Dilution means bringing in cleaner outdoor air while exhausting indoor air. By a long shot, this can work much better than only filtering the same indoor air again and again. This is where an air exchanger that exchanges inside air with clean outside air, but keeping the temperature in the room can be useful.

So, using such air exchangers can substantially reduce indoor toxins and VOC levels. An ERV also recovers heat and humidity. That can bring in outside air, but not as hot, cold, or humid as the outdoor air.
