[00:00:38]All right. Well, good what is it?

[00:00:40]Thursday. Good Thursday to you. Uh we've got weather changing on us a little bit today. Today's going to be the beginning of this process of getting into kind of a stormy setup. So, you may have noticed that we had some clouds that filled in over the past half hour or so. Um I'll walk you through today. Then we've got Friday with we've got record heat on the way. We've got first warns Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday. Storms are possible during those times. Some of these storms could be severe. So, I'll show you the latest severe risk. And the big thing is you've got plans for your weekend. And what's all this mean for your plans? Uh, I'll tell you this right now. It's not going to be a wash out.

[00:01:16]All right. So, we'll time that out for you as we get started here. So, let's just kick it off.

[00:01:22]Current conditions. This is what's going on right now. And we are at 70 already.

[00:01:28]Wow, it warmed up really fast. We were at 53 this morning is where we were and already jumping up to 70°. Mostly cloudy skies. If I show you this, you'll see the clouds filling in and even a few showers out there south. So, it's going to be there's pretty dry yet. It's going to be hard to get much, but you can see how the clouds have thickened up on us.

[00:01:48]We zoom in. There might be a sprinkle in there. Probably not. Uh that green that you see is what we call radar clutter.

[00:01:56]But down here and over to our west by Eureka, little something. This is the first little system that's coming on through. And what this will do is by tonight kick a surge of humid air up our way. It's not here yet. Still low humidity, but humidity is going to be picking up on us a little bit later on uh by tonight. So at a glance, this is how the day looks. 79 degrees going to be your high temperature. Winds are gusty out of the southeast. It's going to be up to 35 miles per hour at times.

[00:02:23]And show it to you here. This is how the winds will look throughout the day.

[00:02:28]South or southeast. There you can see 30 35 maybe a 40 mile per hour gust here or there. Let's go to the first warn future radar. This should be updated and new for us. Now notice how it's got that little bit of rain south and west by Garnett. Trying to punch it to Piola, but again chances are pretty low in KC.

[00:02:49]Now, what we're going to have to watch for tonight after that warm, humid air comes in that I was telling you about is the possibility that some storms try to fire up to our south and west. So, what this would look like is after, you know, 8 9:00 tonight. We see in that yellow zone in central Kansas, some storms could get going. And if they do, and it's an if, we don't know this, uh there's some things that could prevent them from firing up at all, but if they can fire, then they would be pushed eastward, and that could bring some storms. This is overnight, really, more so than evening for us, could bring some storms our way. So, a level two out of five just noses in by Lawrence, primarily for hail, and then a level one out of five for Casey and everybody that's in green. So the environment is just starting to transition over into this unstable, you know, something that's got enough fuel for strong thunderstorms. We don't really have a lot of that yet. So they're going to fire in the place that would be have enough ingredients to bring some severe storms and then they would kind of move out of that and on a weakening trend.

[00:03:50]Not a big severe risk tonight. It's not even a high chance tonight, but it's possible that we have a storm or two that kind of drifts over our way. So just know that. That's what we have for tonight. Now, let's go into Friday because Friday is a different day. Here comes the humidity and here comes the heat. We dial it up. 92 degrees. It is humid with it, too. So, it's not humid enough that it's going to have a huge impact on the heat index, but you'll feel it. You're going to you're going to notice the mugier air. And the record is 91 from back. It's a 85y old record.

[00:04:21]Real old record. Then now we're now that that thunderstorm fuel, that warm humid air is firmly in place. Now, we don't expect a lot of thunderstorms, but they could form as early as about 8:00 or so on our Friday evening, and that could impact plans. It's not expected. It's more likely that that doesn't happen, but we're first warning this because if they do form, which is a possibility, then they would likely be severe. So, tomorrow is a higher severe risk. It's at a level two out of five. And notice that does include the Kansas City metro.

[00:04:55]Primarily the risk here again would be hail and damaging winds, 60 70 mph wind gusts and hail to the size of quarters or maybe golf balls, something like that.

[00:05:08]The So whenever you get storms to fire up in that kind of environment, they're going to edge toward the stronger side.

[00:05:14]Um, so what that means is I wouldn't cancel my plans on Friday, but I would be aware that it's it's it's something that I may have to have a backup plan.

[00:05:24]It's possible. Just kind of have it in the back of your mind. Now, we go into the weekend focused look at this.

[00:05:31]Chances are a little bit higher. So, Saturday, we're up to a 50% chance, but again, we're talking late day and evening night. So, you know, we've got a lot going on with graduation, all kinds of stuff this weekend. And it's a spring weekend in Kansas City with warm, humid weather. We're all going to be outside.

[00:05:47]So that's why we're highlighting that this it's going to be a lot more dry time than wet on Saturday. Same thing on Sunday. So the story here is we will have focused hours late in the day and into the night where the storms would be a potential threat.

[00:06:02]And if they're around, they're probably going to be severe. There's a severe risk for each of those days.

[00:06:08]All right. Now, this may be a cleaner way for you to kind of visualize if you're making plans um of what what it could look like. So, if I'm making plans, what what do I need to know?

[00:06:20]Well, Friday, what's the storm chance?

[00:06:22]What are the odds that we have storms on Friday? Low. It's a low chance. But if they go, medium severe risk, they're probably going to be at least low and severe. Timing would be after 7 PM. Big chunk of Friday is going to be dry, sunny, hot, and humid. You're going to wish you had some cloud cover come through. What about Saturday? Saturday's chance is medium. It's not a guarantee that we get storms Saturday. It's better shot Saturday night. Um but if they go again, probably severe at least a lowend severe risk. Um or low severe thresholds I should say. Uh timing would be after 6 p.m. And then Sunday, storm chance again is medium, but the severe risk is dropping down for us on Sunday. In Kansas City, there's kind of a couple rounds here. One is early morning. I'm talking like six, seven, eight, something like that where we could have a kind of a cluster left over from Saturday night. We see some indication of that. And then a big chunk of Sunday is dry. Then again after 6 p.m. So, you know, looking at uh graduation um ceremonies and parties and things like that, it's possible. It's something to be thinking about, but are they at a huge risk right now? No.

[00:07:33]This We'll tell you about the humidity because it's all tied together. Today's our last nonh humid day where it's comfortable outside. By Friday, Saturday, Sunday, especially Saturday and Sunday, we're into the muggy zone.

[00:07:47]Now, it's not like August, but we haven't had a lot of humidity yet. So, we're in the beginning of the, you know, summery humidity season, and that is going to help fuel the storms.

[00:08:00]And I want to show you this. All right.

[00:08:02]So this is the storm zone where you see the the most rain fire up. Now that's the core of it. That's where they're going to have the highest number of storms in this green zone through the weekend. All right, so I highlighted it in the green zone and KC is on the fringe of this. What that means is we aren't socked right in the middle of the spot that's going to get hit repeatedly and have a lot of wet hours over the weekend. We're on the edge of that. And what that means is that we will have these focused times like I outlined for you earlier. Let's look at the severe risks here. Uh, in fact, I'll zoom in on Saturday on uh Friday, rather.

[00:08:38]Do this first.

[00:08:41]So, we we looked at this one earlier.

[00:08:43]This is Friday's severe risk. Now, I'm going to pull the view out.

[00:08:50]All right. So, there you go. Friday, level two in the yellow that you see.

[00:08:55]Saturday. There it is again. So essentially each day the ingredients are in place for storms to go strong to severe. And then here's Sunday. Now notice on Sunday the yellow is moving north. And there's actually a level three in Nebraska. So Sunday could go off up in portions of uh Iowa and Nebraska and South Dakota, but that's probably going to be the focal point of it there. Then by Monday, it starts to slide back down toward us. So Monday's a first warn too. So, we we still have a chance for storms on Sunday and they could still be strong, but we're out of that level two zone in Kansas City.

[00:09:30]You're still in it in northwest Missouri and some of those areas. Uh, by the time it's all said and done, let's look at rain totals here.

[00:09:40]Uh, I'm looking at the Facebook comments if anybody's got any questions that they'd like to ask. So, over the next week, the whole ball of wax, you put it together, uh, we're probably going to get an inch and a half to two inches fairly widespread. Anytime you're talking thunderstorms, it all just depends on if you get underneath the cell that, you know, are you on the edges of them. Uh if you're underneath the middle of them, you can get up a lot of rain. But widespread, we're in the purple, which is an inch and a half. Two inches is where you start getting into the reddish purple. There's little pockets of that out there. Now, don't get me wrong, if you get a couple strong thunderstorms to pass over your area, you can get two inches in no time. So, there will be spots that beat that. Uh, but if we just look out over the next three days, you see that it's much lighter. So, this will take us through what, Friday and Saturday and Sunday, and we're down an inch or less. Most of this, I think, is actually going to come on Monday and Tuesday. That's probably going to be the main event as far as like number of storms. See if I can show you that here.

[00:10:41]So, here's the 7-day.

[00:10:44]First off, I'll show you Friday and what it looks like. Big chunk of the day is dry and sunny and hot. There's four o'clock. And then watch that sliding in out of the northwest. This is an update.

[00:10:53]This just changed. It's not It's lower now. It did have that line sweeping in and approaching KC by about 11:00 or so.

[00:11:01]So, that's new. There's Saturday 88, Sunday 88, Monday 88. So, it stays on the hot side, you know, humid, very summerlike through each of those days.

[00:11:11]and see if I put it in Saturday. No, that's not what I wanted.

[00:11:24]See if I put in Sunday. No, sorry about that. I thought I'd put in So, these are scenes that we build and I thought that within that I had put the radar. I know I put it on Monday, though. So, let's show you Monday. All right. So, look at this. This is a little different picture. That's where you got widespread rain coming in on Monday. That's going to be a line of storms that comes through and they would likely be severe.

[00:11:46]And then Tuesday, yet again, Tuesday's the last harrah. Tuesday is where we're going to have the front and the front will bring yet another line of storms before it shuts down on Wednesday. So, it probably won't be until Wednesday that we are out of this pattern that we transition away from the stormy setup.

[00:12:03]All right. So just the bottom line with all this is mainly we're looking at late afternoons and evenings for the chance.

[00:12:10]Each day has a severe risk from Friday through Tuesday and it's going to be hot and humid in the meantime.

[00:12:16]Record-breaking heat. There you go. Much the rest of it's going to be all right.

[00:12:20]Uh your mornings, your early afternoons, your mid-afternoons generally for now look pretty good. Stay tuned for updates. Anytime you're talking about, you know, multiple storm systems coming through, they all, you know, influence each other. Just imagine you're on the interstate and you've got all these cars that are like merging with one another.

[00:12:36]That's kind of how storms behave. One can kind of adjust the other and how we all weave and interact. Uh so there will be updates to this, but for now that's the way it looks and I hope that that helps you with your plans. That's really the big the big thing here. I've got uh Jorge has a question. Is Monday looking like a higher chance with the cold front approaching KC? Uh the wind shear the cape looking like for Monday. So what he's asking is the severe ingredients.

[00:12:57]Cape is convective available potential energy. That's our measure of how much juice, how much thunderstorm fuel is there, and Monday's got a lot. That's why Monday is going to be probably the main event, Monday or Monday and Tuesday. Now, the front may not come until Tuesday. The latest computer forecasts have this system slowing down a bit and the front doesn't come through until Tuesday. So, whenever the front comes in, imagine that's like a plow moving through the atmosphere of colder, dense air, and it forces the humid, warm air above it. and then boom, you get storms to fire up in these big lines that come through. At times that's look like Monday, but the more recent stuff looks like Tuesday. The thing is for Monday, we've got all the juice to work with. There may not be um you know, your front's going to bring the most number of storms, but I think Monday's got the best ingredients for severe weather. So, both of them would be stormy. Monday probably the higher severe risk. That's what we've got for you. Uh we'll be keeping you posted, of course, through Friday through the rest of the day.

[00:17:13]>> All righty, but we do want to jump into your news headlines right now. Well, starting off with this story um here on your screen. I'm sure you've seen it all over social media. An iconic Kansas City diner is pulling back its hours, and the reason why speaks to a growing safety concern. Town topic is ending its roundthe-clock service after a series of break-ins, ATV chaos, and incidents, and a deadly shooting in its parking lot.

[00:17:37]KCTV 5's Gabby Luma is in the crossroads with the demands from the owners of Town Topic.

[00:17:47]for service at least for now. Why? They say that the risk much outweighs that overnight profit. Now the this this isn't actually the first time this has been an issue, especially here in the crossroads. Now those businesses, they are have seen problems go back more than a year. In the spring of 2025, neighbors called out ATVs tearing through First Friday crowds. And by fall, the Crossroads community was floating drone patrols and offduty officers to take back the district. But this parking lot, owned by an outofstate company, never got those upgrades. Rick Usher with Crossroads Community Improvement District says the owner has no security in place and has resisted every offer to help or to sell. On April 26th, police say a fight here ended with one man dead and several people in custody.

[00:18:39]>> There does have to be more cooperation from the property owner. And if that property owner is willing to sell, then there are, we think, people that might be interested in buying that that would operate it more responsibly. Crossroads leaders say this just goes to show of how much they need to put in place to have that safety and they are worried that there could be other late night spots just as town topic disappearing and they are just hoping that there can be some changes made especially before the World Cup comes to town just in a couple of weeks. For now, reporting from the crossroads, Gabby Luma, KCTV5 News.

[00:19:17]Kansas City police are searching for a hit-and- run driver this morning after a postal worker was killed. Investigators say a Chevy blew through a stop sign at 30th in Benton last night, striking a USPS delivery van and then flipping it onto its side. The postal worker was partially ejected and died at the scene.

[00:19:34]The suspect though has not been identified, so we'll of course bring you the latest on this investigation as it develops.

[00:19:40]>> All righty. And moving along to another story that is making headlines today as well as across the nation. So we do know that health officials say that three people came into contact with a passenger from that cruise ship on an international flight. No one has tested positive. We are talking about the haunt virus uh just yet, but Kansas health officials say that if that changes, the public will be notified. Doctors are keeping a close eye on them for the next six weeks. And Missouri says it has no cases or exposures at this time.

[00:20:10]>> And we now know that that cruise ship is actually linked to at least 11 confirmed or suspected hunter virus cases. Three deaths worldwide as well. The World Health Organization is tracking these passengers in at least 12 nations. And the specific strain, it is called the Andes virus. It's only known hunter virus that spreads person to person, but only through that prolonged close contact. And Bishop Ward High School seniors won't face criminal charges, but their graduation is still on hold. KCK police closed their vandalism investigation after the school chose to handle it internally. A parent says the senior prank turned into serious destruction, trashed classrooms, overturned tables, and ripped up textbooks as well. No new graduation date has been announced. If you've ever watched a youth sports game, you know things can get a little dicey sometimes and out of hand on the sidelines. Lisa Summit Parks and Wreck is now doing something about this, rolling out a new policy that can suspend or even permanently ban parents and coaches who abuse or name call these referees.

[00:21:20]If you're a parent and your child plays youth sports, you've probably been at one of their games or matches and have seen a fan or a parent on the sideline who just goes a little too far by yelling at or maybe even getting physical with referees. Well, it's happening all across the metro and it's actually leading to some issues for youth leagues because about 60% of refs are quitting every single year and the number one reason is abuse from the sidelines. So now Lee Summit Parks and Recre is taking a stand by issuing a new sideline policy. So that means you could face suspension or even a lifetime ban from your child's games if you do go too far again. That was our Maya Engel reporting. All right, World Cup construction is already transforming the grounds at the National World War I Museum and Memorial. That main entrance is closed. Golf carts are now shuttling visitors from Union Station to a new westside entry. Which brings us to the upside of all of this. Starting on June 11th, the museum is offering an all access ticket, guaranteeing you get into both the museum and the FIFA Fan Festival, even if those crowds hit that 25,000 person cap. Tickets start at $30 for adults.

[00:22:44]And tonight is the night if this video will pull up for me. We have been waiting for this. At least I have. The full NFL or 2026 NFL schedule drops at 700 p.m. And we already know some of the details about who is coming to Arrowhead Stadium this season. Katie Maher has what we know so far.

[00:23:03]NFL schedule release day. Tonight, we'll get the full picture of what this 2026 NFL season will look like. Most importantly for us here in Kansas City, that means we'll get to know when fans will get to fill Arrowhead Stadium and when to plan their watch parties when the Chiefs are on the road. We already know the Chiefs will be opening the season at home hosting the only AFC West team not named the Kansas City Chiefs who's managed to win the division in the last decade. That would be, of course, the Denver Broncos. KC will take on the reigning AFC West champs in prime time on Monday Night Football. That's set for September 14th. It's all the rest of these games that are the question marks waiting to be answered. Apart from their three divisional home games, a matchup with the reigning AFC champion Patriots headlines the rest of the home slate.

[00:23:49]Arrowhead will also see the Jets, Cardinals, and Colts, as well as a familiar Super Bowl opponent, the 49ers.

[00:23:57]On the road, the Chiefs will face rivals like the Bills and the Bengals, as well as the reigning Super Bowl champion Seahawks, plus the Dolphins, Rams, and Falcons. One thing we do know for sure is all of the Chiefs games will be in the US. The league revealed their international slate yesterday, which spans seven countries in four continents and does not feature the Chiefs. Games will be played in Brazil, France, Germany, Mexico, Spain, and the UK. KC has played two international games in the last three seasons. The schedule drop is at 700 p.m. Central tonight, but don't be surprised if we get a few more leaks before that. In the studio, Katie Maher, KCTV 5 Sports.

[00:25:00]And we do want to move on to some other news. And this is regarding what you will be paying at the pump. President Donald Trump wants to give drivers a break at the pump, but it's not that simple. Trump floated a federal gas tax holiday this week, which would temporarily eliminate the 18 cent federal tax on every gallon of gas.

[00:25:19]Congress would have to approve it. And members of both parties, they have questions right now. Even if it passes, analysts say the average driver would only save about $35 total. And lower prices could actually drive demand up and push prices right back. Renters in Kansas City say their landlord made a promise and did not keep it. Three years ago, the city reached a landmark agreement to help tenants living in these poor conditions, spending $86,000 to subsidize rent. Yesterday, those tenants, many of them who are refugees, joined with others to demand a meeting with this landlord, saying conditions have only gotten worse. KCTV 5's Betsy Webster has their story.

[00:26:17]The city agreed to pay $400 of the $850 rent if the landlord moved them over here and maintained this place. The agreement expired and Councilman Jonathan Duncan said the landlord chose not to renew it.

[00:26:32]>> The landlord did not follow through on on his promises to renovate and improve the living conditions for the tenants.

[00:26:37]>> I'm not happy move here because tiny room. First time I live over there big.

[00:26:42]>> Three years ago, we met his parents. His dad is blind. His mom is on oxygen. They sleep in the living room. They're refugees from Burma. He says they haven't had hot water for 2 weeks. And the vent over the stove is broken. We walked one flight up from their apartments and here's what we found.

[00:27:18]So, a big new addition at the Kansas City Zoo and Aquarium is about to open its gates this month. Draft Crossing is set to debut next Friday, May 22nd. The new area will include an overlook plaza with feeding stations and it's designed so that you can get up close and personal with those giraffes. And this project has been in the works since November of 2024. So, Carolina, I have to know what you think about this.

[00:27:43]>> Oh, I think the kids are going to love it.

[00:27:45]>> I know >> it's going to be fantastic. I will say I think giraffes have long tongues.

[00:27:50]>> They do. So, I'm very intrigued as to like if I'm trying to give them food if it'll be like, you know.

[00:32:56]We're so close to Friday. We're almost there. And so we do have to touch on what is trending. And this actually came down this morning. And I know a lot of people are excited about it.

[00:33:06]>> Yeah. So the 2026 World Cup final won't just be about the beautiful game. It's actually getting a Super Bowl style show, too. Sophia said that Shakira, Madonna, and the K-pop giants BTS will headline the tournament's first ever halftime performance. The final match kicks off July 19th at Metife Stadium in New Jersey and the World Cup opens on June 11th in Mexico City. Okay, how do we feel about these um artists?

[00:33:37]>> I am honestly pretty excited. Um, I do like, haven't Shakira and Madonna also performed at halftime show before? I know Shakira has for sure, but I don't know about Madonna. I think BTS doing it is going to be pretty cool. Um, I >> they're huge right now.

[00:33:55]>> Yeah, I think they're like having like a comeback and I think it'll be really cool to see them. And >> so, Madonna did perform. She did uh 2012.

[00:34:04]>> Uh, yes. And so I know Shakira did um I don't know what year but she did it with Jennifer Lopez. We were just talking about that in Miami. Um so yeah, I know that these are three huge artists. Uh so it is going to be very interesting to see all of them come together and you know I'm not mad at it honestly.

[00:34:22]>> Me neither. You know what? I have been absolutely loving the Super Bowl halftime shows for the past two years.

Beyonce and Taylor Swift have a new honor alongside their names. Their work is on the 2026 lineup of the Library of Congress's National Recording Registry. It includes Swift's 1989 album and Beyonce song Single Ladies Put a Ring on It. I love that song. Some other artists on the list with their individual works recognized include the Go-Os uh Weezer as well as Vince Gil. Another addition is the original cast of the Broadway show Chicago, Roseanne Cash's induction for her album The Will is History Making. But these two women, Taylor Swift and Beyonce, I mean, we can expect nothing less.

And you know, Beyonce's Single Ladies, that is just an absolute classic to me. I feel like it's one of the first songs like I really grew up listening to cuz I was like single.

[00:37:22]Um this is something I didn't know happened that long ago. I remember when we were in the process of it, but I didn't know it was this long.

[00:37:29]>> Yeah. Okay. So remember that writers and actors strike from three years ago.

[00:37:33]Honestly, it does not feel like it's been 3 years, but that's not going to happen again for at least another four years after both unions recently agreed to new deals. But one union hasn't yet, the Director's Guild. The DGA's current contract with the movie studios runs until the end of the month, and the guild has one sticking point that might get in the way of a new contract, healthcare. So, right now, directors enjoy a plan with no premiums and a $1,000 out-ofpocket maximum, but it lost close to $40 million in 2024. So, premiums are likely going to come into play. Studios say they're already chipping in more money, and union leaders admit their members will also have to contribute more.

[00:38:22]>> I hope that it doesn't go back to the way it was three years ago, you said.

[00:38:28]>> Because that was that was a lot. And speaking to the people who are impacted, I mean, uh, who work for these shows that write the scripts and people who are actors and actresses, it was just very heartbreaking to see like their livelihoods completely just put on pause and they didn't know the end date >> and healthcare is a big deal.

[00:38:47]>> So, we'll just have to wait and see, but hopefully that is not the case. But, I'll tell you what is the case.

[00:38:53]Something that I have been looking forward to and Drake's album is dropping tonight. And I actually actually just saw he posted um that the time for his stream where he'll be playing it that is 9:45 Eastern time which is 8:45 Central time. Jasine just touched on the fact that she is team Kendrick. I am all the way Drake, but Drake's new leak track is serving full court shade today. The New York Post says, "A song called 1:00 a.m.

[00:39:21]in Albany hit the internet and Drake disses Kendrick Lamar and even takes a shot at the one and the only LeBron James." It is a surprise. LeBron James.

[00:39:32]Yeah, it is a surprise since they have been tight. But LeBron was seen supporting Kendrick, even vibing to the song Not Like Us. So now playoffs pop culture edition because apparently the beef has box scores. So, I am excited about this. I did hear a little snippet with Claire Decar um over at our desk earlier and it sounds like it's going to be good. The album is going to be titled Ice Man and I'm just waiting for the tour to be announced shortly after. And when it is, I better not see you there, Jasmine.
