Air exchangers (ERV/HRV) are generally more effective than air purifiers for reducing indoor air contaminants because they dilute indoor air by bringing in clean outdoor air and exhausting indoor air, whereas air purifiers only filter the same indoor air repeatedly; however, neither solution can make a moldy house safe, as complete mold remediation or moving to a clean environment is always necessary first.

Air Exchangers vs. Air Purifiers_ Which is Right for You_ πAdded:
But, if there is toxic mold and ongoing exposure, an air purifier will not make it safe for you to stay in that exposure. Only complete mold remediation or moving to a clean apartment will address the real problem.
If you want an air purifier, make sure that you choose one big enough for your room size. Prioritize true HEPA. Also, choose one with real activated carbon as this will still help to somehow reduce exposure. If you find this video interesting so far, please give the video a like and subscribe. Back to air purifiers. Most people think first about an air purifier or air filter. But, for indoor air contaminants, the stronger solution is usually dilution. Dilution means bringing in cleaner outdoor air while exhausting indoor air. By a long shot, this can work much better than only filtering the same indoor air again and again. This is where an air exchanger that exchanges inside air with clean outside air, but keeping the temperature in the room can be useful.
Those air exchangers come as an energy recovery ventilator or ERV or a heat recovery ventilator or HRV. Such an ERV or HRV can bring in outdoor air and exhaust indoor air. So, using such air exchangers can substantially reduce indoor toxins and VOC levels. An ERV also recovers heat and humidity. That can bring in outside air, but not as hot, cold, or humid as the outdoor air.
This allows you to exchange much more air than you could with just a fan blowing in outside air from an open window and also not get cold or hot outside temperatures into your room. You should find out which is better for your climate, ERV or HRV, but ERVs will work for most people. Some units can also filter the outdoor air to different degrees depending on the exact model.
Some have a HEPA filter option. So, instead of spending a lot of money on one of the more expensive air purifiers, it may sometimes make more sense to look at an air exchanger first. Or, you can use both, an air exchanger for dilution and an air purifier on top of that for additional filtration.
Like air purifiers, air exchangers will not make a moldy house safe. The first and always necessary step is to get out of the mold exposure either by remediating or moving to a clean place.
You cannot get around that with air filters or air exchangers.
