From the 1920s to 1996, over 10,000 women and girls were imprisoned in Magdalene Laundries across Ireland, run by religious orders including the Sisters of Mercy, where they worked without pay or rights for institutions like hotels, hospitals, and the Irish army; when 155 unmarked graves were discovered in 1993, the religious orders refused to contribute a single euro to the survivors' compensation fund, while the Irish state paid 32 million euros, highlighting the institutional injustice and silencing of women's voices in Irish history.

Ireland's Hidden Tragedy Unearthed: The Silenced Women #IrelandHistory #UncoveredSecretsHinzugefügt:
The church ran the laundries and Ireland looked away for 70 years. From the 1920s all the way to 1996, over 10,000 women and girls were locked inside Magdalene laundries across Ireland. Run by the Sisters of Mercy, the Sisters of Our Lady of Charity, the Good Shepherd Sisters. These weren't convents, they were workhouses. Women sent there for being unmarried mothers, for being too pretty, for being too poor, for being inconvenient. They worked without pay, without rights, without a voice. The laundries took in contracts from hotels, hospitals, schools and the Irish army.
The church made money. The state said nothing.
When police caught a woman who escaped, they brought her back. In 1993, workers at a Dublin convent found 155 unmarked graves. 155 women buried like they never existed. The religious orders refused to contribute a single euro to the survivors compensation fund, not one euro. The Irish state paid out 32 million. The church paid nothing. These women had names. They had counties. They had families who handed them over. That is the Ireland nobody put on a postcard.
If your family has a story connected to the Magdalene laundries, drop your county in the comments. Follow for more Irish history they never taught you in school.
