During World War II, Australian commando Leonard Siffleet was captured, tortured, and executed by beheading by Japanese officer Yasuno Chikao in Hollandia, New Guinea in October 1943; the photograph of this execution was discovered by US soldiers in 1944, providing Allied Forces with evidence of Japanese brutality, and the perpetrator Vice Admiral Michiaki Kamada was later convicted of war crimes and executed in 1947.
