrow. Oil change is done. Fuel filter maintenance is done. The resets are done. Washer fluid's topped off.
Tires are aired up.
One of the sensors doesn't read, but those are new tires. I'm wondering if they might have damaged one. We'll see if they want to look into that. We'll see if any more comes of this.
It's getting late.
Hasn't been much going on today.
Don't be jealous. You know what time it is?
The old Saturn they started to heard hissing and then they saw smoke and then the engine stalled.
I feel really bad about the whole ordeal. So, I'm going to help them out and see what's wrong with it.
Well, help them out sounds sounds like it's more free than it really is.
And now it's not free.
Um we're going to find out what's wrong with it and help them out.
Oh, yeah, man. Look at this. 76,000 original miles. Look at this thing.
Tell me you don't want one of these.
Tell me you don't want one.
And I won't believe you.
Joe really likes these. I'm surprised he didn't want to do it.
It's got no vacuum like the power brakes are really hard.
So, I'm kind of trying to be cautious and getting ready to put it in park.
Sounds like the good timing's probably jumped or something like that way it's running, but no check engine light.
Let's do preliminary inspection. See if we can see something.
See it's got oil in it things like that.
See if there's holes and stuff.
It's actually a pretty nice car.
I got to say 70 something thousand miles.
Lock and unlock. Lose the window switches. Oh.
Old school.
Let's see what we can see. We'll get the scanner on it if we don't see something real bad.
Like that that Mustang I found pieces of a connecting rod.
That car's gone.
There's no point to put the scanner on it.
Well, that is the 3 liter.
Behold.
And this old girl has been taken care of pretty much. Got new belts on it and stuff.
Now, I don't know if the timing belt's been done.
But, that's a possibility.
This thing stuff is just weird and the lack of engine vacuum.
I don't see holes or anything really crazy. I don't see like a radiator blown out from the side.
Coolant level still good.
See if it's got oil.
Yep.
Let's see if it's got oil after you wipe it off.
Yep.
Full and clean.
Now, we're in drivability mode.
Hook the scanner up.
See what it thinks. Got to be something going on even though there's no check engine light.
I don't see a blinky light.
Hmm.
Oh, let's see if we try to communicate with it.
What happens?
It's an '03.
Lenny knew enough that it should do something.
This is cuz I had the scan tool outside on that diesel truck. I lost my Bluetooth.
You guys saw when I first got the tool I was struggling with that.
At least now we know what it is. Not really that big of a deal.
I either need to use my phone as a hotspot, get better Wi-Fi, or just deal with it.
That's what I've been doing, just dealing with it.
No big deal, really.
They just raised my phone rate, too. I don't know if they did that to you guys.
They said, "Yeah, we have to raise your phone bill 20% on on all four lines."
It is what it is, like everything else.
Nothing you can do about it.
You make adjustments. Oh, four codes, see?
Let's let this finish. Stop flapping our trap, getting in trouble.
See if we can sort something out for this wonderful Saturn show car.
Well, you might notice we got EVAP code, we got EGR code, we got a throttle actuator code, fuel pump relay code.
Someone's probably been playing with it.
I noticed the cap is missing for the uh fuel line there.
No big deal, but this is a cool part I found in the show.
When the catalytic converter becomes restricted, and the exhaust can't get out, then it actually melts your EGR valve.
That's aluminum that you see there.
Aluminum has melted, and that's probably how this thing's running.
It melted the EGR open so it could get exhaust out somehow.
So, it's probably been running with low power for quite a while.
And uh this EGR valve actually don't look too old. It's hard to tell cuz the car's in such good shape. So, it might just be clean, but I'm going to tell I'm going to say right now the exhaust has got to be restricted for that to happen.
Pretty cut and dry.
Now, are catalytic converters available for this, and how rusty is that's the question.
It should be a pretty easy repair if we can get parts for it.
So, I'm going to lift it up. We're going to have a look underneath. See what it looks like under there.
We got new axles. Someone's subframe bolts have been messed with. Someone's been doing some work on this thing.
Um it's got some oil leaks.
Sway bar link not doing too good. That's That's minor compared to some of the other thing. A little bit of a leak.
Uh you can see how this pipe looks like it's old.
That means it got hot.
Same thing with this one.
Some of this stuff looks like it might have been replaced not too, too long ago.
We may have to uh check into an existing fueling problem causing it to make the cats real hot.
Rubber bushings are all kind of blown out. You've got The car's got some age, even though they don't really have to be changed yet, but when the rubber goes out, that means the both metal parts of the bushing are going to be wearing out really quick after that.
But, you can keep an eye on it and you see how it goes. As long as you have your car serviced regularly.
Um if you don't really service your car regularly, then you probably should change them so you don't forget about it and have a a wheel fall off like on this Lincoln where the ball joint came apart.
That mount looks like it's been changed at some point. Someone had the transmission out of it or something.
Maybe it's the rear main seal. What do you say?
So, we know what it needs. Got the tires.
Brakes seem decent.
See if we can get to do anything. This car's been here This car's been here for 4 days. Pretty funny.
And it took 10 minutes to figure it out.
So, we got it. That's what matters. And we'll see if we get to fix it.
All right, guys. We are getting ready to button this place up. Look, I cleaned some of the uh I cleaned some of it up. I couldn't handle it while I was working on the dually. So, I uh couldn't stop myself. Uh I guess I could have worked on this.
We'll mess with it in the morning.
