A King, a Crossbow, and an Historic Château Down the Road From Us | Manor & MakerAdded:
Tonight on Manor Maker, we get new room signs, discover amazing history just down the road, go broke haunting, and unfortunately say goodbye to the pickets.
For those guys who've been watching us for a while, you know that we named each of the rooms uh when we first started and they were more based on sort of the location in the chateau or you know a couple of other names that had significance. We have decided to change the naming convention up a little bit.
So this room that was Shatalan remains Shhatalan. That's the one room that we have managed to keep. So I'm going to get that new tag up. Each one of these now has not only the name but a little illustration to just reinforce um just to make it a little extra cute and obviously based off of the logo of the chatau itself. So, let's get them up and show you the new naming convention.
There we go. Chatam is back to being Chatalam.
This room that was the petite shop is now the illuminator room.
The term illuminator comes from those who illuminate manuscripts. They would enhance by adding color and beautiful typography to the written word.
Three of the names that we have chosen for the rooms are represented by the tears that we have on our Patreon page.
That way, you know, we have that connection. And we chose the names for both the Patreon and for this as a way of sort of welcoming people to the manor itself or the chateau itself. So for example, this one this room is going to be now trouidor. So a trouidor would have been minstrels, musicians, uh people that would have entertained at court.
This is the biggest room that we have and the on suite. So I think it's only fitting that it get the top tier name which is portraitist. And again, this would be somebody that would be welcomed at court to create the official portraits for the family.
And finally, the name of this room was Lur because of its location right beside the tower, but it is now going to become the coutureier room. again, uh, someone who would be welcomed at court to create all the clothing for the family.
And there we have it. This is also appropriate because in the winter time, Sarah quite often uses this room as her sewing room.
>> We don't tend to showcase this side of the chateau very often, and there's a good reason for that. We kind of consider it the working part of the chateau. It's where the barbecue is.
It's where the uh door into the kitchen is through the mudroom and of course the garage where we keep all of the tools for gardening and that sort of thing.
It's not somewhere the guests tend to come. Um it's also where obviously we park the car. And when we get home late at night, it gets to be really dark in this corner of the chatau. So, as a solution to that, Real Link has sent us a new product. We're excited about this because it is not only a security camera, but it also has a flood light, and that is going to make a world of difference in this part of the chateau.
So, thank you so much to Real Link for sponsoring this video. Real Link Solar Flood Light is an all-in-one solarp powered flood light security camera designed to deliver real illumination and reliable surveillance made practical through wireless solar power. Powered by Rail Link Solar Ease technology, delivering higher charging efficiency and more stable power supply, even in low light or partial shaded conditions.
1 hour of daytime sunlight can support the camera's daily operation at night, and even in cloudy weather, a full charge can last up to 3 months. No wires needed, hassle-free installation and maintenance.
The Real Link app provides an easy way to control your devices from your phone anywhere. The real link AI identifies people, vehicles, and animals and activates custom lighting responses that you can set.
One of the key considerations to putting anything on this side of the chateau is the fact that some of the guest rooms do have windows here. So, we have to make sure that whatever goes here is not disturbing them at night. Fortunately, the camera has amazing features that allow us to customize how much light and what it can see. Uh that way it's not going on and off all the time.
The flood light offers up to 1,000 lumens of illumination. The flood light mode adjustable brightness and color temperature from 3,000 Kelvin warm to 6,000 Kelvin cool tailored for your needs. The light also provides an alert mode intelligent flashing or steady lights triggered by AI detection for protection and deterrence.
The camera provides 2K 4 megapixels HD uh with 150 degrees wide field of view.
It also has color night vision.
There's an optional siren also that's up to 110 dB. This is perfect for scaring away any wouldbe intruders.
With the addition of the flood light and camera now installed in this part of the chateau, feels like all parts of the chatau are now covered. This gives us a tremendous amount of security. We love the real link cameras. They're incredibly wellb built and they provide us with amazing footage. The cameras are fantastic. The light sensors are fantastic. We've been able to pick up everything from people coming in to animals in the woods. And I just really feel comfortable now that all parts of the chatau are constantly being monitored. It gives us a chance regardless of where we are to be able to check in and see what's going on at the chatau at all times. Thank you so much Real Link for all the cameras you provided us and the security they bring.
So, we have decided to take a day out um with the wonderful Pickicket family and we have come only what 40 minutes north of the chatau to this amazing place that seems to be we seem to be the only ones here and the significance of it. This is actually where Richard Lionheart died.
So there, you know, famously he was shot by an arrow in his neck and um this was actually this the spot where that happened.
>> And it's, you know, when you find a place that hasn't been hit by over tourism yet and is still like very much Donju, as they say around here, like >> holy cow, this is an amazing spot.
>> Yeah, highly recommend it. I mean, you know, we'll we'll put the details in the uh the video for you here in the in the comment section, but I mean, by all means, this is this is a little hidden gem not far from us. And uh yeah, some serious history here. So, >> absolutely. So, thanks to our friends who recommended it to us as well.
>> Exactly. Something worthwhile.
>> Why is this not a bigger site? Like, why is this not more wellnown? Like literally parts of parts and I'm emphasizing parts of Richard Lion are are here. But more importantly, Eleanor was here.
>> Eleanor was here. Yeah. I mean, >> he literally died here. I thought he got the arrow here and was like taken off somewhere else, but no. No, he literally died in there. Bits of him here. Eleanor was here. Like, why is this not >> a bigger thing?
>> Apparently, this keep this the tower that you're seeing in front of us there, that keep was impenetrable.
>> Yes. when uh Lion Lion Hart >> it's 25 m now but was originally 30 >> 35 m yeah and there there was a wood structure that led up to a a high opening and that was destroyed and locked the people in there during the the siege >> and then the there was an archer who basically took his shot >> and uh got Richard in the neck and Richard forgave him on his deathbed because it took him several days to die of the infection and whatnot. 21 years old. Very young archer.
>> Add another 30 feet on that and hit a guy, you know, like >> Well, there I think >> there. What? Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah.
>> There's a sculpture there of >> We'll We'll give you the full detail.
Apparently, this is where uh Richard Lionheart's endrails were laid and monumented.
It's a very very long sculpture >> scale.
>> There you go.
>> Yes. Very long entrails apparently.
So rather sketchy looking staircase to lead up to the high entrance of this tower, >> but hey, why not?
>> So another dodgy staircase up to the next level, but look at the dome in here. It's all stone.
>> How cool is that?
Okay, we're coming up the rather sketchy second staircase and we're finally onto the stone staircase that are wrapping around the top here. So, let's see how far this goes.
Oh, we're getting there.
So, again, you see the amazing dome here. Look at that.
>> All right, be >> careful. The steps are kind of little up here.
>> So, this is a Templar cross that is actually carved into the step up here.
And we continue up.
There we go. We have made it to the top.
And look at that view.
Okay, we've just got all of my ladder staircase spheres in one here. Kendra's been very brave. Can I be very brave? I can do this. What's it look like up there, Kendra?
>> It's cool. That's the stone stairs look better.
>> Okay. And then there's some textiles that have been here for god knows how long.
This tower was built a thousand years ago. And I'm feeling every century of it. I don't think I don't think much has been done.
>> No.
>> The addition of these nice sturdy stairs.
>> Yeah. Even those I'm feeling like those are at least 900 years old. Don't you think?
>> Exactly. That's what they feel like when you're on.
>> How you doing, Sarah? I live here now.
>> Okay.
>> Okay.
Oh my gosh.
>> You're almost there.
>> I'm trying to video and climb at the same time, and that's a terrible idea.
>> I took video, so don't worry about that.
>> Okay, good.
Oh, >> I feel every one of the thousand years, honey.
>> Yeah, no kidding, huh?
>> Holy lick. I'm never I live here now.
>> Okay. Okay.
>> Well done.
>> I did it. Also, I'm never making it down. And I live here now. That's it.
>> Holy cow.
>> It's It's a hike, man. But look at the look at the extreme safety features that they've put up here to keep you from falling off.
>> I feel so safe.
>> Don't you?
>> Holy I can't even imagine adding another 30 ft on these.
>> Now, do that in a suit of armor. No kidding. Yeah.
>> Holy cow.
>> I think that's why you have the suit of armor cuz you just throw yourself down the stairs and hope for the best, you know? Like really?
Okay. What do you think? Can you make this shot?
>> Yeah, that's the thing. So the the the >> see the guy on the corner. Yeah. young 20 year 21-year-old marksman with a crossbow stood here. Sorry, not here. 10 meters above where we're standing cuz this tower was was 35 m high.
>> Yeah.
>> And managed to get Richard Lionheart through the neck.
>> That is impressive.
>> Like that's it's a life-sized statue down there basically.
>> That's impressive.
>> It looks so tiny on screen. It looks so tiny here. I mean it's it's a shot in a million that one I would have thought. I mean either that is that is an exquisite marksman or sheer luck that he managed to get that in.
>> I've heard a story that Richard actually taunted them.
>> Okay.
>> Basically said I don't even think you have an archer that could hit me. And of course you know what 21-year-old guy isn't going to take that on little incentive.
>> Yeah. Hold my beer. Exactly. That is a hold my beer second moment right there.
Cuz Richard was wandering around without any armor on basically like without any protection.
>> Of course he wasn't because you know he he thought he was indestructible.
>> Yeah. Little little bit of masculinity issues that guy. Yeah. Anyway, holy cow.
>> Have a Did you forget your Oh, you cross forgot your crossbow, honey. What were you thinking? You got it.
>> Yeah, that is I mean with with a scope and like a you know rifle. I don't I mean not that I'm a gun guy at all, but I'm thinking >> you don't shoot. So >> yeah, even with a rifle and a scope, I don't think I could make that shot. So >> crazy.
>> Okay, now we're attempting to go back down.
>> They were a lot shorter back then.
I'm now going to have to like basically limbo my way down the stairs.
>> Or or just duck in cover. Oh lord.
>> All right. Okay, my turn. Everyone very brave. All the bravery.
>> Lion hearts.
>> Yes. Exactly.
>> We are the lion heart.
>> Yeah.
>> Yeah. We are not shaking at all.
>> Yeah. Am I taking video just so I can defer my descent? Yes. Yes, I am.
Wow. Check this place out.
>> It's It's practically medieval.
Heat.
Heat.
After the castle, we decided to take the pickets to our favorite procant in the area. This one is called the Mulan Dami, and it is got a spectacular collection of amazing antiques. Thanks to Ed and Candace for telling us about it in the first place.
Steve, Steve, Steve, come and see these.
>> Uhoh.
>> What am I coming to see?
>> There's 12 little knife rests for €10, but they've got little flower pots on the end of them. You could have individual little flower arrangements at each place setting. Come on. €10, honey. Come on.
>> They're kind of cute.
>> I feel like you're not quite buying what I'm selling. Uh, it's funny cuz I see toothpick holders, but okay.
>> Oh, I do like the colored glass >> crystals though. That's stunning.
>> Yeah, of course you would. They're €500.
Look at you go.
>> Uh-huh. That's me.
>> Yeah, that's you.
like that's the ultimate fixer upper.
>> Yeah.
So, this is sadly our last dinner for this time with the pickets, but you guys have been amazing. We love you guys as always, and thank you for all your help.
And we got a new crew coming in. So, so Bonnie and Nikki are back with us and we're very excited to have you guys here too. So, welcome.
>> Thanks.
>> Bonapet everyone.
>> Yes.
>> We hate we hate this part, but they're going. They are leaving us.
>> Yes.
>> No more going.
>> No more going.
>> Always always the saddest part to see people go, but they'll be back, right?
>> Absolutely.
>> Can't get rid of us.
>> All right. Well, thank you for everything, guys. Yeah.
>> And safe travels. Before they left, Mike and Molly figured out the angles for this corner for the trim.
So, I'm going to just finish the job.
I've got my laser level here which is measured up to the other uh bits that are around and we will get this stuck on the wall and hopefully looking good.
And as assumed, they did a great job. It fits perfectly along that wall.
Thanks to my timali, perfect fit.
