Charlize Theron's Apex filmed in Australian bush | Sunrise

[00:00:00]In entertainment this morning, Charlize Theron is literally running for her life in a ruthless game of cat and mouse in her new movie Apex. The Netflix thriller was filmed right here in Australia in our Blue Mountains and also stars Taron Egerton and I caught up with the stars to see how they survived working in our rugged Aussie bush.

[00:00:38]What was it like being in in the Aussie bush in all the elements filming this project? It was great. I mean, counter to the movie feeling anxious and scary, we actually had a really incredible time and thoroughly loved Australia.

[00:00:52]>> I just think I am the luckiest man in the world and I love it and so although it was tough at times, you got to just suck it up, you know?

[00:01:02]>> [music] >> You going to need it alone?

[00:01:04]I wouldn't recommend it.

[00:01:06]Apex is as unforgiving as the Aussie landscape it's set in. Filmed in the Blue Mountains and in Sydney's West, it also stars Eric Bana. We're playing a game.

[00:01:17]Is that what you think we're doing?

[00:01:19]The stars didn't go unscathed on the shoot, but it wasn't the cliff or rappels that caught Charlize's house.

[00:01:26]You've had to have a couple of surgeries post Apex on your elbow because you you were injured during the shoot.

[00:01:33]>> [music] >> Yes, that actually didn't happen in the bush. So, the bush is not to blame for that injury. Actually happened on a stage, yeah. We shot on a stage and I [music] injured it there. It's not the first time Charlize has been badly injured on set. She had three surgeries after The Old Guard, crushed two teeth in Atomic Blonde, and suffered a serious neck injury in Aeon Flux. I'll be honest with you, I am very accident-prone. So, this I've just known about myself from the time that I was a small child. And I will say some of my I've had some of my worst injuries probably on films that and it was not action-related. So, this is just me and my life. Despite the long injury list, the action star and mother says she plays it safe [music] and is always prepared on set. I don't think of myself as a risk-taker. Even before my kids, I want to go home, you know? I want to go home and have a beer. Like, [music] I don't want to die. I don't want to like lose a leg. After hitting the high notes of Elton John, Taron Egerton exercises a different vocal range in Apex, an Aussie accent.

[00:02:45]Affecting our twang while running uphill in rugged terrain.

[00:02:56]Frankly, I'm just really pleased that you can say something like that, that I have the kind of career where I can do things that are that diverse. The pair both at their peak in Apex, it drops on Netflix tomorrow.

[00:03:16]Ooh, it is an intense ride, that movie.

[00:03:18]Great to see productions like this though showcasing our Aussie bush at its best. The bush comes off probably the best in this movie. Uh it also injected around 50 million into our local economy and created around 500 jobs. And Netflix has another major movie get uh set to start filming next month with Mark Wahlberg. So, it's good to see those big productions here.
