CAC Math Legend Calls it a Career!Añadido:
You know, she went from someone who I thought was the scariest person in the world to someone I can I can trust in with everything that I have. And I just want to thank her for everything she's taught me and wish her a happy retirement. And I hope that she never has to do those complex math problems ever again.
>> Just make it easy on yourself. Wait, you asked me this one?
>> Yeah.
>> All right. Look, think of that as 13 x squ. Wait, what?
Think of it this way.
>> Ready? Take the 1/3 out.
>> That's x to the -2. I'm Kathy Holland and this is my 34th year to teach and my 19th at CAC. I did not always plan to be a teacher. I was actually a programmer for Axiom for a while and I wound up at CAC. I had taught in public schools for I don't know 13 14 years and I just needed a change and I can remember even being in the hall thinking I've got to do something different and then there was an opening at CAC so I applied for that. My favorite subject to teach is calculus because they're getting to do something they've never done. It is new material. They don't already know it.
And it's just fun to teach totally new things. If you teach pre-cal, they've already done most of it in algebra, too. And it's it's just exciting to get to do something different.
>> Miss Miss Holland is very special to me, uh, in that she reignited the the passion I have for math. Uh it it was originally like super repetitive, all the same thing, but now I I I found a new found love for it. And uh I just thank Miss Holland for being able to make math exciting. You know, that's kind of cliche, but she really did. She she made it she made it really interesting. She made me uh want to continue my education with math. I think the greatest joys of teaching are, you know, being with the kids and when you actually do have one that enjoys it or even if it's a kid that doesn't enjoy math, but then all of a sudden they understand something and they're like, "Oh, I can do this. I can do well." I think that's the the parts that I enjoy the most. I knew it was time to retire because I just kept thinking about things I was missing, mainly with my grandchildren.
I'm obsessed with having grandchildren and I would think of all the oh I could have gone to that or I could have done that yesterday or I could have gone to the park and I just know how quickly time goes and I'm thinking I want to spend time with them while they're still young. So that's my main my main plan for retirement.
>> I love Miss Holland because she genuinely cares about me and how I'm doing both inside and outside of the classroom. She is always there to go over a calculus problem for the thousandth time with me. And she also asks me about my life and how I'm doing and genuinely seems like she cares.
She's one of the best listeners ever.
And thank you, Miss Holland, for always being there for me and caring about me.
And thank you for teaching me calculus.
My favorite part about Miss Holland is she was really convincing to get me to stay in AP calculus. At first, I was like, this class is just so not for me, and I was ready to quit. but she saw potential in me and she said, "No, you're staying." And I'm so incredibly thankful because I've really learned a lot in her class. So, thank you, Miss Holland. Thank you for always being the person I can come to for any problems that I have. And thank you for teaching me calculus.
>> Thank you, Miss Holland.
>> We love you, Miss Holland.
>> We love you.
>> The thing I'll miss the most is easy.
I'll miss being with the kids. It's I know it sounds corny, but it kind of like becomes your family throughout the year. So, that's going to be rough and I know I'll miss it.
