One of the biggest reasons is guilt, and psychology actually explains why. Your brain is wired to treat social rejection like physical pain. So, when you say no, your nervous system fires like you're in danger, even though you're not. Your brain just doesn't know any different.
So, here are three ways to start setting boundaries. One, before you say yes, ask yourself, is anyone actually going to get hurt here? Is anyone in danger? If [snorts] the answer is no, you should say no. Two, start scaling back your yeses. If you're saying yes 10 out of 10 times, aim for eight, then six, then five. You're not going cold turkey, you're just slowly taking steps back. Three, no is a complete sentence.
You don't need to overexplain yourself, because the moment you start justifying, you begin to devalue your standards. The guilt will always come, but the more you feel it, and the more you push through it anyway, the more you become desensitized to it. And that's when you become forming your boundaries.
